See:

- Credits are floating in the city showing its an extraordinary event in an every day world
- Shows the OTS in a city to set the scene
- Ident from columbia picture
- Very ambient high key lighting to show its set in an everyday world creating versamility
Hear:
- Dark orchestral music
- Deep strings music comes in after the title has been shown
- Towards the end you start to here diegetic sound to reinforce the idea that is set in a city
Feel:
- Based on the dark music and slow continuity editing, it creates a very serious atmosphere showing it is good at setting the genre
Elementary
See:
- Title is at the end of the OTS
- Credits(Producers, Directors and Actors Regular typography)
- Big city.
- Marble following a track
- Warm dark colours. (Black, brown dark red)
- Murder scene
Hear:
- Lots of upbeat strings instruments being played throughout
- As the marble goes further, more instruments come in
Feel:
- When the clip is muted, the audience will feel uneasy as they are seeing a combination of clips that seem to symbolise a violent
atmosphere as they have gun shot, blood, a head being smashed and a toy soldier trapped under a cage
- When you unmute the clip, you get a different feeling as the sound is very upbeat and you feel as if, rather than being violent
symbolism, we are following the progression of the marble and therefore feel good that this system has worked,
Similarities Differences
- Both set in a city
- Both use orchestral instruments
- Both have the credits for directors, producers and big names
- Both show the title in the OTS
- Neither introduce characters
- Both use serif text to create a serious atmosphere
- Both use continuity editing
- Elementary doesn’t have the Production companies Ident.
- Elementary has The title at the end of the film
- Panic room has the credits embedded into the world of the film while Elementary has just has
them layered on top
- Panic room has the title in the middle of the OTS while elementary has it at the end
- Panic room is linear while elementary is more symbolic
- Panic room uses a very ambient high key lighting while Elementary uses low key lights and a
dark colour palette

See:

- The setting of the film
- Newspapers which connote the history behind the film.
- Sans Serif text
Hear:
- Dark and dull music
- At some points, there is a scream. This connotes to the audience that certain parts of the film will be jumpy and unexpected.
Feel:
-From the OTS, the audience will feel that the film will be mysterious. This is shown from the pictures in the OTS. The audience
then feel that they are prepared for what they are about to see.
The Cabin in the
Woods
See:
- Credits(Producers, Directors and Actors)
- Cartoons that are hand drawn to help convey the images behind the making of the film.
- Dull colours are used throughout. (Black, White and Grey)
- Sans Serif and Serif text.
Hear:
- A violin is played throughout the OTS
Feel:
- The audience feel confused and slightly scared at the same time. The mix of the music with the images on screen convey a
distorted atmosphere.
- This then helps set the theme for the rest of the film.
Similarities Differences
- Both set in a setting which is abandoned.
- Both have elements of Sans Serif text.
- Both have orchestral instruments.
- Both have a symbolic OTS.
- The Conjuring has a black and white theme to it, while The Cabin in the Woods has a red
theme to it.
- The title in The Conjuring appears at the end while The Cabin in the Woods appears in the
middle.
- The Conjuring has a newspaper style to represent its history.
- The Cabin in the Woods has scenes from the film incorporated into the OTS.

-It’s based around Halloween, shown by decorations which connotes horror and danger. People in horror outfits.
-Someone in the window creating a narrative enigma.
Hear:
-Children having fun as it’s Halloween.
Feel:
-False sense of security.
-Feel spooked and safe at the same time as I don’t know what’s about to happen.
Aliens
See:
-Shadows of ghosts from the light of the moon as it’s night time.
-Black and white images of a house which creates a false sense of security feeling.
-Things moving without out being physically touched connoting ghosts / spirits.
Hear:
-The witches mocking laugh. A kids song being played in distorted way.
-Violins to create high pitch and fast tempo sound which builds suspense.
Feel:
-Dizzy because of the movement of the camera
-Scared and spooked.

- Both make the audience feel a false sense of security as they are unaware of what is happening.
- Both create narrative enigmas that need to be answered.
- Both introduce the setting in some way.
