Cognitive Abilities Critical Thinking and Information Literacy
Cognitive Abilities Highlights from a discussion question: ,[object Object]
Historically, women were not allowed to vote, own land, occupy a job, obtain an education at certain colleges, or choose a marital partner.
The term “rule of thumb” originated from English common law, which allowed a husband to beat his wife with a whip or stick no bigger in diameter than his thumb. (dynamic.uorgeon.edu 1998)
Cognitive Abilities Western culture has changed in contemporary society ,[object Object]
It is not uncommon in today’s society for a man to stay home and raise the children and a woman to be the career minded parent, supporting the family.
Cognitive Abilities Still a road that needs move traveling: ,[object Object]
Leadership positions in most businesses are occupied by more men than women, even though more women are earning graduate degrees than men. (Argosy University 2009)  References: Freyd. J. J. 1998. Research Skills Research Skills
Research Skills How did Darwin arrive at his particular theory?   “Charles Darwin describes his theory of evolution, the single most influential theory in the biological sciences.” (Pinel 2009 p. 23) Darwin documented the evolution of fossil records, described the similarities (human’s hand to a bird’s wing and a cat’s paw) which suggested evolution from common ancestors. (Pinel 2009).       Explain natural selection and evolution and how they are related.   “Darwin argued that natural selection, when repeated fro generation after generation, leads to the evolution of species that are better adapted to surviving and reproducing in their particular environmental niche.” (p. 25) Darwin explained that nature has a way of selecting the fittest animals to carry the genes needed to evolve and survive in future generations. (Pinel 2009).   Reference: Pinel, J. P. J. 2009. Biopsychology. Seventh Edition. Pearson Education Inc. New York NY.
Communication Skills Communication Skills: Oral and Written
Communication Skills When I communicate with another person I listen, look and react. I listen to the tone of their voice, I listen to what they are saying, I ask questions as needed and I pay attention to their facial expressions and body language. At times I have felt that I understand how someone is feeling without saying a word to them just by paying attention to their non-verbal cues. I have been told before that I am easy to talk to because I don’t just hear what the person I am communicating with is saying I listen to what they are saying. I was told once that the difference is that you hear back ground noise and when you listen you know where the back ground noise is coming from and all of the intricate details of it.
Ethics and Diversity Awareness Ethics and Diversity Awareness
Ethics and Diversity Awareness Ethical codes are developed for by professional organizations to assist in regulating power positions, ensure welfare of clients, exist as a natural part of the process, serve as a statement of principles, and indicate the mission/goals of the professional and professional organization. (Argosy University 2009)
Ethics and Diversity Awareness Ethical dilemmas are a part of counseling. (Argosy University 2009) A counselor should be completing a monthly check to ensure they are meeting ethical guidelines and they can always refer to the APA or ACA to ensure they are meeting ethical guidelines. (Argosy University 2009) Some guidelines to follow would be recognition of a problem, defining the problem, develop and choose a solution, review of the process and implementation of the solution as well as continued evaluation and reflection. (Argosy University 2009) A psychologist may know that there was a violation as it may be brought up by another provider, should that be the case APA (2003) indicates that if informal resolution is appropriate that intervention approach should be attempted first. If no, then the breach should be reported and there may follow an ethical investigation. (APA 2003)   References: Argosy University (2009) PSY 430 myeclassonline.com   American Psychological Association (2003) apa.org/ethics   American Counseling Association (2005) counseling.org/
Foundations of Psychology Foundations of Psychology
Foundations of Psychology Consciousness is being awake, recognizing objects and being able to describe those objects by using senses, vision, sound, touch, smell, taste and memory recognition. (Argosy University 2009) The physiological processes of perception and attention play roles in consciousness. Perception is selection, organization and interpretation of sensory input; the process of achieving information regarding the external and internal environments, integrating that information with past memory, recognizing the information and interpreting it.(uwf.edu) At any point in time there are millions of stimuli going on in the internal and external environment, attention refers to how we process the information in the environments. (Argosy University 2009)
Foundations of Psychology As we have learned, information signals pass through the brain and take various neural pathways as it progresses into conscious thought. (Argosy University 2009) I agree with Cotterill’s statement. The justification I would use is if a person is unable to sense feel, touch, listen, see, and taste, then they would also be unable to and recognize and organize this information with past memory – items that are important for a conscious state.      References: Uwf.edu. 2009. What is Perception. Retrieved on July 23, 2009 from: http://www.uwf.edu/jgould/perception.pdf   Argosy University. (2009) PSY 350 myeclassonline.com
Applied Psychology Applied Psychology
Applied Psychology Since drug use in school is a real life problem the research design would be applied research (Argosy Lecture Notes 2011 p1 ¶2 M4). There are two variables that are not being manipulated (frequency and drug use) therefore this would be considered correlational research (Argosy Lecture Notes 2011 p1 ¶5 M4). The survey that I would set up would be on-line to remain anonymous. The survey would ask the teenagers to respond to questions about their thoughts, feelings and behaviors regarding drug use (Argosy Lecture Notes 2011 p2 ¶1 M4). Since the subject matter can be considered sensitive I would ensure that each question had a choice for not applicable or that participants could skip the question along with a disclaimer explaining that each participant had the right to refuse to answer or participate (Argosy Lecture Notes 2011 p2 ¶4 M4). This research must have the approval of the IRB or else the school could lose its accreditation or license (Argosy Lecture Notes 2011 p1 ¶4 M2).    References: Argosy University. (2011). • 18. • 20.

  • 26. 2009. • 28. (2011).
