5. Narrative Structure
• Part 1- equilibrium, gradually builds up to the climax in part 2 by using intense,
gripping music. Fades are used in between the shots to make sure they don’t reveal too
much and keep subtlety. The titles then introduce ‘QUENTIN TARANTINO’ first to draw
peoples attention as he is a very successful, well known artist and is known for
producing excellent movies.
• Part 2, Music climax’s as the title for ‘UMA THURMAN’ appears, this is because she is
the main protagonist. This is also where all of the disruption occurs, cut edits are used
at a faster pace to excite the audience, a lot of action clips are used suggesting the
genre of the film. Key antagonists are introduced one after another to make it more
transfixing.
• Part 3, The musics goes back down to how it was in part 1 whilst we see the
protagonist trying to fix the disruption and gaining more control. The titles are still
being used to inform the audience through out the rest of the trailer in between clips.
As the film comes to an end the title ‘KILL BILL’ comes up in the same white, yellow and
black colour scheme they used through out, colours that contrast making it edgy and
usual, not just following simple colour structures.
6. Camera and mise en scene
Tarantino has paid a lot of attention the detail in this film, he demonstrates this
through the Mise en Scene e.g the iconic jumpsuit that the protagonist wears, this
is a very bold, contrasting costume which whilst helping her stand out from the
crowd also symbolises the famous Bruce Lee. By giving this costume to the lead
character it also represents postmodernism as she is female and usually this hero
role would be played by a man. This challenges the meta narrative.
In this shot Uma is seen riding a yellow and black motor
bike which whilst keeping to the iconic black and yellow
theme Tarantino had going on also represents
postmodernism by making the female character daring
and tough.
7. Tarantino has challenged stereotypical action films by giving the characters old
fashioned weapons to fight with such as samurai swords, knives, maces etc but whilst
still fighting in modern settings. This also challenges the meta narrative and makes a
change to the usual gun shot kill that takes only a few seconds making his film more
excitable and keeps you on the edge.
Tarantino has used unusual camera techniques to make the footage more postmodern.
For example he has used canted angles, birds eye views, extreme close ups and hand
held shots/zooms.
At the beginning Tarantino used two
extreme close up shots after each other to
break into the trailer causing a intriguing
intense feeling. Whilst also using a gun as
the prop to start with setting the genre as
An action film. It is also quite ironic and
there isn’t many guns used in the film,
Instead they use samurai weapons etc.
8. When introducing or showing the antagonists
Tarantino has used low angle shots to make them
look powerful and dominating compared to using high
angle shots on the protagonists making them look
weak and vulnerable. This is very ironic considering
that the protagonists mostly defeat the antagonists
throughout the movie.
9. Editing and sound
Slow motion is used to make some of the
shots last for longer periods of time so we
can see everything in view. It is used to
Create more tension and mystery whilst also
over exaggerating scenes making action clips
more pronounced and memorable. It is also
an example of hyperreality as whilst
watching it our brains process it as being
ordinary when actually it is an obvious
effect.
10. They use black and yellow for the title screens to maintain
The colour scheme throughout the film.
Standard edit cuts are used in between most of the shots to
match the fast pace action but in a few shots where the
pace is slower such as my first image ‘BY QUENTIN
TARANTINO’ they use a graduated Fade.
Most of the sound in this trailer is non diegetic including
the music and the SFX for the sword clashes punches etc
that are used to enhance what is happening on the screen.
The music selected is called ‘Battle without honor or
humanity’ by Tomoyasu Hotei. This is a very cliché fighting
song and a lot of pastiches are made from it. I think
Tarantino used this to make obvious how over exaggerated
his fight scenes are.
