grade APEnglish
class.The classismade up of 23 students;16 Caucasian,2 Japanese ForeignExchange,1Muslimand4
AfricanAmericans.The agesrange from16-18 years old.
A-Analyze the Learners:
General Characteristicsof the Learners:
The studentsare in a twelfthgrade APEnglishcourse comprisedof 23students. The students
range in age from 16-18 yearsold.None of the studentshave learningdisabilitiesbuttheyare culturally
diverse.Whilethe majorityof the studentsare white some2of the are Japanese foreignexchangeand
fourof themare AfricanAmericans.
SpecificEntry Competencies:
 Studentshadto be recommendedbyanotherteachertobe inthe AP EnglishClass
 Must have receivedaB or higherinall highschool Englishclasses
 Students ANDparentsmusthave signedandreturnedthe formstatingtheyhad read
and understoodthe requirementsstatedinthe syllabusforthiscourse.

Learning Styles:
A lotof the lessonswillbe available online,becausemostof the studentsare familiarwith
technologyandwithjusta little instructionare able tonavigate towhere theyneedtogo. The novel
itself, in-classdiscussion andtheirmid-termprojectall encompasslearningstylesforauditorylearners,
visual learnersandinteractive groupwork. Providingdifferentoutletsallowsstudentstoexplore
differentobjectivesandoutcomes.
S-State the Objective
Studentswill drawoutthe themesof the novel;specificallyfocusingon“lynching”andhow we can tie
that intoour historynow.We will lookatothersongs,poems,andarticlesviayoutube,andinternet
sourcesto researchthe historyof lynchingandthe emancipationof slavery.We will lookatthe poetry
as well.

and techniquesintheirownwriting,create andsustainargumentsbasedonreadings,research,or
personal experience,demonstrateunderstandingof standardwrittenEnglishandanalyze image astext

Today’swritingpromptwill come fromthe song“The HangingTree” respondviawikispaces,we will use
internetsources,YouTube,ournovel,pensandpaper.
U-Utilize MediaandMaterials
Previewthe Materials:
AnythingthatI presenttothe classfrom the internetorany otheroutside source thathasnot been
previouslyapprovedbythe school systemormyself will have tobe watchedinordertocensoranything
that wouldbe inappropriate forthe classroom.Ialsowill checkthe sourcesandmake sure thatall
material isfroma reliable source beforegivingittome students.
Prepare the Materials:
At the endof the previousweekIwill gatheranyoutside materialsthatImay needinorderto fulfill my
lessonsforthe followingweek.Daily,Iwill checktomake sure that everypiece of material Ihave isin
workingorderandup to date,all materialsare printedoff,all videosare readytoplay,and any other
lastminute detailsare takencare of.It isimportantespeciallywiththe use of the internettomake sure
everythingisproperlyupdatedandisinworkingorder, soasto not waste ininstructional time.
Prepare the Learners:
To prepare the studentsforeachday’slessonIwill referthembackto theirsyllabusandpointoutanyof
the objectsanddailyassignments,questions,andmainpointsbefore leavingeachday.I will make them
aware of the objectivesforthe daybyreiteratingquicklywhatwassaidbefore theyleftthe daybefore.
We will discussanyquestions,interpretanypiecesof the novel,andaskquestions.
Prepare the environment:
My role inthe classroomforthe majorityof the assignmentsthisweekisasa facilitator.So,itis
importantto keepthe roomopenforcommunication,understandingthatall ideas,beliefsandthoughts
are openlyacceptedforcritical thinking.ThisisanAPEnglishclassthe grade weighsheavilyon
appropriate openclassdiscussionsanditisimportantto keepthatrespectinthe classroom.
On a more physical level Iwouldlike tokeepthe physical space opensothateveryoneisable tosee one
anotherand openlycommunicate.ForthatI have our desksina large circle unlessgroupworkistaking
place inwhichcase theyare able to move aroundas theyseemfit.

My goal isto activelyengage withmystudentsandencourage themtocommunicate theirthoughts,ask
questionswhentheyneedtoandunderstandthatI have an opendoorpolicy.
Require Learner Participation:
Thisclass will notbe successful withoutthe student’sparticipationinthe classdiscussions,groupwork,
writingprompts,projects,etc.Because of thatIhave set aside 15% of the student’s grade onstudent
participation.
E-Evaluate and Revise
What workswell one yearmaynot workwell the next.Iwill quicklylearnthatwhatsome deemasa
great ideafortheirownclassroommaynot be the bestideaformine or vice versa.Itis imperativethatI
learnand keeptrackof everythingthatI dofor myself andmystudentssothat I donot waste theirtime
or my own.It isimportantto see howeachstudentinteractedinanassignment,orwhatsomeone may
needhelpwithandwe needtofocusa little harderonlater.EvaluatingwhatIam doingishelpful forme
and forthe studentinknowingwhattheyneedfromme andwhatI can give theminorderfor themto
be successful.Injusttakinga fewminuteseverydayoreveryotherdayto jot downsome notesIcan
betterevaluate andrevise lessonplanstobettersuite the needsof myparticularclassnow.
