This week your signature assignment takes you to the movies. For this assignment you will watch
one
of the movies listed below. Then you will write an analysis paper drawing on everything that you have learned in the course. You will analyze the movie and complete a cohesive and comprehensive paper responding to the prompts below. Ensure the paper is organized in a way that shows each of the prompts are addressed.
Identify the movie by title and year. Provide a 2-3 sentence overview of the movie plot. Identify the main characters and provide a 1-sentence description for each.
Extrapolate from the movie the individuals that are influenced by the study of or practice of psychology, provide an explanation for the disciplines or sub-disciplines that are involved in the movie. Utilize appropriate vocabulary and terminology in the extrapolation.
Identify the psychological disorder of the character(s) in the movie. Does the diagnosis explained in the movie align to the DSM? Once a diagnosis is made, does the label attached impact the character personally? Professionally? Socially?
Explain the main theoretical approach, strategies, and practices that are used in the study of psychology in the movie. Provide a background explaining the strategies, historical and modern practices, and historical scientists related to the identified discipline or subdiscipline of psychology. Utilize appropriate vocabulary and terminology in the explanation.
Considering the brain and lifespan development, how do the characters in the movie portray cognitive, social, and moral development?
Associate the movie characters, plot, and setting with seminal investigations and major findings in psychology. Explain the seminal investigation and the major psychological finding referred to and explain whether or not it is accurately portrayed in the movie. Explain the points that make it either accurate or inaccurate.
What are the stereotypes presented in the movie? How are they related to the study of psychology? Are there examples throughout the movie of gender roles? How are sensations and perceptions shown in the movie?

· What constitutes American music? (The first thought that comes to my mind when I ask this question is that if there were a true American music, it would have to be that of the American Indians who were the original inhabitants of this part of the world. This is true but as we all know, the European settlers savagely repressed the Native Americans and so little of their music was absorbed into the Euro/American culture.)
It is impossible to answer this question without considering the effect of African traditions on our musical heritage. Consider this quote from the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, who spent several years in the United States teaching and conducting concerts of his own music:
“I am now satisfied that the future music of this country must be founded upon what are called "negro melodies". This must be the real foundation of any serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States."
He was correct of course but I doubt he could ever have imagined the direction and diversity that school of composition would take. The "negro melodies" he was referring to are Negro Spirituals, work songs, field "hollers" and other such styles that developed in the South during the years of slavery. These songs are a blend of European musical traditions and African influences and are unique to the United States. They are rooted in the African American experience of slavery and the continuing struggle for freedom but if you think they are primarily political in that sense or racially exclusive, consider another quote for Dvorak:
"In the Negro melodies of America I discover all that is needed for a great and noble school of music. They are pathetic, tender, passionate, melancholy, solemn, religious, bold, merry, gay or what you will. It is music that suits itself to any mood or any purpose. There is nothing in the whole age of composition that cannot be supplied with themes from this source."
These "Negro melodies"- Spirituals, work songs, ragtime and the blues- are in fact at the heart of what American music has become. Everything from popular songs to jazz to "rock and roll" owe something to the style and energy of these songs.

In the context of the nature versus nurture controversy, nature means one’s genetic inheritance of traits such as intelligence, physical characteristics, and personality tendencies (Vander Zanden, Crandell, & Crandell, 2009). Nurture means the influence of environment, including parenting, schooling, physical environment, culture, and other factors (Vander Zanden et al., 2009). In the past, social scientists and others argued which factor—nature or nurture —was responsible in a given situation, but it is more common today to ask either how much is due to nature versus nurture, or how they interact (Vander Zanden et al., 2009). The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
