Assignment Instructions for Cultural Presentations
Overview:
Because understanding the cultures that produced the texts we’re reading is vital, you will create
a ten-minute presentation on some aspect of the Greek and Roman worlds (see list below). To
accompany these presentations, you’ll create a PowerPoint presentation of about twelve slides
that you’ll upload to Blackboard so the whole class will have access to it.
Presentation Requirements:
I want you to have a good deal of freedom in deciding what to include in these presentations, so
these guidelines are intentionally loose.
1. Presentations should be about ten minutes long.
2. The PowerPoint that accompanies the presentation should be about twelve slides,
including a title slide and citations.
3. Try answering the five w’s:
a. Who
b. What
c. When
d. Where
e. Why
Topics:
Group 1: the function of a chorus in Greek theater Group 2: Greek amphitheaters
Group 3: Dionysian festivals Group 4: how did the Greeks treat actors?
Group 5: Roman theaters Group 6: the influence of Greek theater on
Group 7: Roman theater and politics Roman theater
Group 8: the Ludi Romani festival
Due Dates:
Groups 1-4 will present on Thursday, August 29
Groups 5-8 will present on Tuesday, September 3
Submission Guidelines:
Either before class or after the presentation, one group member will be responsible for uploading
their PowerPoint presentation to the “Study Guides and Cultural Presentations” discussion forum
on Blackboard.
Group Assessment:
At the beginning of the class period following your presentation, you will submit to me a paper
copy of an assessment of your group members’ performance in the project. Write one paragraph
or so per group member, including yourself. The structure of this assessment is up to you. I
won’t share these with anyone unless there is a serious concern.
