Audience research analysis
Jade Thompson
How I received my audience research
• The way that I gained my audience research was by setting a range of
questions which were
– Do you watch soap opera?
– If so which ones do you watch?
– If you were going to watch a soap opera which one of these story-lines would
appeal to you most?
• an affair
• bullying
• drugs
• mental health
• a murder
– Why have you chosen that option?
• I then filmed five different interviews using theses questions. The
individuals in the interview range from the ages of 13-18. I have now gone
though the feedback and answers of these questions, which will help me
with deciding which storylines to use and what to avoid.

Do you watch soap operas?
What I found
• When undertaking my audience research I found that
not many teenagers actually watch soap operas
however, still more do then don't. This has allowed
me to realise that I should widen my target audience
to reach a older audience and overall aim my soap
opera to 16-30 year old.
What I found
• I also found out which soap operas they watch
which is helpful as I can now you see what
they show is most popular for this age range.
What I found
Why people watch soaps Why people don’t watch soaps
“Interesting” “Boring”
“Funny” “Can’t keep up with them”
“Dramatic” “Repetitive”
“Just on the telly” “Quite boring”
“Drama”
“Nothing else on TV”
• From now being aware of how the audience can perceive soap
operas I will try to make my soap dramatic, interesting and
entertaining but avoid making it unoriginal and boring. If I
successfully do this then it could attract a wider audience.

Most enjoyable to watch
• One of the questions that I asked was what storyline appeals to you
most out of an affair, bullying, drugs, mental health and murder.
• Some of the audience said that the soap could link several different
storylines. I like this idea as it makes it more exciting but also then
reaches a wider audience by having a little bit for everyone.
What I found
Age and sex of soap watchers
year 9 male no
year 9 femal yes
year 12 male yes
year 12 female yes
year 13 male no
year 13 female no
• From looking at my research by the year group and the
sex of the individual. I have become aware the high the
year group they are less likely to watch the show. I also
found the female are more likely to watch the show
over males.
