This essay arises from the personal interest of
the author in investigating some design strate-
gies which contribute to achieve high comfort
performances of the living space. The quality
of life inside a building is influenced by many
interconnected aspects, whose function is to
guarantee optimal internal conditions so that
occupants could live in perfect harmony with
the surrounding environment. The historical
evolution of architecture, until the advent of
buildings systems, shows how this objective is
reachable thanks to a bioclimatic approach,
where the constructive features of buildings
represent the best answer to the specific
climate contest in which they are built. In
recent times, the attention to outdoor stresses
could have an efficient impact on the standard
of thermal comfort predicted and, in the mean-
time, could reduce thermal loads. The aim of
this paper is to evaluate the impact of passive
design strategies on thermal comfort condi-
tions, through the dynamic simulation of a
building energetic model as a reference.
The initial phase of the work deals with an
accurate study of the Solar Decathlon
contest, an avant-garde international compe-
tition in terms of sustainable building design.
Through the analysis of the best houses
prototypes of the last five editions, the
connection between morphological and tech-
nological strategies adopted by designers is
outlined. The assessment is conducted
according to “quality indexes” of perfor-
mance, deducted from the evaluation system
of the competition. The software Design
Builder is used to determine the influence of
these solutions: the reference model,
presumed without technical plants, is located
in three different Italian sites whose climate
conditions differ considerably from each
other; then, the relevance of every passive
design strategy is examined in relation to
comfort parameters, inspecting the correla-
tion between each solution and comfort
indexes assumed. From the results, a series
of useful information for designers in the
preliminary stage are summarized, giving
them a qualitative tool for assessing the most
efficient configuration of the building concern-
ing occupants comfort quality.

finishing for industrial buildings.
COURSE NAME:
Building systems and components
design
ACADEMIC YEAR:
2013/2014
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
GGbox is a reinforced concrete precast
panel with the aesthetic and perfomance
quality of a Green facade.
The design of this product responds to the
requirements of sustainability,
thermal-acoustic comfort, air quality and
reduction of “Urban Heat Island” effect,
giving high architectural and landscape
value at the same time.
The solution allows the installation of a
wide variety of vegetable species and an
easy substitution of plants, fully integrated
with the fertigation system.
Particular attention is paid on the structur-
al resistance of the panel and the thermal
properties of its materials.
