Richard Dyer is a British academic professor who specializes in film studies at King's College London. He is known for his star theory, which argues that celebrities are constructed by media institutions for financial profit. The theory has three parts: stars are constructed identities rather than real people; stars are commodities produced to make money; and stars represent certain ideologies to create fan bases. Dyer used examples like Lady Gaga to show how stars are modeled to appeal to target audiences. He believes stars allow audiences to relate their own feelings.

2. ABOUT RICHARD DYER
Richard Dyer was born in 1945 in Leeds ,he is an English
academic professor for film studies at Kings College London. He
mostly specializes in Italian cinema . As of 2006 he has joined Kings
college London.
3. INTRODUCTION TO HIS
THEORY
Richard dyers star theory can be split into three areas:
the star as construction meaning that the star is a construction and
not a real person e.g. Miley Cyrus
the star as a commodity means that stars are produced to create a
profit of their merchandise e.g. One direction
the star being an ideology states that the star will represent a certain
social group and views and then thus create ideologies.
4. EXAMPLES OF HIS THEORY
Richard dyers star theory is the idea that states that icons and
celebrities are manufactured by institutions for financial profit. He
states that music stars or film stars are constructed to represent “the
realism in people” experiencing realistic emotions and feelings so that
they can fit in with the audience, as this allows the target audience to
relate to themselves and how they can feel the star. Stars are portrayed
by the music industry to serve a purpose in the industry as it is to make
money using audiences, who respond to elements of a stars
personality by buying albums and cds and becoming a fan base.
5. AUDIENCES AND MUSIC
INDUSTRY
Stars are created for the beneficial of money purposes mostly. Increasing the brand and
trend identity benefits the music institutions as they will become the mark for the company
and will have increasing sales in all of the media institutions and any platform they can be
capable of.
The music industry then models the artist and justify their emotions around the target
audience they choose. For example Lady Gaga, according to Richard dyer, he said lady gaga
was modelled around fashion forward people so the audience can relate to her as a person
and also her music. The way she dresses is very obscure and weird this draws attention to
her due to her non-normality ,this way it makes her easy o remember and recall from
memory, Unlike rock bands e.g. Green day continue to wear dark dresses and have long
messy hair as this fits in the genre of rock stereotypes.
6. THEORY FOR
CONSTITUTIONS
The constitutions side of his theory states that the star is built for
an audience, and is not an individual person. The star is built with
someone signature to them that tell apart them from other stars
knowingly, for example Lady Gage's obscure fashion. Actor Daniel
Craig is now stereotyped because of the way he has been constructed,
he has now typecast as a ‘hard man’ with a British accent mainly
because of his previous roles in the James bond Trilogies.
7. HOW AM I GOING TO
APPLY MY THEORY ?
I am going to make my character a bold and dynamic person for my magazine cover as he
should be presented and filled with machoism and dominant person to be portrayed around his
target audience and fan base so that the kids 13+ and above can be encouraged by him as to
what he does for example ,he wouldn’t be your typical rapper that loves to talk about the
violence and grotesque elements of life but he will talk about inspirations and encouragements
through the festivals and press conferences.im going to apply Richard dyers theory by making the
star being an ideology meaning that the star will represent a certain social group and views and
then thus create ideologies. A good example would be Dr. Dre as there are certain people who
have or are following him as a social group and Dr. dre features in most of the songs due to the
friendship or relation he has with people and has no competition with them since he just
admires to make good music. Likewise I would like to make my star persona to be alike him.
