Imagine living your life without any problems to solve or obstacles to overcome. What if everyone you encounter held the same beliefs and opinions that you do? How would you continue to learn and mature, without the lessons provided through conflict? Because conflict and adversity are nearly unavoidable, the social worker’s focus often is on helping clients resolve and learn from conflict, in order to continue the progress toward their goals. An understanding of the theories about why conflict exists and how it functions in people’s lives provides the foundation from which social workers can best assist clients in coping with and resolving the conflicts they face.

publication that focuses on this subfield of psychology. For purposes of this course, we will focus on the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP), an
organization founded in 1974 when the leadership of the American Psychological Association decided to incorporate an independent organization to focus on
this subfield. Remember, this is an article for potential publication in one of these journals. You are NOT required to submit your completed article to the

Assignment 1: Cultural Competence
As with all areas of the social work process, cultural competence is essential when engaging and assessing a child’s concerns. Being culturally competent includes understanding the unique needs of your client and asking how those needs can be fulfilled. Using an empowerment perspective treating clients as experts on their lives and their needs is essential. Not only does this establish your commitment to being culturally sensitive and aware, but it will enhance the therapeutic relationship. While it is essential to learn and master social work skills and techniques to be a successful practitioner, another significant indicator of a successful intervention is the relationship a social worker builds with his or her client. Some research suggests that the quality of the therapeutic relationship will account for 30% of the clinical outcome of the treatment (Miller, Duncan, and Hubble, 2005, as stated in Walsh, 2010, p. 7). Exhibiting a dedication to learning about a client’s culture, history, and current environmental factors exemplifies a social worker’s desire to build that client–worker bond.

Psychodynamic
theory
and its derivatives can be traced to the father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. You likely are familiar with the image that often conjures Freud: A client lying on a couch with a therapist sitting nearby, notepad in hand. The psychoanalytic terms “id,” “ego,” “superego,” “repression,” and “unconscious” are deeply embedded in the layperson’s jargon.
Many
theories
have sprung from Freud’s psychoanalytical principles. Attachment
theory
is one example. Its originator, John Bowlby, was directly influenced by Freud, but because of Bowlby’s experiences in working with disturbed children, he believed that a child’s psychosocial development is linked to their attachment to the mother. Because all
theories
must be tested using empirical research methods, Mary Ainsworth tested John Bowlby’s theory using the Strange Situation experiment, which involved observing children react to caregivers and strangers. The results from her research led to what we now know as attachment styles.

The final project for this course is the creation of a position paper to illustrate the position of a social advocacy group on a gender-related issue. You will assume
the role of a researcher for a social advocacy group that focuses on issues related to gender. You will assume that your manager has tasked you with writing a
position paper that clearly articulates the group’s stance on a given gender-related issue in an attempt to justify the ultimate goal of the social advocacy group.

Psychodynamic
theory
and its derivatives can be traced to the father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. You likely are familiar with the image that often conjures Freud: A client lying on a couch with a therapist sitting nearby, notepad in hand. The psychoanalytic terms “id,” “ego,” “superego,” “repression,” and “unconscious” are deeply embedded in the layperson’s jargon.
Many
theories
have sprung from Freud’s psychoanalytical principles. Attachment
theory
is one example. Its originator, John Bowlby, was directly influenced by Freud, but because of Bowlby’s experiences in working with disturbed children, he believed that a child’s psychosocial development is linked to their attachment to the mother. Because all
theories
must be tested using empirical research methods, Mary Ainsworth tested John Bowlby’s theory using the Strange Situation experiment, which involved observing children react to caregivers and strangers. The results from her research led to what we now know as attachment styles.

The final project for this course is the creation of a position paper to illustrate the position of a social advocacy group on a gender-related issue. You will assume
the role of a researcher for a social advocacy group that focuses on issues related to gender. You will assume that your manager has tasked you with writing a
position paper that clearly articulates the group’s stance on a given gender-related issue in an attempt to justify the ultimate goal of the social advocacy group.
You will select an issue from the options provided or submit your own issue for instructor approval. You will then analyze the issue through the incorporation of

You are encouraged to choose your own topic to address in the position paper and will be guided through this process in the early modules of the course. Some

Week 2: Ethical Relativism
Ethical Relativism is the claim that moral views are relative to the culture in which one lives or to the individual (also called Subjectivism). Many people declare themselves to be ethical relativists, but very few actually believe it to be true in practice. Often people are simply trying to avoid getting into an argument when they say that their ethical positions are just opinions. If it was true that you should avoid arguments about ethical issues, you would have to believe that there are good moral or possibly prudential reasons for not getting into arguments with others, that it was good for everyone to avoid conflict about controversial issues, which means that it is simply correct to be tolerant, making you opposed to relativism. Since you would be claiming that tolerance is a virtue that everyone should accept. In other cases, you may be concerned with ethnocentrism, the practice of imposing your views on others. But then, you would have to believe that being ethnocentric is morally wrong and that there are good moral reasons for not being ethnocentric. All of the people in the class took tolerance to be a moral virtue, some claiming that it is a result of cultural relativism. But you can’t derive a universal value from cultural relativism.
