The particulate matter is a mixture of very small-
diameter particles of dust suspended in the air.
Various types of chemical compounds are absorbed
on the surface of particulate matter, e.g. heavy metals
such as cadmium, lead and mercury.
Due to the small dimensions, particulate matter is a
significant threat to human health because it can
penetrate the lower levels of respiratory tract.
