Taking Information to Patients: Partnering to Create Library Satellites

After two years of implementing their strategic plan, LRG has made substantial progress on nine out of ten research projects and is seeking additional funds to continue their work towards finding a cure for GIST cancer.

Ranking Twitter Conversations
Our method ranks Twitter conversations by giving importance scores to tweets based on their position in conversations and the participating users. We filter tweets, create a word index considering SMS language, and score tweets based on term frequency and the tweet and user scores. Experimental settings included removing or adding constraints like stop words and duplicate words. Results were subjective as accurately evaluating conversations is difficult without contextual knowledge. Future work could infer conversation context and use precision/recall by programmatically tagging tweets.

The UAB Department of Radiation Oncology has implemented a new technique called triggered imaging to improve the accuracy of thoracic radiosurgery for lung cancer. Triggered imaging allows for real-time monitoring of tumor position during treatment to account for respiratory motion, which can cause tumors to move up to 4 cm. By implanting fiducial markers using navigational bronchoscopy, the multidisciplinary team is able to more precisely target radiation doses to tumors while minimizing doses to healthy tissue. This advancement enhances UAB's ability to offer a minimally invasive alternative to surgery for lung cancers.

Epidemiology and Biostatistics) at McMaster University, Ontario, Canada, and the Division of Cancer Epidemiology
and Genetics at the National Cancer Institute, Maryland, United States.
This course’s main purpose is to impart foundational knowledge in
the principles and practice of cancer epidemiology, specifically in
the areas of cancer etiology, surveillance, and survival analysis. The
etiology module will cover the design, analysis, and interpretation
of observational studies. The surveillance module will contain an
overview of the infrastructure needed to conduct cancer
surveillance, aspects of data quality, and tools for using the data
(standardization, age-period-cohort models). Finally, the survival
analysis module will include material related to life tables, survival
curves, survival time models, and the application of survival analysis
to screening trials and evaluation.
Other topics that may be covered include: cancer etiology and
surveillance in the local Indian setting, sample size calculation, and
risk factor surveillance. An important aspect of this course will be
hands-on exercises using examples to understand the theory and its
applications in cancer epidemiology.

ASTRO Funding Will Support New Research in Radiation Oncology

- 2. Introduction With an extensive background in radiation oncology, Aaron O. Williams, MD, founded Athens Cancer Center in 2006 to provide patients with personalized and compassionate care. Aaron O. Williams, MD, also conducts presentations on radiation oncology and is a member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology & Oncology (ASTRO). ASTRO recently announced that it presented $675,000 in grants and awards to seven physician-researchers dedicated to advancing the field of radiation oncology. ASTRO’s chair explains that the organization continually works to support and fund new medical graduates through its three award categories, including the ASTRO Residents/Fellows in Radiation Oncology Research Seed Award and the ASTRO Junior Faculty Career Research Training Award.

Radiation Oncology In 2015, the grants will finance work in radiation physics, comparative effectiveness research, translational research, outcomes/health services research, and radiation and cancer biology. The award winners are carefully chosen by the organization’s Research Grants Evaluation Committee and then accepted by ASTRO’s board of directors. Over the course of their projects, the researchers are also required to present a midterm and final report to ASTRO.
