Lighting
Low-key lighting is mainly
used for horror films due
to the effects it creates.
The dim tint and
shadows created by this
lighting are suited to the
conventions of a horror
film; it creates tension
due to its mysterious and
dark atmosphere,
controlling how much of
the surroundings are
revealed. It sets the tone,
mood and creates a
dangerous association
with enigma through the
shadows and dull
shades.

-Dramatic, slow, quiet music (it all builds up)
-Screeching as the title appears
-Water, crickets (sunrise)

Buzzing from the
flies in background

intense music
All of these sounds help to signify the horror genre, this is due to
the director purposely choosing parallel sounds so it fits with the
image. For instance, the beginning of the film there is a blank screen
however, birds are tweeting and flies are buzzing which supports the
shot of the sunrise.

The appearance of the first character
presented in the film gives the
impression of how the film is going to
plan out. For example the dark colours
he is shown to be wearing connote
that there will be ominous events
coming up.

6. Mise en sceneSetting:
By having the first gory event take place in the woods, the audience are able to acknowledge
where the rest of the events will take place. In this case, when the man opens up the dog
and blood is squirted into his face. It almost acts as an enigma code as the audience don’t
no who did it? Why there in the woods? Or what’s going to happen throughout the film.
