hit those long, cold and dreary days of winter.
Austin Community Education works to get quality
programming planned for you and your family to
provide you with classes, workshops and trips that
will enrich your lives and help make the winter fly
by. Take the time to look through our catalog and

CrossFit 101 – Total Fitness

Join us for our CROSSFIT 101 - Introduction to CrossFit Intended for anyone looking to try or
learn more about CrossFit and join an awesome fitness community! This class is designed to introduce you to the CrossFit
methodology, the core CrossFit movements and the intensity of the workouts. You will be running, jumping, rowing, and
throwing balls in the air. You’ll be performing squats, deadlifts, presses, ring rows, thrusters, lunges, and sit ups. You will
sweat. Don’t worry though, everything is designed to scale to your ability. This class will meet four consecutive weeks beig-
inning January 4th on Saturdays at 10:00am. Participants are invited and encouraged to join Wednesday's Metabolic
Conditioning Workouts at 5:00pm in January. Each session will be jammed packed full of knowledge, quality instruction
and FUN! Participants will be motivated, ready to take over the world and begin their journey to being stronger, faster and
healthier! Together we will warm-up, learn skills, movement concepts, exercises, basic conditioning and basic mobility.
This program is perfect for beginners interested in the benefits CrossFit can bring towards their fitness goals. Wear comfort-

Learn the fun and fast growing game of pickleball. In this beginner class you will
learn basic pickleball rules, technique and game strategy. You will have lots of time
to practice, play and gain confidence among others who are also new to the sport.

Hypnosis can help you control your eating habits and stop cravings. Learn to
desire the right foods, push your plate away when full and get motivated to
exercise and drink more water. If you are tired of spending money on diet pro-

You've tried the rest. Now try the best truffles of all - and you will make them yourself! This is one of Nancy's
most popular classes. She has shown thousands of students how to make these rich, chocolatey delicacies. With
just one 3-hour class, you'll be making truffles for all of those special occasions from graduations to weddings to
gifts and more! We will make five different recipes in class and each student will take home a nice box of 15-18
truffles. Plus, we'll sample some other chocolate-dipped treats in class. A $12 supply fee will be collected in
class. Optional truffle/candy kit will be available for purchase for future candy making projects. Price of this kit
is $18. We are sorry, but we cannot accommodate nut allergies in this class.

Como Zoo Conservatory
Have you had a behind the scenes guided tour of Como Conservatory and Gardens? We have scheduled a pri-
vate group tour! Travel through the many gardens of the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory as you explore the
Jewel of Como and learn about our rich history. Go behind-the-scenes and uncover how the garden staff keep
the conservatory looking lush and green all year long and produce the many spectacular and beloved Sunken
Garden flower shows. This tour is a unique opportunity to “peek behind the curtains” of the Marjorie McNeely
Conservatory and get your daily dose of green! We will then go to Keg and Case Market located on the historic
grounds of the iconic Schmidt Brewery. The Market is a culinary and retail marketplace — a true community
hub for the Twin Cities. Inside the market you'll find a combination of chef-driven restaurants, craft beer and a
uniquely curated market brimming with an eclectic mix of regional goods. Trip includes motorcoach transporta-
tion and Como tour. Lunch is on your own. The bus will depart from the Walmart parking lot at 7:30 am and
return at 5:30 pm. Registration deadline February 7th.

Need to get out of the house or work for the day? Need to have time with friends
to relax, chat, and browse a few fun shops? Join us for a day in Woodbury and
Eagan! We will start the day visiting a super jam-packed seasonal shop bursting at
the seams with all things spring and Easter. We will then make a couple stops at
some very cute boutiques that specialize in handmade or made in Minnesota—
and of course an amazing supply of curated items too. Then on to the outlet mall
in Eagan. Lunch is on your own at the Twin Cities Premium Outlets. The bus will depart from the Walmart
parking lot at 7:45 am and return at 5:30 pm. Registration deadline is Monday, March 16th.

View fresh floral creations and the artworks that inspired them. Enter a world of timeless art and fresh flowers
at the annual Art in Bloom – a four-day festival of fresh floral arrangements and fine art at the Minneapolis
Institute of Art. Delight in over 150 floral designs in this Twin Cities rite of spring! Fee includes motor coach

Mom's Day Out
Have a hard to buy for mom or special woman in your life? We have the perfect gift! We have the perfect day
planned to help you celebrate that special woman in your life! Start the day relaxing on our deluxe coach bus
chatting as you are driven to our destinations for the day-no worries about driving and parking. Our first stop of
the day is at Bachman’s flagship store on Lyndale. Enjoy looking at the newly stocked for spring garden center,
their home décor, clothing & jewelry, or sit in the garden area enjoying a cup of coffee and pastry. We will then
head out to several gloriously flower filled garden centers with many unique and familiar flowers and plants. A
delicious lunch stop is also on the schedule for the day. The bus will depart from the Walmart parking lot at

Gelena & Dubuque Spring Getaway
Pack your bags for this fun weekend adventure. We will depart Thursday
morning and travel to Marquette Iowa for a wine tasting and lunch. In
Galena we are staying at the historic DeSoto House Hotel, breakfast
and luggage service is included. Thursday night we will visit 3 historic
homes in Dubuque for progressive dinner. Friday morning starts with a visit the National Mississippi Museum
and Aquarium in Dubuque. You’ll have time for lunch on your own in Dubuque and, if you like, ride the
Fenelon Elevator. Friday afternoon you’ll have time to visit the quaint shops of Galena, before heading back to
Dubuque for a dinner cruise on the Mississippi. Saturday morning we’ll do a trolley tour of Galena and stop at
the Ulysses S. Grant home for a tour. Lunch and shopping will be on your own before we board the bus around
2:00pm to head for home. Hotel info: Once the principal river port of the Upper Mississippi Valley, Galena
reached its economic peak during the 1850’s. With the coming of the Illinois Central Railroad, a group of local
investors formed the “Galena Hotel Company” and built a grand hotel to reflect the growing prosperity of this
“Metropolis of the Northwest.” Named for the discoverer of the Mississippi River, the DeSoto House opened on
April 9, 1855 and was billed as the “Largest Hotel in the West.” Space is limited. The bus will depart from the
Community Learning Center at 9:00am Thursday, April 30th and return at approximately 5:30pm on Saturday,

AARP Smart Drivers Safety Refresher Class
Ages 50 & up
The AARP Smart Driver Course, offered by AARP Driver Safety, is the nation’s largest classroom and online
driver safety course and is designed especially for drivers age 50 and older. By taking a driver safety course, you'll
learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques and how to operate your vehicle more safely in
today's increasingly challenging driving environment. You'll learn how you can manage and accommodate com-
mon age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. After completing the course you will receive a
certificate of completion that can be presented to your insurance agent for a possible reduction in your auto
insurance premiums. Bring your Minnesota Driver's License to class. AARP members should be able to pro-
vide your membership number to the instructor at the class. Feel free to bring a snack and beverage. Class is
located at The Cedars of Austin, 700 1st Drive NW, Austin, MN. Park in the parking lot off North Main

Ages 50 & up
Improve your skills and qualify for insurance discounts at 55 or older by completing this 8-hour classroom driver
education class. Topics include how to compensate for the effects of aging and medication on driving, traffic
hazards, accident prevention and more. Bring your Minnesota Driver's License and a writing utensil to class.
Eligible participants are 50 years and older. AARP members should be able to provide your membership number
to the instructor at class. Feel free to bring a snack and beverage. Class is located at The Cedars of Austin, 700

He is back! Everyone's favorite snowman, Olaf. Frozen 2 was back in theaters in
November! Join Sunshine and Roses to paint your very own OLAF! Instructions will
be step by step and kids do not need any art experience. Class fee includes 11''x14''
canvas, all supplies and step by step instructions. This class is open to all ages! Class
is geared towards school age. Under school age will need an assistant, adults are wel-
come and encouraged to register and paint too.

Two canvases per painter! Pint Sized Picasso! Who doesn't love a
fluffy cat? Register your young artist to create and paint their own

and create on their canvas! This will be very fun and a great experi-

Home Alone - Lori Hameister

Is your child ready for the independence of being home alone?
Parents need to be sure their children have the skills and maturi-
ty to handle the responsibility safely. Whether it’s for an hour
after school or several hours a day during the summer, being
trusted to be home alone can be a positive experience for a child who is mature and well prepared. This class for
children will address several topics relating to being “Home Alone” including age guidelines, safe habits, house
rules, after school routines, phone calls and door knocks, dog emergencies, personal safety, handling the unex-
pected, gun safety, severe weather, fire safety, intruders, and first aid tips. Students attend this class independ-
ently. Students are welcome to bring a snack. Parents are encouraged to review the take home information and
discuss it with their child.

Coding - Advanced Scratch Video Games - {YEL}
2nd-5th Grade
STEM Video Game Enrichment for the 21st Century learner. This {YEL!} Advanced Video Game class follows
four basic components: • Teach It!…Students learn advanced and review intermediate video game design tech-
niques (animation, cumulative scoring, conditional statements, etc.) • Code It!… Students use Scratch® to
code their own video games: i.e. maze runner, asteroid smash and more. • Explore It!…Students can write their
own video game code, experiment with it and test new options. Our collaborative learning environment
encourages students to learn from each other. • Keep It!…Students can keep their video games online with
Scratch® and can access it and expand upon it at anytime. Sign up today to THINK, LEARN and PLAY

CABS: Child and Baby-Sitting Certification - Lori Hameister

The Child and Babysitting Safety (CABS) program from the American Safety
and Health Institute gives everything you need to know for safe and successful
babysitting. The YouTube “vlogger” style presentation of the video brings a
youthful and high-energy spirit to the program content, and the colorful maga-
zine format of the student book makes learning fun. From getting started with
your business, to working with parents and children, to key safety, caregiving,
and first aid tips, CABS will help set you up for babysitting success. Students
must be present for the entire class and complete achievement of the core
learning objectives to receive certification valid for two years. Instructor provides baby dolls, bottles, diaper sup-
plies for skills participation. Students attend this class independently. Students are welcome to bring a snack.
Parents are encouraged to review the take home information and discuss it with their child.

Be Prepared, Not Scared! - Lori Hameister

Have you ever seen someone fall and hurt their leg? Or perhaps you know someone who's been very ill? Have
you ever been near an accident? Imagine being able to help in each of these situations - that's what First Aid is
all about. Children can make a difference in an emergency situation and the most important thing is for them
to know simple basic first aid steps to follow in different situations. Topics include: recognizing an emergency
and knowing what to do, calling 911, basic first aid techniques, personal safety tips, tricky people, gun and fire
safety. Students attend this class independently. Students are welcome to bring a snack. Parents are encouraged
to review the take home information and discuss it with their child.

Pizza Plates - Color Me Mine

Paint your very own pizza plate to eat your pizza from! Color Me Mine will bring all of the
supplies and paints, you bring your creativity. Plates will be painted in class then taken back
to the Color Me Mine in Rochester studio for glazing and firing. They will be delivered a
week later to the CLC office to take home. Paints are non-toxic and the plates will be food-
safe when returned!

REGISTRATIONINFORMATION
When should I register?
• Now! Many classes fill quickly. Often instructors need to order supplies.
• Help ensure that your class has enough students by registering at least a week ahead of the start date.
• Registering early will reserve your spot in classes or trips that fill early.
• Please include your daytime phone number and an email address so we can reach you with any class changes.
Where do I go to register in person?
• The Community Education office is in the Community Learning Center. This is located on the North side
of the Queen Angels Church, 912 1st Ave NE.
Why pay by credit card?
• Register online and know immediately if you are in the class.
• Credit card refunds are processed within a day or two. Refund checks are mailed by our district business
office. Allow 7-10 days
Can I use Medica benefits?
• Medica is accepted. Include your member ID number when registering. We will call Medica to verify appli-
cable benefit.
Are there accommodations for people with disabilities?
• Your participation is our goal. Please call 460-1706 to discuss situation.
What happens when a class is cancelled?
• All fees are refunded if a course is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment or filled before we receive your
registration.
• Classes are cancelled two business days prior to start date if there is insufficient enrollment. Avoid the dis-
appointment of class cancellations by registering early and inviting a friend to register with you.
Will classes be held if the weather is questionable?
• When Austin Public Schools cancels school or is dismissed early, all Community Education classes are can-
celled.
• Every attempt will be made to contact you by phone or e-mail however, this is not always possible.
• Cancellation notices are announced on local radio and television stations.
• A re-scheduled date will be made available in most circumstances.
What if I want a refund?
• Call 460-1706 as soon as possible.
• Full refund minus a $3 processing fee will be given if we are notified at least five business days prior to the
class you wish to withdraw.
• No refunds given within 5 business days prior to class start.
• No refunds will be issued for trips or special events.

answer.

Austin Community Education follows the Austin Public School policy
regarding school closings and cancellations. If school begins late due to
inclement weather, morning classes will not be held. If school dismiss-
es early, afternoon and evening classes will be cancelled. If school is
closed for the day, there will not be any classes for Community
Education.

Our mission is to provide life-long learning to the Austin community.

The Community Learning Center houses Adult Basic Education, Community Education,
Kids Korner is a quality preschool and school
age child care program. Our goal is to pro-
vide a safe place for children before and after
school, on specified non-school days and
during the summer. We provide an environ-
ment that encourages adventure, creativity,
healthy self-concepts, respect for others,
responsible behavior and a positive attitude.
Kids Korner Sites:
Community Learning Center provides care for toilet trained chil-
dren ages 3-5 who are enrolled in ECFE and ECSE Preschool pro-
grams with limited community spots available.
Austin Public Elementary Schools (Banfield, Neveln,
Southgate, Sumner, and Woodson):
Providing quality before and after school care for Austin Public
School children kindergarten through 4th grade. Woodson site is
open 6:15-8:30 a.m. and 1:50-6:00 p.m. Other elementary sites are
open 6:15 a.m.-8:10 a.m. and 2:40-6:00 p.m.
Enrollment and Registration Information:
Children ages 3 years old through 4th grade may be enrolled pro-
viding space is available at the age appropriate site. A three (3)
business day wait period is required for all families to allow for pro-
cessing of paperwork and appropriate staffing. Registration forms
can be obtained by calling the Kids Korner main office at 507-460-
1706 or online at www.austin.k12.mn.us. A non-refundable regis-
tration fee of $50 per child or $100 maximum per family is required
at registration. Registration fee covers 2019-2020 school year.
Child Care Rates:
Kids Korner Enrollment - Kindergarten - 4th grade weekly mini-
mum charge $25 per child. After reaching the $25 weekly mini-
mum, $3.50 per hour per child rate is charged.
Kids Korner CLC Enrollment - parents can select the contracted
rate that fits their needs. See Parent Manual or registration form for
more information.
