Training requirements - 6 to 8 additional years of an internship, residency, and
one or more fellowships.
A residency in internal medicine, is necessary to apply for a
hematology/oncology fellowship.
Fellowships are limited in availability and are suffering a lack of funding.
Additional training increases educational costs and delays earning income to pay
off current student debt.
Oncologists earned on average $290,000 in 2013.
With 25 specialties surveyed, oncologists
are somewhere in the middle.
The highest-earning specialties were orthopedics ($413,000),
cardiology ($351,000), and urology and gastroenterology (both $348,000).
