Research of OTS
Name of film Your notes-Different things you see, hear and feel from the OTS
Panic Room
See:
- Title comes half way through the title sequence.
- Credits(Directors name, Actors name and Producers name Serif text showing it is serious)
- Credits are floating in the city showing its an extraordinary event in an every day world
- Shows the OTS in a city to set the scene
- Ident from columbia picture
- Very ambient high key lighting to show its set in an everyday world creating versamility
Hear:
- Dark orchestral music
- Deep strings music comes in after the title has been shown
- Towards the end you start to here diegetic sound to reinforce the idea that is set in a city
Feel:
- Based on the dark music and slow continuity editing, it creates a very serious atmosphere showing it is good at setting the genre
Elementary
See:
- Title is at the end of the OTS
- Credits(Producers, Directors and Actors Regular typography)
- Big city.
- Marble following a track
- Warm dark colours. (Black, brown dark red)
- Murder scene
Hear:
- Lots of upbeat strings instruments being played throughout
- As the marble goes further, more instruments come in
Feel:
- When the clip is muted, the audience will feel uneasy as they are seeing a combination of clips that seem to symbolise a violent
atmosphere as they have gun shot, blood, a head being smashed and a toy soldier trapped under a cage
- When you unmute the clip, you get a different feeling as the sound is very upbeat and you feel as if, rather than being violent
symbolism, we are following the progression of the marble and therefore feel good that this system has worked,
Similarities Differences
- Both set in a city
- Both use orchestral instruments
- Both have the credits for directors, producers and big names
- Both show the title in the OTS
- Neither introduce characters
- Both use serif text to create a serious atmosphere
- Both use continuity editing
- Elementary doesn’t have the Production companies Ident.
- Elementary has The title at the end of the film
- Panic room has the credits embedded into the world of the film while Elementary has just has
them layered on top
- Panic room has the title in the middle of the OTS while elementary has it at the end
- Panic room is linear while elementary is more symbolic
- Panic room uses a very ambient high key lighting while Elementary uses low key lights and a
dark colour palette

then feel that they are prepared for what they are about to see.

- Cartoons that are hand drawn to help convey the images behind the making of the film.
