cacy program could be developed within a human services agency. Pro-
gressive advocacy is defined as advocacy motivated primarily by a desire
for social change that addresses underlying structural and power inequi-
ties that includes methods to meaningfully engage agency clients or con-
stituents in all aspects ofthe advocacy process. The paper concludes with
a case study showing the development of an advocacy program within a
nonprofit homeless services agency and discusses the constraints on its

Are Social Work Advocacy Groups Using Web 2.0 Effectively?

This article describes social work advocacy efforts, states what Web 2.0 technology has to offer social work advocacy, and presents original research on the current levels of Web 2.0 use on social work advocacy organization Web sites. This study employed a content analysis of a purposive sample of social work advocacy organization Web sites (N = 63). The researchers created a data collection instrument containing items related to communicating with policy makers, resource gathering, information, and use of specific Web 2.0 technologies. Findings reveal that social work organizations make good use of their Web sites for some advocacy activities, and grossly underutilize the Web forum for others. Furthermore, social work organizations do not use Web 2.0 often for advocacy. Barriers impeding Web 2.0 use and methods to overcome such barriers are also discussed. Implications for future social work education, practice, and research follow.

The Code of Ethics for the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) states that social workers “pursue social change” and “challenge injustice” (NASW, 2008). Advocacy aimed at informing the policy process serves as a key method that social workers use to fulfill this mission (Hoefer, 2006; Jackson-Elmoore, 2005). Social work advocates must take advantage of every advocacy tactic available to the greatest extent possible to ensure timely policy change for vulnerable populations.

Advocacy tactics have been divided into “inside” and “outside” (Hoefer, 2001, 2005; Walker, 1993). Inside tactics are those that groups use to work directly with decision makers, such as lobbying. Outside tactics are employed by interest group members or the public to put pressure on decision makers. The Internet, as originally designed (Web 1.0), has been effectively used as an outside tactic to disseminate information from interest group leaders to decision makers and members of the public. Thus, the Web is a tool advocates can use to keep their message available at all times. In recent years, the Internet has moved from being a one-way highway to a more interactive entity, called Web 2.0. This second generation of Web site tools expands human services organizations’ advocacy efforts well beyond information dissemination. Through social media applications such as blogs, wikis, podcasts, videocasts, social networking, etc., human service organizations can promote information sharing, participatory knowledge generation, and collaboration building (Fine, 2007; McNutt, 2008; McNutt & Menon, 2008; Sche.

produced just shortly after color television was invented, then you are familiar with the notion of law
enforcement having partners. This concept of law enforcement having partners that work with them to
investigate crimes, help citizens, and engage in other social activities is embedded in the history of law
enforcement. Thus, it should be no surprise that when we talk about community policing, it is necessary for
partnerships to be established between various community entities to ensure that the entire community is
protected and served by law enforcement.
In communities, partnerships take on many forms. They can be between two individuals, an organization and
individual, multiple individuals, multiple agencies, or multiple individuals and agencies. The term collaboration
is often used to represent the coming together of various agencies and individuals that are working together
to achieve a common goal. In addition to working together, these agencies and individuals pool their
resources together to help achieve the goal. In order for collaboration to be successful, trust between the
individuals and agencies involved must be at the core of that collaboration process. Once trust is at the core,
that trust must then be surrounded by the following components to ensure a successful collaboration results:
key stakeholders, shared visions and common goals, expertise, teamwork strategies, open communication,
motivated partners, sufficient means (resources), and an action plan (Miller, Hess, & Orthmann, 2014).
It is imperative that law enforcement agencies make time for the development of partnerships and problem-

The need for policy changes can arise for a variety of reasons. Some of those reasons might include social injustice, inequality, increased health concerns, and research discoveries in a multitude of environmental, social, health, and technological areas. Changing policies is an often-tough political battle because so many people can be affected by policy change.
For this Application Assignment, review the virtual community and think about your role as the

This article describes social work advocacy efforts, states what Web
2.0 technology has to offer social work advocacy, and presents origi-
nal research on the current levels of Web 2.0 use on social work
advocacy organization Web sites. This study employed a content
analysis of a purposive sample of social work advocacy organization
Web sites (N = 63). The researchers created a data collection instru-
ment containing items related to communicating with policy mak-
ers, resource gathering, information, and use of specific Web 2.0
technologies. Findings reveal that social work organizations make
good use of their Web sites for some advocacy activities, and grossly
underutilize the Web forum for others. Furthermore, social work
organizations do not use Web 2.0 often for advocacy. Barriers
impeding Web 2.0 use and methods to overcome such barriers are
also discussed. Implications for future social work education, prac-
tice, and research follow.

The Code of Ethics for the National Association of Social Workers (NASW)
states that social workers “pursue social change” and “challenge injustice”
(NASW, 2008). Advocacy aimed at informing the policy process serves as a
key method that social workers use to fulfill this mission (Hoefer, 2006;
Jackson-Elmoore, 2005). Social work advocates must take advantage of
every advocacy tactic available to the greatest extent possible to ensure
timely policy change for vulnerable populations.

Advocacy tactics have been divided into “inside” and “outside” (Hoefer,
2001, 2005; Walker, 1993). Inside tactics are those that groups use to work
directly with decision makers, such as lobbying. Outside tactics are
employed by interest group members or the public to put pressure on deci-
sion makers. The Internet, as originally designed (Web 1.0), has been effec-
tively used as an outside tactic to disseminate information from interest
group leaders to decision makers and members of the public. Thus, the
Web is a tool advocates can use to keep their message available at all times.

As a State Correctional employee, we often use evaluations to analyze in-service training, policy reviews, programs and services, etc. It may seem as if we are over evaluating; however, this helps to ensure our services are effective.
Westat (2010) says the two reasons program evaluation exists, as written for the National Science Foundation, is to “improve a project” and “document what has been achieved” (p. 3).
The most consistent with my interest is program improvement. For instance, we had four different in-service courses with the same course information. An evaluation was passed out to the students at the end of the course to provide their opinion of the course. The comments prompted the instructors to redesign four courses into one. Evaluations are essential tool in Corrections because it allows us to
document our achievements, which will result in data to support our reentry programs.

In my work with community corrections, I have not conducted any type of program evaluation; however, I understand program evaluation is designed to answer some key questions about a program’s effectiveness to the stakeholders (community, participants and staff). The overarching idea behind program evaluation is to ascertain if those who should benefit from the program are actually benefiting and if those performing the services to the community are skilled at providing the services. Another important aspect of program evaluation is to determine whether the allocated resources for the services are sufficient for addressing the needs of the population (The Program Manager’s Guide to Evaluation, 2010).
In looking at this week’s resources, Langbein (2012) identifies some distinct differences between program and project (p.3). A program is described as “ongoing services or activities” (Langbein, 2012, p. 3) while projects are intended to be one-time activities that has long-lasting sustainable impact on communities (p. 3). Thus, program evaluations should help determine the extent of a program’s success or lack thereof (what works and what does not work) as well as provide insight on navigating areas where unexpected circumstances occur (Westat, 2010). In short, program evaluations provide managers and administrators the data needed to prove or disprove the value of a program which ultimately impac.

The ever present threat of violence and fear perpetrated on individuals and properties is among the concern when regarding public safety and the ability to enjoy freedoms and rights. This is because of the manner they threaten the safety, good governance and the peaceful environment expected in a community. This as such becomes the role of the police to ensure that such occurrences and individuals are kept in check through the use of laws and regulations which end up in provision of security and sustainability. In this aspect, they tend to interact and have relations regarding how they conduct their duties and maintain order. This forms the basic essence of public relations as it seeks to determine how individuals perceive and communicate among each other. There is a need for them to act under the law, and this is set to ensure that they earn respect among the public and create good public relations with the general public.
This is also considering the high number of cases that have been highlighted by the media, which is at the forefront of highlighting information, and current events which have not played well in the light of the public. The relationship has become strenuous with the police losing trust and belief in certain communities. This is the essence of this discussion, which is the relationship between a police and public relations. Public relations goes hand in hand with services that are meant to benefit the general public.
It is because of the public interest by every individual to feel safe under law enforcement. Police relations enable the administration of norms and rules established as they affect both the community at large and the police also (Barker & Hunter, 2011). Proper public relations allow for the ease of policing and administration of justice. As such, it is important to highlight the importance of public relations for the police and community and whether there can be more proactive methods to improve and increase for better relations far from the negative perspective held now.

At the age of nine, Anita moved from a small town to a big city because her father was transferred to a new job. This article describes social work advocacy efforts, states what Web
2.0 technology has to offer social work advocacy, and presents origi-
nal research on the current levels of Web 2.0 use on social work
advocacy organization Web sites. This study employed a content
analysis of a purposive sample of social work advocacy organization
Web sites (N = 63). The researchers created a data collection instru-
ment containing items related to communicating with policy mak-
ers, resource gathering, information, and use of specific Web 2.0
technologies. Findings reveal that social work organizations make
good use of their Web sites for some advocacy activities, and grossly
underutilize the Web forum for others. Furthermore, social work
organizations do not use Web 2.0 often for advocacy. Barriers
impeding Web 2.0 use and methods to overcome such barriers are
also discussed. Implications for future social work education, prac-
tice, and research follow.

The Code of Ethics for the National Association of Social Workers (NASW)
states that social workers “pursue social change” and “challenge injustice”
(NASW, 2008). Advocacy aimed at informing the policy process serves as a
key method that social workers use to fulfill this mission (Hoefer, 2006;
Jackson-Elmoore, 2005). Social work advocates must take advantage of
every advocacy tactic available to the greatest extent possible to ensure
timely policy change for vulnerable populations.

Advocacy tactics have been divided into “inside” and “outside” (Hoefer,
2001, 2005; Walker, 1993). Inside tactics are those that groups use to work
directly with decision makers, such as lobbying. Outside tactics are
employed by interest group members or the public to put pressure on deci-
sion makers. The Internet, as originally designed (Web 1.0), has been effec-
tively used as an outside tactic to disseminate information from interest
group leaders to decision makers and members of the public. Thus, the
Web is a tool advocates can use to keep their message available at all times.

As a State Correctional employee, we often use evaluations to analyze in-service training, policy reviews, programs and services, etc. It may seem as if we are over evaluating; however, this helps to ensure our services are effective.
Westat (2010) says the two reasons program evaluation exists, as written for the National Science Foundation, is to “improve a project” and “document what has been achieved” (p. 3).
The most consistent with my interest is program improvement. For instance, we had four different in-service courses with the same course information. An evaluation was passed out to the students at the end of the course to provide their opinion of the course. The comments prompted the instructors to redesign four courses into one. Evaluations are essential tool in Corrections because it allows us to
document our achievements, which will result in data to support our reentry programs.

In my work with community corrections, I have not conducted any type of program evaluation; however, I understand program evaluation is designed to answer some key questions about a program’s effectiveness to the stakeholders (community, participants and staff). The overarching idea behind program evaluation is to ascertain if those who should benefit from the program are actually benefiting and if those performing the services to the community are skilled at providing the services. Another important aspect of program evaluation is to determine whether the allocated resources for the services are sufficient for addressing the needs of the population (The Program Manager’s Guide to Evaluation, 2010).
In looking at this week’s resources, Langbein (2012) identifies some distinct differences between program and project (p.3). A program is described as “ongoing services or activities” (Langbein, 2012, p. 3) while projects are intended to be one-time activities that has long-lasting sustainable impact on communities (p. 3). Thus, program evaluations should help determine the extent of a program’s success or lack thereof (what works and what does not work) as well as provide insight on navigating areas where unexpected circumstances occur (Westat, 2010). In short, program evaluations provide managers and administrators the data needed to prove or disprove the value of a program which ultimately impac.

This as such becomes the role of the police to ensure that such occurrences and individuals are kept in check through the use of laws and regulations which end up in provision of security and sustainability. In this aspect, they tend to interact and have relations regarding how they conduct their duties and maintain order. This forms the basic essence of public relations as it seeks to determine how individuals perceive and communicate among each other. There is a need for them to act under the law, and this is set to ensure that they earn respect among the public and create good public relations with the general public.
This is also considering the high number of cases that have been highlighted by the media, which is at the forefront of highlighting information, and current events which have not played well in the light of the public. The relationship has become strenuous with the police losing trust and belief in certain communities. This is the essence of this discussion, which is the relationship between a police and public relations. Public relations goes hand in hand with services that are meant to benefit the general public.
It is because of the public interest by every individual to feel safe under law enforcement. Police relations enable the administration of norms and rules established as they affect both the community at large and the police also (Barker & Hunter, 2011). Proper public relations allow for the ease of policing and administration of justice. As such, it is important to highlight the importance of public relations for the police and community and whether there can be more proactive methods to improve and increase for better relations far from the negative perspective held now.

At the age of nine, Anita moved from a small town to a big city because her father was transferred to a new job. When Juanita visited with Melissa, the previous HR manager, she felt Melissa was a bit evasive on issues like hiring, firing, and retaining employees and volunteers. It is Day 6 since her hire start date and already she has received two notices of resignation from key personnel. She was hoping that she could analyze the situation before trying to implement solutions. But, Rich, her boss, is applying a lot of pressure because his boss seems to be applying pressure on him.
Although she did not know the two people very well, she did conduct exit interviews. Much of what she was told fit with what she sensed about training and development, compensation, recognition, and career development. Both individuals seemed genuinely committed to the mission of the organization, but expressed frustration with people they work with due to their incompetence and also with the organization, due to its unwillingness to invest in its employees.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
