1) Temple-Inland Forest Products Corporation is a leading producer of wood products like particleboard, MDF, and gypsum wallboard. They are interested in applying non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques to improve quality assurance and process control. 2) Currently they use some NDE methods like ultrasonic blow detectors, laser thickness gauges, and near-infrared moisture sensors for limited in-process monitoring. However, they still rely on offline destructive testing for quality control. 3) Air-coupled ultrasound shows promise as a method for quantitative online measurement of mechanical properties like internal bond strength, which could enable improved process optimization and reduced production costs.
