PROJECT URBAN PROTOTYPING
International Workshop III Planning and Design Process
Date: Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 January 2012
Venue: National University Singapore (NUS), School of Design and
Environment (SDE), Seminar Room at the Centre for Sustainable
Asian Cities (CSAC) - SDE1 / 4th floor
Time: 09:00-17:00
Synopsis
The Project Urban Prototyping is intended as a preparatory exploration to develop the proposal
for the establishment of the Laboratory for Urban Prototyping. The project will explore the
possibilities to establish a collaborative environment for design, planning and management of
climate smart urban areas by the application of advanced virtual prototyping technologies.
The exploratory study Urban Prototyping acknowledges the following approaches:
I Exploration of the state-of-the-art
II Identification of the user needs, and conceptualization of the basic architecture, for an
urban prototyping system
III Strategic partnerships
IV Qualified proposal for the next step: Laboratory for Urban Prototyping
In the first stage, indicated as Exploration of the state-of-the-art, the study envisions external
workshops with international experts:
Workshop I Virtual Prototyping
Workshop II Collaborative Planning and Design
Workshop III Planning and Design Process
Workshop III Planning and Design Process is dedicated to the planning and design process and
to the different public and private institutions that are involved in it. Experts and
representatives from different public authorities in Singapore are invited, who are involved in
planning and development of the built environment.
Main research question of Workshop III Planning and Design Process: What are the specific
conditions and demands of urban planning and design for the application of Virtual
Prototyping?

Akkelies van Nes
Akkelies van Nes has been coordinating several research projects dealing with urban centrality, mobility,
street life and urban safety where the space syntax method has been used. She was the chair woman for
the 5th International Space Syntax Symposium in 2005. She is member of the international space syntax
steering committee. In addition, she is involved in the knowledge management work package of the
European 7th framework project RUFUS (Rural Future Networks). Besides, she developed her micro
scale analyses tools in order to identify and analyse the spatial conditions for crime dispersal in urban
areas. Together with the firm RCM-Advies (Result Crime Management) she did a pilot study on the
relationship between space and crime in Alkmaar and Gouda funded by the Dutch Police and Science
office. Currently, she is working together with the archaeologists from Leiden University with the
application of space syntax on excavated sites, and doing space syntax consultancy of various urban
planning projects.

Project Urban Prototyping - Workshop III Planning and Design Processes January 2012 Page 4 International key note speakers Akkelies van Nes Akkelies van Nes has been coordinating several research projects dealing with urban centrality, mobility, street life and urban safety where the space syntax method has been used. She was the chair woman for the 5th International Space Syntax Symposium in 2005. She is member of the international space syntax steering committee. In addition, she is involved in the knowledge management work package of the European 7th framework project RUFUS (Rural Future Networks). Besides, she developed her micro scale analyses tools in order to identify and analyse the spatial conditions for crime dispersal in urban areas. Together with the firm RCM-Advies (Result Crime Management) she did a pilot study on the relationship between space and crime in Alkmaar and Gouda funded by the Dutch Police and Science office. Currently, she is working together with the archaeologists from Leiden University with the application of space syntax on excavated sites, and doing space syntax consultancy of various urban planning projects. He is also part of a regional software development team with skills across CAD/BIM, engineering, document and project management, mobile devices, database and web development. Steve’s specialty is developing tools for data interoperability between CAD/BIM and engineering software, and he is continuing this work through the publically available ‘DesignLink’ project. Steve has had various roles at Arup including: working as a Structural Draftsman, being part of the I.T. team and developing bespoke software to support complex building projects. Steve was seconded on a 3 year ‘Research Assistant’ position at RMIT University as part of a federally funded research program entitled ‘Delivering Digital Architecture in Australia’. This research program studied the methods Architects and Structural engineers can use to improve the delivery of projects typified by the emerging ‘Digital Architecture’. One outcome of this was the creation of the DesignLink toolkit.
