What we learn from researching the
Zombie Genre:
• Lots of foley sounds
• Need to use Mise-en-scene effectively
• Lots of gore
• Often focus's on a small group of people (3-4)
• Weapons (lots of melee weapons, normally blunt e.g. baseball bats/cricket bats)
• Often involves camping, moving on quickly or squatting in a house
• The OTS usually have non-diegetic western music or a voiceover of news reports
• Often link well with comedy
4. 4
Conventions of the Zombie
Subgenre:
• A tight community of protagonists.
• Isolated, abandoned Locations.
• Apocalyptic World (deserted, smoke, dirty, trashed etc.).
• Contrast between slow and fast editing.
• Kinetic Cameras for chase scenes (Tracking and panning shots).
• Shot/Hit in head to kill.
• Lots of high angle shots over a horde of zombies to connote dominance.
• Protagonist is inferior but ends up surviving.
5. 5
Plot/Storyline
We haven't planned a storyline for the symbolic OTS, however our basic idea is to use
different shots to symbolise the spread of the disease. Our ideas include:
•Blow fake blood on a white sheet of paper through a straw
•Flick fake blood off of a paintbrush
•Pour water onto candy floss
•Ink droplet into water
•Cloth absorbing water/ink/fake blood
•Set paper/tissue on fire
•All these shots will have filters to create a dark effect and as it progresses the shots
will cover a larger area to connote the disease taking over.
6. 6
We will create narrative enigmas by
• Using lots of extreme close ups to make the clips mysterious and keep the audience
guessing about what it is.
• Using a voiceover of news story being over run by zombies without stating it is
zombies meaning the audience will wonder what is going on.
• Very Quick flashes between shots so the audience wonders what it was and what
relevance does it have to the story
7. 7
Type of OTS? Why?
• Our first idea is a symbolic title sequence. After reviewing 15 Opening title
sequences we noticed that the majority of them were symbolic and 2 out of the 3
zombie title sequences were symbolic. We also thought it would be interesting to
play with the effects to create a dark atmosphere helping to symbolise a spread of a
disease.
8. 8
What will be your character
types/social groups?
• In this OTS we won't be introducing/exploring characters or character groups.
• We may use clips with people however they will probably be zombies to help clearly
define our subgenre
12. 12
Our USP
• Our OTS will have lots of emphasis on the editing to help portray an apocalyptic
atmosphere through various, unrelated themed shots.
• Our storyline will represent the spread of a disease and therefore our effects will start
off smaller and then gradually getting more dominant.
13. 13
Our target audience:
• Mainly males as it will be quite a violent, gory film.
• Young adults as it will be very lively, jumpy and gory (15-30)
• It will mainly be aimed at a middle classed audience as the film will be set around a
mainstream group of people that some upper classed people might not agree with. It
will also rely on lots of stereotypes which upper classed people may see as cliche
and unoriginal.

17. 17
Plot/Storyline
• 2 guys in camp talking
• (maybe eating breakfast)
• Hear some noise from the bushes (Character 3)
• The 3rd character comes out of the bushes
• Other 2 are relieved
• Character 3 kills zombie from behind the other 2
• Character 3 gives them Food/Resources that he just found/stole
• All 3 talk about moving on/staying
• Start to pack up
18. 18
We will create narrative enigmas by
• Not introduce any of the characters, just use their names.
• Don’t say where Character 3 has got the food from/Where he went.
• Don’t mention their backgrounds or how they met up
19. 19
Type of OTS? Why?
• For this Idea we chose a Linear approach as we felt if we could create a convincing
opening to the story, it would make this a successful OTS as the audience would
want to keep watching. We think that the linear title sequence would be a lot better at
telling a story and we would be able to create lots of narrative enigmas about the
characters and the setting that would be harder to do through a symbolic title
sequence.
20. 20
What will be your character
types/social groups?
• Character 1:
Male, Leader, smart, Caring, reliable, devoted to the group
• Character 2:
Male, Jumpy, afraid, not very practical, fast, quite agile
• Character 3:
Male, Outdoorsy, very skilled survivalist, level headed, isolated/independent
23. 23
Our USP
• We will be showing how relaxed this group of characters are in their new
environment by jumping straight into the middle of the apocalypse.
• We wont introduce the 3rd character until a moment of high tension which will lead to
immediate confusion as they wont know who it is.
24. 24
