Marketing research process
A process used to collect data about marketing programs, external environments, and consumer markets In an attempt to improve the quality of marketing.
The marketing research process is undertaken to answer a wide variety of questions, which might include: "Where do our guests come from? How frequently do people dine out in this area? In what types of restaurants do they most frequently dine? If the seating capacity of a restaurant is expanded by 20 percent, what impact will this have on sales and profits? If the city builds a new convention center, how many additional room nights is that likely to bring to the city?"
Conducting market research is not an inexpensive proposition, and when research is undertaken, care must be taken to ensure that proper methods are used. This is true whether the hospitality organization conducts its own market research or relies on external consultants. Market research data are only as good as the methodology used. If poor methodology is used, the results are not likely to describe the situation accurately, and marketing decisions based on this information are not likely to be very appropriate. Figure 6.3 contains the five steps involved in the marketing research process.

Step 1: Define the Problem
Before initiating any marketing research effort, a firm must decide whether marketing research is necessary. In general, marketing research should be undertaken if it clarifies a problem that could impact your business, if it helps in selecting between alternatives for achieving marketing objectives, if it assists in gaining a competitive advantage, or if it provides useful information on your markets.1 Marketing research may not be needed if the information is already available, there is insufficient time for marketing research, resources are not available, or costs of conducting the research outweigh the potential benefits of having the information.
If the decision is made to proceed with the marketing research, the research problem should be clearly defined. What does the research effort propose to do? What types of questions need to be asked? What solutions are sought? A strong tendency among all researchers, especially novice researchers, is to rush into data collection without giving adequate thought to defining the problem. This tendency should be vigorously avoided. A small amount of time sp.

Marketing Research: Process and
Systems for
Decision Making
College Instructor: Mr. A.T. Quiwa, MB
2. Objectives:
To know the important of marketing
research and its process/systems for
decision making.
Be Familiar with the role of marketing
research
To learn on how to prepare a research
report
To also know the limitations of the
Research Process
To have an idea about Marketing
3. What is Marketing Research
Marketing research is the process by which
information about the environment is
generated, analyzed, and interpreted for use in
marketing decision making.
It cannot be overstated that market research is an
aid to decision making and not a substitute for it.
Marketing managers should recognize and consider
their decision making based on the following ;
1. even the most carefully executed research can
be fraught with errors;
2. marketing research does not forecast with
certainty what will happen in the future;
3. They should make decisions in light of their
own knowledge and experience as no marketing
research study includes all of the factors that
4. The Marketing Research Process
The Five Ps of the Research Process
Purpose of the
research
Plan of the research
Performance of the
research
Processing of
research data
Preparation of
research report
5. Purpose of the Research
The first step in the research process is to determine
explicitly why the research is needed and what it is
accomplish.
Managers and researchers need to discuss and
clarify the current situation and develop a clear
understanding of the problem.
At the end of this stage, managers and research
should agree on;
1. the current situation involving the problem to be
researched.
2. the nature of the problem ; and
3. whether the company will do its own research is
designed to investigate.
Note: This step is crucial since influences the type of
research to be
6. Plan of the Research
Once the specific research question or questions
has been agreed upon, a research plan can be
developed.
A research plan spells out the nature of the
research to be conducted and includes an
explanation of such things as the sample design,
measures, and analysis techniques to be used.
Three critical issues that influence the research
plan are;
1. whether primary or secondary data are needed
2. whether qualitative or quantitative research in
needed; and
3. whether the company will do its own research
7. Primary versus Secondary Data
Given the information needed and budget
constraints, a decision must be made as to
whether primary data, secondary data, or some
combination of the two are needed.
Primary data are data collected specifically for
the research problem under investigation;
Secondary data are those that have previously
been collected for other purposes but can be
used for the problem at hand.
There are many sources of secondary data for
use in marketing research. Like IMS International,
and Information Resources, Inc. sell a variety of
useful data to companies.
8. Qualitative versus Quantitative Research
Qualitative research typically involves face-to-
face interview with respondents designed to
develop a better understanding of what they think
and feel concerning a research topic, such as a
brand name, a product, a package, or an
advertisement.
Two most common types of qualitative research
in marketing are focus groups and long
interviews.
Quantitative research involves more systemic
procedures designed to obtain and analyze
numerical data.
Four common types of quantitative research in
9. Four Common Types of Quantitative Research
Observational Research involves watching people
and recording relevant facts and behaviors.
Survey research involves the collection of data by
means of a questionnaire either by mail, phone, or in
person. This is commonly used in marketing research
to investigate customer
beliefs, attitudes, satisfaction, and many other issues.
Experimental research involves manipulating one
variable and examining its impact on other valuables.
For example, the price, of a product in one test store
could changed while left the same in other stores.
Mathematical modeling research often involves
secondary data, such as scanner data collected and
stored in computer files form retail check out
counters. This approach involves the development of
equations to model relationships among variables and
uses econometric and statistical techniques to
10. Company versus Contract
Research
Most large consumer goods companies have
marketing research departments that can perform
a variety of types of research.
However, there are many marketing research
firms, advertising agencies, and consulting
companies that do marketing research on a
contract basis.
A decision has to be made as to whether the
marketing research departments has the ability to
do a particular type of research itself or whether
all or part of the research should be contracted
with a research supplier.
11. Performance of the Research
Performance of the research involves preparing
for data collection and actually collecting them.
If secondary data are to be used, they must be
located, prepared for analysis, and possibly paid
for.
If primary data are to be collected, then
observational forms, questionnaires, or other
types of measures must be
designed, pretested, and validated.
In terms of actual data collection, a cardinal rule
is to obtain and record the maximal amount of
useful information, subject to the constraints of
time , money , and respondent privacy.
12. Types of Questions that Marketing
Research Can Help Answer
I. Planning
A. What types of people buy our product? Where
do they live? How much do they earn? How
many of them are there?
B. Is the market for our product increasing or
decreasing? Are there promising markets that
we have not yet reached?
C. Are there markets for our products in other
countries?

Research Can Help Answer
II.
Problem solving
A. Product
1. Which, of various product designs, is likely to
be the most successful?
2. What kind of packaging should we use?
B. Price
1. What price should we charge for our product?
2. As production costs decline, should we lower
our prices or try to develop a higher-quality
product?
14. Types of Questions that Marketing
Research Can Help Answer
C. Place
1. Where, and by whom, should our product be
sold?
2. What kinds of incentives should we offer to
induce the trade to push our product?
D. Promotion
1. How effective is our advertising? Are the right
people seeing it? Hoe does it compare with the
competition’s advertising?
2. What kinds of sales promotional devices-
coupons , contests, rebates, and so forth-
should we employ?

16. Processing Research Data
Processing research data includes the
preparation of data for analysis and the actual
analysis of them.
Preparation include such things as editing and
structuring data and coding and preparing them
for analysis.
Data sets should be clearly labeled to ensure
they are not misinterpreted or misplaced.
The appropriate analysis techniques for collected
data depend on the nature of the research
question and the design of the research.
17. Processing Research Data
Qualitative research data consist of interview records
that ate content analyzed for ideas or themes.
Quantitative research data may be analyzed in a
variety of ways depending on the objective of the
research.
A critical part of this stage is interpreting and
assessing the research results. Seldom, if ever, do
marketing research studies obtain findings that are
totally unambiguous.
Marketing research should always double-check their
analysis and avoid overstating the strength of their
findings. The implications for developing or changing
a marketing strategy should be carefully thought out
and tempered with judgment about the overall quality
of the study
18. Some Statistical Techniques Used in
Marketing Research
In many cases, researchers are interested in
investigating the impact of one or more variables(
called independent variables or predictor
variables) on another variable(called the
dependent variable or criterion variable)
In other types of marketing research, the goal
are to investigate differences between groups of
consumers or various measures or to group
variables or people into smaller sets.
19. List of Statistical Techniques used in the field.
Analysis of variance (ANOVA). A statistical procedure for
examining whether different samples came from
population with equal means. This procedure is
commonly used to compare the average or mean scores
for different groups in experiment to determine the
impact of a particular variables.
Conjoint analysis. A statistical technique in which
respondents’ valuations of attributes are inferred from
the preference they express for various combinations of
these attributes.
Cluster analysis. A Techniques that determine
concerned with developing empirical groupings of
objects based on a set of measures.
Correlation analysis. A technique that determines the
linear relationship between two variables. Correlation
20. List of Statistical Techniques used in the
field.
Cross tabulation. A technique that involves
counting the number of cases(usually people)
that fall into each of several categories when the
categories are based on two or more variables
considered at the same time.
Discriminant analysis. A technique used to model
the relationships between a criterion and a set of
predictor variables. The criterion variables is a
category (such as buyers and nonbuyers) in this
procedure.
Factor analysis. A body of statistical technique
concerned with the study of interrelationships
among a set of variables. It is commonly used to
reduce a large set of variables into a smaller set
21. List of Statistical Techniques used in the
field. ( contd)
Multidimensional scaling. An approach in which
people’s perceptions of the similarity of objects
and their preference among them are measured
and plotted in multidimensional space.
Regression analysis. A statistical technique used
to derive an equation that relates a single
criterion variables to one or more predictor
variables. It is commonly used in many types of
marketing research that investigate the impact of
various strategic elements on such things as
sales, profits, overall customer satisfaction, and
purchase intentions.
22. Preparation of Research Report
Research report should be clear and unambiguous
with respect to what was done and what
recommendations are made. Researchers should
work closely with managers to ensure that the study
and its limitations are fully understood.
Eight Criteria for Evaluating Marketing research
reports
1. Was the type of research appropriate for the
research questions?
2. Was the research well designed?
a. Was the samples studied appropriate for the
research question?
b. Were measures well developed, pretested, and
validated?
c. Were the data analysis techniques the best ones
23. Preparation of Research Report
Eight Criteria for Evaluating Marketing research
reports
3. Was the analysis conducted according to standards
accepted in the field?
4. Do the findings make sense given the research
question and design, and were they considered in
light of previous knowledge and experience?
5. Are the limitations of the study recognized and
explained in details?
6. Are the conclusion appropriately drawn or are they
over-or understand?
7. Are the recommendations for marketing strategy
clear and appropriate?
24. Limitation of the Research Process
Listed below are a number of problems that could
invalidate test marketing study results.
1. Test market areas are not representative of the
market in general in terms of population
characteristics, competition, and distribution
outlets.
2. Sample size and design are incorrectly formulated
because of budget constraints.
3. Pretest measurements of competitive brand sales
are not made or are inaccurate, limiting the
meaningfulness of market share estimates.
4. Test store do not give complete support to the
study such that certain package size may not be
carried or prices may not be held constant during
25. Limitation of the Research Process
Listed below are a number of problems that
could invalidate test marketing study results.
5. Test market products are advertised or
promoted beyond a profitable level for the
market in general.
6. The effect of factors that influence sales, such
as the sales force, season, weather
condition, competitive retaliation, shelf
space, and so forth, are ignored in the research.
7. The test market period is too short to determine
whether the product will be repurchased by
customers.
26. Ethical Responsibilities of Marketing
Researchers
Responsibilities to Respondents
1. Preserving respondent anonymity. Marketing
researchers should ensure that respondents’ identities
are safe from invasion of privacy.
2. Avoiding mental stress fro respondents.
3. Avoiding question detrimental to respondents.
4. Avoiding the use of dangerous equipment or
techniques. Physical or reputational harm to
respondents based on their participation in marketing
research should not occur.
5. Avoiding deception of respondents. Respondents
should not be deceived about the purpose of the study
in most cases.
6. Avoiding coercion of respondents. Marketing
researchers should avoid coercing or harassing people
27. Ethical Responsibilities of Marketing
Researchers
Responsibilities to Clients
1. Providing confidentiality.
2. Providing technical integrity. Marketing
researchers are obliged to design efficient
studies without undue expense or complexity
and accurately report results.
3. Providing administrative integrity. Marketing
researchers are obliged to price their work fairly
without hidden charges.
4. Providing guidance on research usage.
Marketing researchers are obliged to promote
the correct usage of research and to prevent the
misuse of findings.
28. Ethical Responsibilities of Marketing
Researchers
Responsibilities to Subordinate Employees
1. Creating an ethical work environment.
Marketing research managers are obliged to
create an ethical work environment where
unethical behavior is not encouraged or
overlooked.
2. Avoiding opportunities for unethical behavior.
Marketing research managers are obliged to
avoid placing subordinates in situations where
unethical behavior could be concealed but
rewarded.
29. Marketing Information Systems
A popular form of marketing information system
is the marketing decision support system, which
is a coordinated collection of data, tools and
techniques involving both computer hardware and
software by which marketers gather and interpret
relevant information for decision making.
These systems require three types of software:
1. Database management software for sorting
and retrieving data from internal and external
sources.
2. Model base management software that
contains routines for manipulating data in ways
that are useful for marketing decision making.
30. Marketing Information Systems
3. A dialog system that permits marketers to
explore databases and use models to produce
information to address their decisions-making
needs.
Internal information includes such things as
sales records, which can be divided by
territory, package size, brand, price order
size, or salesperson; inventory data that can
indicate how rapidly various products are
selling.
External information is gathered from outside
the organization and concerns changes in the
environment that could influence marketing
strategies. External information is needed
31. Conclusion
This chapter emphasized the importance of
marketing research for making sound marketing
strategy decisions. The chapter discussed
marketing research as a process involving
several stages, which include determining the
purpose of the research, designing the plan for
the research, performing the
research, processing research data, and
preparing the research report. Then, marketing
information systems were discussed and one
type, the marketing decision support system, was
explained. Such systems provide decision makers
with the right information, at the right time, in the
