Etymology Australia got its name from old Latin America, “Australia” which means “Of the South”.  Australia is also nick named “The Land Down Under” because it is far in the south.
History The first human habitation in Australia was estimated to be 42 to 48,000 years ago. The origin of Australians was from South East Asia, they arrived through land bridges following their food (They were all hunters).
Geography Australia is surrounded by three different oceans they are the Indian Ocean, the southern Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.  The world’s largest coral reef lies a short distance of the north east coast and extends for 2,000 kilometers.
Culture Australia has a very wide culture. Australia has an active tradition of music ballet and theatre. Each city in Australia has an Orchestra.
Climate This is a map of the climate percentage change in April 2007. Australia is hot in the deserted areas, but is sunny in summers and warm in winters. The climate is moderate and the winds are fairly fast.
Animals As you know in Australia there are many animals that are not in other countries. For example you cannot find kangaroos outside Australia. Koalas, Platypus, Tasmanian devil and the Numbat are very rare animals that you cannot find outside Australia. http://youtube.com/watch?v=xu_CYslo1SI
The Australian Flag
The Australian Flag   continue  The Australian flag came into being on January the first 1901.  The Southern cross is in the second quarter and the fourth quarter. It consists of five stars and is shaped in a kite like pattern.
The Australian Flag  continue The Union Jack in the first quarter represents Australia’s Historical links with Great Britain.  The Commonwealth Star in the third quarter has seven points. The six points represent the Territories and states. The Seventh point was added in 1909.
Interesting Facts Australia is not an Independent Country.  Australia is the largest Island in the world, but is the smallest continent.  Australia’s Christmas holiday comes in the middle of the summer.
Sports 23.5% Australians over the age of 15 regularly participate in organised sporting activities. Some famous sports in Australia are cricket, rugby, hockey, netball and swimming. Australia has hosted 1956 and 2000 summer Olympics.
Islands If you would like to go to an Island in Australia you could go Queensland Island, Tasmanian Islands and Kangaroo Island.  All of those Islands are famous for their amazing wild life and beautiful rolling sandy beaches.
States and Territories  New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia, are the six territories in Australia. There are two major territories in Australia they are Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory.

Vacation If you would like to go on a vacation to Australia you will have a billion choices! You can go to areas like Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Tasmania, Darwin and Melbourne. We will take one of the choices and choose going to Brisbane, Queensland. In Brisbane we will visit the Australia Zoo.
