The Danish Architecture Centre and Arup present a series of exclusive Talks
focusing on the possibilities and challenges of international engineering design.
Arup is known as a pioneer within environmental and structural engineering. With 10,000 employ-

Mark Watts will set out a vision of what successful, sustainable cities of the future will look like, and what
they have to achieve over the next two decades to get there. The Talk will be based upon Arup’s work for and
analysis of the low carbon programmes being planned or delivered in the world’s largest and most influential cit-
ies, from New York and London, to Beijing, Sao Paulo and Addis Ababa.

With the emergence of innovative architectural concepts aiming for a more efficient and sustainable built
environment the focus in materialization is shifting towards a syntheses of aesthetic, functional and structural
aspects. More than ever the discipline of architectural engineering and the skills of the integrator have become
essential to steer true innovation in multidisciplinary projects. The Talk will present Arup’s research in the field
of building technology and present selected projects in detail.

The Talk covers the story of the design of the CCTV project in Beijing from competition days in Europe to
the realities on the ground in Beijing, in the time of the build up to the Olympics and beyond. With 8 years of
experience working and living in Beijing Rory McGowan will also make some remarks on the realities on the
ground and a view on the future of European design in China and East Asia.
Moderator: Henning Thomsen, architect MAA, has worked for several years with development and
communication of new knowledge about cities, sustainability and urban development. Henning is
a member of the World Future Councils Expert Commission on Cities and Climate Change.
