The opening titles of the film Insidious use techniques like unsettling music, low lighting, and moving objects in the background of each title to draw the audience into the world of the haunted house film. The titles cut between shots of different rooms of a house with strange activity, implying it is haunted. When the last title ends and the music cuts out, the audience knows the film is beginning as it cuts to the protagonist sleeping on a couch in the house. Though few plot details are given, the titles effectively set up the supernatural horror premise and location within the first few minutes.

1) How are you drawn into the world of the film story?
You are drawn intothe worldof the filmstory as withineachtitle showing on
the screen something in the background moves. For example, in one of the
title the chair was moving or there were shadows or the painting was moving
etc, this intrigues the audience. By showing every section of the house, the
audience can tell that the location of the film will be in the house, which the
audience can suggest that the house is haunted. Even more, when the music
is playing, it keeps you in a trance, this draws the audience in on what's
happening with the titles and the background in the titles.
2) How is this developed?
The main techniques that are used to draw the audience into the world of
the film story are the use of music, lighting, the camera shots and the use of
Mise en scene of the haunted house. By using these techniques, this
reinforces the horror genre. The music used in the opening scene/title
sequence are quite harsh/discordant, this fits in really well. Also the use of
low key lighting and the black and white colours used, it shows the
silhouettes of the shadows really well, it clearly indicates that there is
something supernatural inthe haunted house. Moreover, the Mise en scene
(props) of the house and how they move, showing that there may be a dark
presence in the house and it draws the audience attention, which creates
action and enigma codes for them.
3) How do you know that the opening titles are over and the film proper is
starting?
We know whenthe pre-credits (opening scene) are over because it shows the
camera going more up close of the creepy women and then it goes to black
screen. After the title of the film (Insidious) shows up, the music crescendo's
5. as well, whilst the lighting in the background flashes to show more emphasis
on the title and it gives the vibe of the horror genre too. The audience also
knows that the title sequence is about to end as the last title is "Directed By
James Wan" & the discordant music gradually goes quiet, clearly showing
that it is ending and the black screen appears. Then it shows the main
protagonist sleeping on the couch, this is when the audience know that the
film has started.
4) How much of the actual film story do you know from the opening 2-3
minutes?
In the opening scene/title sequence, the audience can detect of what the
narrative will be for this film in particular. From the movement happening in
the background in each title, they can tell that it has to do with a
supernatural presence which ensures that the film is a supernatural horror
film and we can also suggest that the location of film will be in a house
(which is probably haunted by what's happening in each title), as the title
sequence goes through each room of the house, this again states that the
location is in a haunted house, which is quite iconic of the horror genre.
