QUENTIN
TARANTINO
By Harry Bilk
What is his mark?
There are certain directors who are known for their specific camera shots and angles in
their films; one of these is QuentinTarantino. With 30 years of directing, producing and
writing films under his belt,Tarantino has won an incredible 128 awards and 5 of these are
Oscars. Being one of the most successful directors of all time,Tarantino has made a
reputation for himself as being one of the craziest directors of his time.Trademark things
thatTarantino use include:
■ Camera shots.
■ Theming.
■ Over the top violence.
List of Awards: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000233/awards
Actors he Usually works with
■ QuentinTarantino – 8 Films. This is a bit of a strange once as he himself has made the
most appearances in his films
■ Samuel L. Jackson – 5 Films. Samuel L. Jackson comes in at second with appearances
inTarantino’s movies spanning over a decade.
■ Harvey Keitel – 4 Films. Harvey comes in at third where he usually plays a side
character rather than a main role.
■ UmaThurman – 3 Films. Uma comes in at fourth where she has appeared in 3 movies
Django Unchained
■ Django Unchained is oneTarantino’s great films. A good example of his trademark
camera shots is the crash zoom when Leonardo DiCaprio character is introduced, this
shot is used to draw the audience’s attention to a specific part of the screen. This is
also seen in Kill Bill which was also made byTarantino.
■ The theme used in this film is trademarkTarantino as the theme is spaghetti western
this has been used by him in recent years with films like the Hateful Eight, he make
these films to pay tribute to the dying genre.
■ Over the top violence is also used in this film multiple times, an example is when
Django shoots someone they would explode with their guts flying everywhere.
Kill Bill
■ This film is another example whereTarantino uses his trademark Crash Zoom. The use
of the crash-zoom in this scene gives the feel of a 1970s ‘kung-fu’ movie, where the
master teaches the student through the use of a montage. The camera zooms into the
wooden board as Pai Mei powers his fist through it with no trouble to show the
experience that he has that makes him a master.
■ The theme of Kill Bill is once again dark and over the top violence with blood and guts
everywhere. This is used byTarantino as he wants to capture the audiences attention.
Inglorious Bastards
■ This is another example where the crash zoom is used as in the theatre scene it zooms
in on the gunman, this is used as it breaks the calmness of the scene and it creates
discomfort for the audience.
■ The theme of this film once again uses the over the top violence whether it is the
theatre scene or the scene where the ‘Bear Jew’ beats a Nazi to death with a baseball
bat.
