Main genre- Comedy.
 Sub Genres-
Slapstick; slapstick is a type of sub genre in which it is performed in silence,
this was beneficial for non English speakers and there was no dialogue they
had to follow. although they did often use narration in text. charlie chaplin

 Deadpan; (dry humour) Deadpan is a type of comedy in which the
performers do not change their expression or emotion throughout, the
stay neutral or just one emotion to create an atmosphere that goes
against the certain context of the script. dry humour magician

 Verbal Comedy; This is a type of comedy where they use cruel verbal wit
(W.C Fields). Sexual Innuendo (Mae West) and Verbal Absurdity (Marx
Brothers)
 Screwball Comedy; this is a sub genre of Romantic Comedy and was
often used in the mid 1930's - mid 1940's. 'Screwball' means lunacy or
craziness and often contains erratic behaviour. It had a combination of
slapstick and witty dialogue. It was normally quite light hearted and
describes as frothy. Mostly about a sophisticated romance story focused
on the battle of the sexes.

We know that certain types of entertainment are Slapstick comedy
by the elements it consists of.
SLAPSTICK
For example-
 Silent
 Exaggerated
 commedia dell'arte
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpjEyBKSfJQ
Charlie Chaplin uses silence to create the humour.
The fact it is silent allows us to put our own voices and sounds into this,
making it funny for everyone is different way. The certain codes and conventions of slapstick comedy
is that it is very over the top, with exaggerated facial expressions. Sometimes music is played over the top to
Make the audience feel more rushed at it was mainly fast paced music. This also creates more of an
exhilarating feeling while watching it.
NICK LACEY
 Setting- Nick Lacey thinks it is very important to make
sure the setting is in the right geographical place for
the genre. If not the scene or whole film would feel out
of place. For example, because slapstick is very
comical, it would be set in places like a zoo, or shops
as it is easier to make comedy in silence with the
certain props they’ll have.
NICK LACEY
 Characterisation- if we had a slapstick comedy show, and
someone like Zac Efron playing the part, it would also feel out of
place because he doesn’t fit the role. This is why Charlie Chaplin
plays in most popular slapstick comedy. This is because he wears
the makeup, and the suit, and is capable of acting in the
commedia dell'arte fashion. It would also be hard to do a
slapstick comedy in a 21st century city as it is now known for its
glamour and slapstick is anything but.
NICK LACEY
 STORY- Lacey also adds that the story of the genre fits the type it
is. This makes sense as most slapstick genre have silly stories.
However romantic comedies would be about a man and
women, ending up together.
NICK LACEY
 Mise-En-scene- Slapstick comedy wouldn’t be such without pie
fights, or any type of funny accidently violence. This is why Lacey
says that this is a very important aspect of media. Without these
certain additions bringing it all together, nothing would feel right.
