No Clarity-
Beyond the immediate aim of destructive acts, the long-term goals of terrorists are likely to be poorly conceived or impossible to implement. Terrorism that succeeds escalates.
The last seven slides of the Module 7 Power Point presentation depicted the following case studies of actual terrorist or extremist type events. Select one of these case studies, do further research on it and complete a 2-page essay discussing the application of these six characteristics in the event you select. In addition, the student will state if the chosen event was a Domestic or International event and why it is so.
Students must include a minimum of two references, one being from an outside, non-GU source.

What PM Netanyahu was saying is terrorist use their tactics, which are unorthodox, brutal and inhumane, against a force they couldn't otherwise defeat, in an attempt to break the spirit of those they oppose. Many say the 9/11 attacks against America have played into the hands of those who attacked us. They (terrorists) want to cause fear within the population. According to this week's presentation, the result of this fear is that "[I]n times of perceived severe threats, people will often trade their freedom for even the illusion of safety."

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has taken the broad spectrum of terrorism and divided the types into two areas: domestic terrorism and international terrorism. The definitions for both areas are rather broad in scope. According to Watson, domestic terrorism is defined by the FBI as “the unlawful use, or threatened use, of violence by a group or individual based and operating entirely within the United States (or its territories) without foreign direction” (para. 8). Additionally, the FBI uses the definition of “violent acts or acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or any state, or that would be a criminal violation if committed within the jurisdiction of the United States or any state. Acts are intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policy of a government, or affect the conduct of a government” (para. 9) for their international terrorism category.
Both domestic and international terrorism is rooted in extremist and their ideals and the use of tactics that promote terror to further their agenda. According to Martin (2019), the typical objectives for terrorism are to change the existing order, social disruption, psychological disruption, and creating a revolutionary environment (pp. 10-11).
Eric Rudolph was responsible for the July 27, 1996 bombing during the XXVI Summer Olympiad in Atlanta when he used a nail-laden pipe bomb in Centennial Olympic Park that killed a woman who had driven with her daughter to Atlanta to celebrate the Olympics, and injured over 100 others (History, 2010, para. 1). According to the FBI, the motives behind Rudolph’s attack included his anti-government, anti-gay, and other biases (para. 12).

An 18-year-old high school student walks to class carrying a backpack. He is stopped by the school security guard and his backpack is searched. A loaded handgun is discovered. The school security guard takes the student to the principal’s office. The principal calls the local police. In the state where the school is located, it is illegal to carry a concealed weapon without a permit and all weapons are prohibited on campus.
Officer Smith arrives at the school approximately 10 minutes later. Officer Smith takes a statement from the school security guard and searches the student’s backpack. He seizes the gun and places the student under arrest. Officer Smith then asks the student if he would like to make a statement to explain why he was carrying a concealed weapon on campus.
The student replies, “What weapon? That’s not my backpack and I never saw that gun before.”
The student is then transported to the local jail. However, on the way to the local jail, Officer Smith asks the student again why he brought a loaded gun on campus. The student admits that it was his gun and stated that he needed it for protection. Upon arrival at the local jail, the student is booked. Six hours later, the student is interviewed by a Detective Columbo. The detective reads the student his Miranda warning and asks the student if he would like to make a statement.
The student replies, “No, I want a lawyer.”
Write a 1–2 page paper in which you:
1. Examine the constitutional amendment or amendments that would relate to this situation.
2. Outline the appropriate procedures you would need to follow to comply with the associated amendments to ensure admissibility of evidence.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has taken the broad spectrum of terrorism and divided the types into two areas: domestic terrorism and international terrorism. The definitions for both areas are rather broad in scope. According to Watson, domestic terrorism is defined by the FBI as “the unlawful use, or threatened use, of violence by a group or individual based and operating entirely within the United States (or its territories) without foreign direction” (para. 8). Additionally, the FBI uses the definition of “violent acts or acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or any state, or that would be a criminal violation if committed within the jurisdiction of the United States or any state. Acts are intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policy of a government, or affect the conduct of a government” (para. 9) for their international terrorism category.
Both domestic and international terrorism is rooted in extremist and their ideals and the use of tactics that promote terror to further their agenda. According to Martin (2019), the typical objectives for terrorism are to change the existing order, social disruption, psychological disruption, and creating a revolutionary environment (pp. 10-11).
Eric Rudolph was responsible for the July 27, 1996 bombing during the XXVI Summer Olympiad in Atlanta when he used a nail-laden pipe bomb in Centennial Olympic Park that killed a woman who had driven with her daughter to Atlanta to celebrate the Olympics, and injured over 100 others (History, 2010, para. 1). According to the FBI, the motives behind Rudolph’s attack included his anti-government, anti-gay, and other biases (para. 12).

The school security guard takes the student to the principal’s office. The principal calls the local police. In the state where the school is located, it is illegal to carry a concealed weapon without a permit and all weapons are prohibited on campus.
Officer Smith arrives at the school approximately 10 minutes later. Officer Smith takes a statement from the school security guard and searches the student’s backpack. He seizes the gun and places the student under arrest. Officer Smith then asks the student if he would like to make a statement to explain why he was carrying a concealed weapon on campus.
The student replies, “What weapon? That’s not my backpack and I never saw that gun before.”
The student is then transported to the local jail. However, on the way to the local jail, Officer Smith asks the student again why he brought a loaded gun on campus. The student admits that it was his gun and stated that he needed it for protection. Upon arrival at the local jail, the student is booked. Six hours later, the student is interviewed by a Detective Columbo. The detective reads the student his Miranda warning and asks the student if he would like to make a statement.
The student replies, “No, I want a lawyer.”
Write a 1–2 page paper in which you:
1. Examine the constitutional amendment or amendments that would relate to this situation.
2. Outline the appropriate procedures you would need to follow to comply with the associated amendments to ensure admissibility of evidence.

This means the day-to-day leadership—the people who call the meetings, set the goals, work until midnight. Successful change is more likely if leadership is high level, has “ownership” (that is, direct responsibility for what’s to be changed), and has clear business results in mind. Low-level leadership, or leadership that is not well-connected throughout the organization (across departments) or that comes from the staff, is less likely to succeed and should be scored low.

High points for a strong sense of urgency from senior management, which is shared by the rest of the company, and for a corporate culture that already emphasizes continuous improvement. Negative: tradition-bound managers and workers, many of whom have been in their jobs for more than 15 years; a conservative culture that discourages risk taking.

Teenagers face extremely complicated social and emotional issues. The issues are inescapable, but most teens are not prepared to rationally handle them. Because they are ill prepared, the need for effective and honest communication between teens and their parents is more vital than ever. Parent's wisdom, accumulated by their experience and study, can guide their children to the best decision. This pressing need for communication is being undermined however, by the extension of individual rights to minors.
A troubling example of minor's rights taken much too far is the federal law that permits minors to obtain an abortion without parental consent. The reasoning behind such a law is that a girl will be less likely to get the abortion she wants if she must disclose her intentions to her parents. What these supporters fail to consider is that just because a minor wants to get an abortion does not mean she should get one. Think about it. Would you want your daughter to make an impulsive decision about such an important matter? This law needs to be changed before more teenagers' lives are destroyed.
Compare the situation with that of a young child who is terribly distraught over a particular bully's constant taunting. The child may want to retort with nasty remarks or a physical fight. Only after consulting with a parent will the child realize that a confrontation yields more aggravation and possible physical harm.
Similarly, a girl who discovers she is pregnant will be overcome with emotions — regret, confusion, guilt, disappointment, and fear. With these emotions weighing upon her, she is likely to act unthinkingly. She needs the mature and rationale guidance a parent can provide to avoid making an impulsive decision.
Supporters also argue that involuntary parental consent will only damage the parent/child relationship by escalating conflict and stress. Just the opposite is the case, however. Parental consent requirements prevent disastrous scenes that will inevitably occur if parents discover their daughter has had an abortion without their consent.
Of course, some tensions may arise when the daughter reveals her pregnancy, but this initial tension is a small price to pay for an open and honest relationship. Statutes that allow abortions to be administered without parental consent prevent girls from seeking the advice of the people who care so much for them.
These anti-parental-consent laws developed out of a legitimate concern for a minor's rights, but what about the rights of the parents? Law requires parental consent when a minor is to undergo any medical procedure. A minor can be refused medical attention until one parent consents, except in emergency situations. This law even applies to a minor's wish to get their ears pierced! In such cases, the law recognizes the parents' right to know the state of their child's well being. It is a denial of this right, therefore, to permit minors to und.

The final assignment for this course is a Final Paper. The purpose of the Final Paper is to give you an opportunity to apply much of what you have learned about American national government to an examination of civil liberties in the context of the war on terror. The Final Paper represents 20% of the overall course grade.
Soon after the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, the Bush administration developed a plan for holding and interrogating captured prisoners. They were sent to a prison inside a U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, on land leased from the government of Cuba. Since 2002, over 700 men have been detained at Gitmo. Most have been released without charges or turned over to other governments. In 2011, Congress specifically prohibited the expenditure of funds to transfer Gitmo prisoners to detention facilities in the continental United States, making it virtually impossible to try them in civilian courts. As of April 2012, 169 remained in detention at Gitmo (Sutton, 2012).
An assumption made by the Bush administration in selecting this location was that it was beyond the jurisdiction of U.S. courts. The administration wanted to avoid any judicial oversight of how it handled detainees, characterized as enemy combatants. A possible legal challenge to indefinite detention with no formal charges or judicial proceedings might arise from the habeas corpus provision of the Constitution.
Article I, Section 9 of the Constitution states, "The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it." Under this provision, persons detained by the government are entitled to a judicial hearing to determine if there is any legal basis for their detention. Some legal commentators refer to the right of habeas corpus as the "great writ of liberty" because it is a prisoner's ultimate recourse to an impartial judge who can review the possibility that he is being held illegally by the executive (e.g., the police or the military). In nations that do not honor habeas corpus, people simply disappear into prisons without ever having their day in court.
Several controversial Supreme Court cases have come out of Gitmo. One fundamental question that has been debated, but not clearly resolved, is to what extent the war on terror justifies the President's indefinite detention of enemy combatants without the possibility of the minimal judicial review protected by habeas corpus? Another issue in the debate is to what extent Congress must clearly authorize the President to conduct extra-judicial detentions in order for them to be legal? In 2008, the Supreme Court’s decision in
Boumediene v. Bush
offered some answers to these questions. However, the deeply divided 5-4 Court and the likelihood of the protracted nature of the war on terror suggest that debate around these important quest.

As described in the Module 7 Power Point presentation, criminologist Gwynn Nettler outlined all terrorism shares six characteristics: No Rules- No moral limitations on the type or degree of violence that terrorists can use. No Innocents- No respecter of persons; from soldiers to children; all are game. Economy- Kill one, frighten 10,000 Publicity- Terrorists seek publicity, and publicity encourages terrorism. Meaning- Terrorist acts give meaning and significance to the lives of terrorists. No Clarity- Beyond the immediate aim of destructive acts, the long-term goals of terrorists are likely to be poorly conceived or impossible to implement. Terrorism that succeeds escalates. The last seven slides of the Module 7 Power Point presentation depicted the following case studies of actual terrorist or extremist type events. Select one of these case studies, do further research on it and complete a 2-page essay discussing the application of these six characteristics in the event you select. In addition, the student will state if the chosen event was a Domestic or International event and why it is so. Students must include a minimum of two references, one being from an outside, non-GU source. Please be very sensitive to the issues of plagiarism! All of the written work submitted must clearly be your own. Keep in mind transcription of material (copying), followed by parenthetical identification of the source with little or no original thought added does not constitute an adequate essay. You are expected to provide some evidence that at least a significant portion of the each essay is your own reaction to, thought about or
