I'll cover how serverless compute can be used as glue or backend, legacy API proxy, or do real-time processing. Further, I'll discuss how serverless can be employed for web applications, batch processing, stream processing and event-driven automation, at a high level.
Infrastructure as Code (IaC) is the management of infrastructure (networks, virtual machines, load balancers, and connection topology) in a descriptive model, using the same versioning as DevOps team uses for source code. Like the principle that the same source code generates the same binary, an IaC model generates the same environment every time it is applied. IaC is a key DevOps practice and is used in conjunction with Continues Delivery.

There are a number of open source projects built around closed platforms like AWS Lambda/Google Cloud Functions and open serverless projects like OpenWhisk and LeverOS. In this talk we'll cover what motivates contributors, what sends them running the other direction, and how you can help your project grow. Building a project on top of closed technology is an extra challenge without insight into where it's going. Learn how to manage continuous integration with your project against your (closed) dependencies and make sure bugs stay fixed.
What does Serverless mean for DevOps, in practical terms? While Serverless does reduce the need for server-centric DevOps, it poses new challenges in many areas including security, app deployment and cloud resource provisioning, partly due to an explosion of "nanoservices". Based on a current project using AWS, we cover relevant tools, techniques and tips to deliver a smooth serverless experience for development through to production.

Hadoop comprises the core of LinkedIn’s data analytics infrastructure and runs a vast array of our data products, including People You May Know, Endorsements, and Recommendations. To schedule and run the Hadoop workflows that drive our data products, we rely on Azkaban, an open-source workflow manager developed and used at LinkedIn since 2009. Azkaban is designed to be scalable, reliable, and extensible, and features a beautiful and intuitive UI. Over the years, we have seen tremendous growth, both in the scale of our data and our Hadoop user base, which includes over a thousand developers, data scientists, and analysts. We evolved Azkaban to not only meet the demands of this scale, but also support query platforms including Pig and Hive and continue to be an easy to use, self-service platform. In this talk, we discuss how Azkaban’s monitoring and visualization features allow our users to quickly and easily develop, profile, and tune their Hadoop workflows.

Stage Level Scheduling Improving Big Data and AI IntegrationDatabricks
In this talk, I will dive into the stage level scheduling feature added to Apache Spark 3.1. Stage level scheduling extends upon Project Hydrogen by improving big data ETL and AI integration and also enables multiple other use cases. It is beneficial any time the user wants to change container resources between stages in a single Apache Spark application, whether those resources are CPU, Memory or GPUs. One of the most popular use cases is enabling end-to-end scalable Deep Learning and AI to efficiently use GPU resources. In this type of use case, users read from a distributed file system, do data manipulation and filtering to get the data into a format that the Deep Learning algorithm needs for training or inference and then sends the data into a Deep Learning algorithm. Using stage level scheduling combined with accelerator aware scheduling enables users to seamlessly go from ETL to Deep Learning running on the GPU by adjusting the container requirements for different stages in Spark within the same application. This makes writing these applications easier and can help with hardware utilization and costs.
There are other ETL use cases where users want to change CPU and memory resources between stages, for instance there is data skew or perhaps the data size is much larger in certain stages of the application. In this talk, I will go over the feature details, cluster requirements, the API and use cases. I will demo how the stage level scheduling API can be used by Horovod to seamlessly go from data preparation to training using the Tensorflow Keras API using GPUs.
The talk will also touch on other new Apache Spark 3.1 functionality, such as pluggable caching, which can be used to enable faster dataframe access when operating from GPUs.

Abstract: A case study of how Pinterest uses Puppet to manage its infrastructure. Pinterest has hundreds of Amazon EC2 virtual servers and uses Puppet Dashboard as the “source of truth” about its server inventory. Pinterest built a REST API for this database, which powers tools and automated scripts that integrate Puppet with internal systems and with Amazon Web Services.
Speaker Bio: Ryan Park leads operations and infrastructure at Pinterest, one of 2012’s fastest growing web sites. Pinterest’s entire infrastructure is in the cloud, built atop hundreds of Amazon EC2 virtual server instances. Ryan introduced Puppet to their infrastructure as soon as he joined the company, and they now use Puppet as the primary tool for managing their infrastructure. Prior to joining Pinterest, Ryan was the Head of Operations at PBworks, an online team collaboration service.

Agile Data Science 2.0 covers the theory and practice of applying agile methods to the practice of applied analytics research called data science. The book takes the stance that data products are the preferred output format for data science teams to effect change in an organization. zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

PowSyBl is an open source project hosted by LF Energy, which offers a comprehensive set of features for electrical grid modelling and simulation. Among other advanced features, PowSyBl provides:
- A fully editable and extendable library for grid component modelling;
- Visualization tools to display your network;
- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
