Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

3. Technologies- Pictures
I have used many types of technologies
to get my magazine looking the best it
possibly could. I used an SLR camera to
get better looking photos so I wouldn't
have to edit them that much. I've
learnt how to get the pictures from my
memory stick to the Mac, ( I no it
sounds a bit stupid, but i'd never used
a Mac before).
4. Mac
Which is the next thing i've
learnt... how to use a Mac. They are
not that hard to use and now feel
more confident using them. I created
my magazine on Publisher. I used this
program as i have used it before and
felt more comfortable. However, i did
learn some things as there is a new
edition of the program out which
contains more features.
5. Internet Programmes
I also used Serif's Photo Plus program to
do some editing. Not much editing was done
as i had used a decent camera. I used the
internet as a source for my information,
which is another technology i have used. I
have used Blogger for the first time, so
Iv'e learnt a lot on how to use and work
it and that the files have to be in JPEG
format otherwise they won't upload!
Overall, because i had not used Blogger
before this was the technology that i
found the hardest until i got to grips
with it.
