A corporation’s information system can be a strength or a weakness in
all elements of strategic management. It can not only aid in
environmental scanning and in controlling a company’s many
activities, it can also be used as a strategic weapon ingaining
competitive advantage. For example, Asian Paints imited (APL),
developed a home solution system that directly linked the majority of
its customers to APL computers. The system was successful because it
simplified choice of colours for customers, reduced costs for both APL
and the customer, and allowed APL to provide pricing incentives to the
customer. As a result, customer loyalty was high and APL share of the
decorative paints segment of the market is high.
A current trend in corporate information systems is the increasing use of the
intranet for marketing, intranets for internal communication. An intranet is an
information network within an organisation that also has access to the external
worldwide internet. Intranets typically begin as ways to provide employees with
company information such as lists of product prices, fringe benefits and company
policies. They are then converted into extranets for supply chain management. An
extranet is an information network within an organisation that is available to key
suppliers and customers. The key issue in building an extranet is the creation of
“fire walls” to block extranet users from accessing the firm’s or other users’
confidential data. Once this accomplished , companies can allow employees ,
customers and suppliers to access information and conduct business on the
internet in a completely automated manner. By connecting these groups,
companies hope to obtain a competitive advantage by reducing the time needed to
design and bring new products to market , slashing inventories, customizing
manufacturing and entering new markets.

Consolidated Results: Q1-FY’2016: For the quarter ended June 30, 2015, on consolidation of
accounts of the subsidiaries and joint ventures of Asian Paints – Income from Operations increased
by 7.8 % to ` 3623.5 crores from ` 3362.3 crores. PBDIT (before exceptional item) for the quarter
increased by 24 % to ` 683.5 crores as compared to ` 551.4 crores of the previous year. Net Profit
after Minority Interest for the quarter increased by 34.4 % to ` 455.2 crores from ` 338.7 crores.
Standalone Results: Q1-FY’2016: For the quarter ended June 30, 2015, Income from Operations
has increased by 7.2 % to ` 2938.2 crores from ` 2740.8 crores. PBDIT (before exceptional item)
for the quarter increased by 25.1 % to ` 605.9 crores from ` 484.5 crores. Net Profit for the quarter
increased by 38.5 % to ` 427.8 crores from ` 308.8 crores.
Asian Paints Consolidated Net Profit for the Quarter up by 34.4%
