In 1946, scientists first discovered that DNA can be transferred between organisms. It is now known that there are several mechanisms for DNA transfer and that these occur in nature on a large scale, for example, it is a major mechanism for antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria. The first genetically modified plant was produced in 1983, using an antibiotic-resistant tobacco plant (Bawa, & Anilakumar, 2013). Genetically modified food organisms are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods (“GMO Facts,” 2016). Many argue that GMOs can cause environmental damage and health problems for consumers. This is because genetically modified foods have been linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sickness, sterile and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals.
While researching this topic, I found a lot of scientific evidence available to illustrate the effects of the health hazards caused by genetically modified food organisms. “Many scientific data indicate that animals fed by GM crops have been harmed or even died. One example reported had rats exposed to transgenic potatoes or soya had abnormal young sperm; cows, goats, buffalo, pigs and other livestock grazing on Bt-maize, GM cottonseed and certain biotech corn showed complications including early deliveries, abortions, infertility and also many died” (Maghari, & Ardekani, 2011). Another issue is that new proteins can be synthesized that can produce unpredictable allergenic effects. For example, bean plants that were genetically modified to increase cysteine and methionine content were discarded after the discovery that the expressed protein of the transgene was highly allergenic (Bawa, & Anilakumar, 2013).

The entire purpose of a pesticide is to repel or kill species that are harmful to certain desirable plants, most of which serve as edible produce to humans. In the scientific community, and particularly in psychology and health, there has been an
active and ongoing debate on the relative merits of adopting either quantitative or
qualitative methods, especially when researching into human behaviour (Bowling, 2009;
Oakley, 2000; Smith, 1995a, 1995b; Smith, 1998). In part, this debate formed a component of
the development in the 1970s of our thinking about science. Andrew Pickering has described
this movement as the “sociology of scientific knowledge” (SSK), where our scientific
understanding, developing scientific ‘products’ and ‘know-how’, became identified as
forming components in a wider engagement with society’s environmental and social context
(Pickering, 1992, pp. 1). Since that time, the debate has continued so that today there is an
increasing acceptance of the use of qualitative methods in the social sciences (Denzin &
Lincoln, 2000; Morse, 1994; Punch, 2011; Robson, 2011) and health sciences (Bowling, 2009;
Greenhalgh & Hurwitz, 1998; Murphy & Dingwall, 1998). The utility of qualitative methods
has also been recognised in psychology. As Nollaig Frost (2011) observes, authors such as
Carla Willig and Wendy Stainton Rogers consider qualitative psychology is much more
accepted today and that it has moved from “the margins to the mainstream in psychology in
the UK.” (Willig & Stainton Rogers, 2008, pp. 8). Nevertheless, in psychology, qualitative
methodologies are still considered to be relatively ‘new’ (Banister, Bunn, Burman, et al.,
2011; Hayes, 1998; Richardson, 1996) despite clear evidence to the contrary (see, for example,
the discussion on this point by Rapport et al., 2005). Nicki Hayes observes, scanning the
content of some early journals from the 1920s – 1930s that many of these more historical
papers “discuss personal experiences as freely as statistical data” (Hayes, 1998, 1). This can
be viewed as an early development of the case-study approach, now an accepted
methodological approach in psychological, health care and medical research, where our
knowledge about people is enhanced by our understanding of the individual ‘case’ (May &

3. The topic discussed in the article I chose is mental illness. The article discusses the question of the affect the media plays in regards to one's perception of mental illness. The study designed involves the random assignment of individuals to descriptions of a violent accident. Some descriptions were left unaltered while others were manipulated to mention the term and concept of mental illness. Chan and Yanos (2018) state "we also examined the potential moderating impact of cognitive styles and preexisting attitudes and beliefs."

Chan and Yanos (2018) state "roughly, 43% of the participants in the experimental condition reported the cause of the incident as related to mental illness, in contrast with only 2% of participants in the control condition." When asked to provide a recount of the article 42% of participants mentioned mental illness while none of the participants of the control group did (Chan & Yanos, 2018).
7. In an unscientific method one can simply ask the question of does mental illness make one violent? Asking a question such as this doesn't entail proper research but a simple yes or no question. Research isn't completed to discover why individuals may have these particular beliefs.

This article is fascinating to say the least. It speaks on the idea that people see followers of other groups as being less of an ideal follower, see them as not being an effective follower, and see members of their own group as being “better” overall. This non effective follower is seen as more conformist, blindly following what they are told, and unable to be think for themselves. Conversely, they see their own group as dynamic free thinkers, active, thoug.

Describe a social theory that was discussed in the “Social Relationships and Health” journal article and indicate how it was used to support the research.
From my understanding of the journal for this week, the social theory was how some ones health can be effected with or with out social relations. From the research it touches on how a person or people can be happy and also live longer with better health, when practicing social relationships. The article discuss how the theory of social relationships can make people stringer and healthier. It was used to support the research because the researchers conducted studies not only on humans but animals as well to prove this theory.
Choose one of the quantitative research results presented in the article; describe the evidence presented and indicate which variables of the experiment were highlighted.
The quantitative research results that I choose from the article was when the researchers were discovering that social relationships can cause a risk factors of mortality, and probably morbidity, from a wide range of diseases. From the readings the researchers shown that they used criteria include strength and consistencies of statistical association across a wide range of studies an cause and effect with animals and humans. An experiment of behavior pattern as an risk factor for (type A) heart disease. 1964 Surgeon general had evidence that social relationship and health increased that cigarette smoking was a cause or risk factor for mortality a range of disease. These factors are important because the researchers seen that there is less association of social relationships when it comes to smoking, because smoking is also linked to cancer.

Although social relationships as independent, overruling, and moderating variables affecting stress, health, or the relationships between them have been widely studied over the past decade, almost no attention has been paid to social relationships as dependent variables ( House, Landis & Umberson, 1988). I believe that modern social media sites support the claims that social variables determine both health and the nature of social relationships, both link social relationship to health. Modern social media is where you can give updates on thoughts and at one point it was some where you can express freedom of speech.

Introduction
Autism researchers continue to grapple with activities that best serve the purpose of fostering positive interpersonal relationships for children with autism. Children have benefited from therapy sessions that provide ongoing activities to aid their ability to engage in healthy social interactions. However, less is known about how K–12 schools might implement programs for this group of individuals to provide additional opportunities for growth, or even if and how school programs would be of assistance in the end. There is a gap in understanding the possibilities of implementing such programs in schools to foster the social and mental health of children with autism. The six articles I selected for this assignment present research on different types of therapeutic programs that have been used to promote social interactions in children with autism.

Wimpory and Nash provided a case study
for implementing music interaction therapy as part of play therapy aimed at cultivating communication skills in infants with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The researchers based their argument on films taken of play-based therapy sessions that introduced music interaction therapy. To assess the success of music play, Wimpory and Nash filmed the follow-up play-based interaction between the parent and the child. The follow-up interactions revealed that 20 months after the introduction of music play, the child developed prolonged playful interaction with both the psychologist and the parent. The follow-up films also revealed that the child initiated spontaneously pretend play during these later sessions. After the introduction of music, the child began to develop appropriate language skills.
Since the publication date for this case study is 1999, the results are dated. Although this study found that music interaction therapy is useful, emerging research in the field has undoubtedly changed in the time since this article was published. Wimpory and Nash wrote this article for a specific audience, including psychologists and researchers working with infants diagnosed with ASD. Their focus means that others beyond these fields may not find the findings applicable to their work.

When a single study is conducted with a particular sample and procedure, can the results then be generalized to other populations of research participants, or to other ways of manipulating or measuring the variables? Recall from Chapter 4 that internal validity refers to the ability to infer that there is a causal relationship between variables. External validity is the extent to which findings may be generalized.
GENERALIZING TO OTHER POPULATIONS
Even though a researcher may randomly assign participants to experimental conditions, rarely are participants randomly selected from the general population. As we noted in Chapters 7 and 9, the individuals who participate in psychological research are usually selected because they are available, and the most available population consists of college students—or more specifically, first- and second-year students enrolled in the introductory psychology course to satisfy a general education requirement. They may also be from a particular college or university, may be volunteers, or may be mostly males or mostly females. So, are our research findings limited to these types of subjects, or can we generalize our findings to a more general population? After considering these issues, we will examine the larger issue of culture and how research findings can be generalized to different cultural groups.
College Students
Smart (1966) found that college students were studied in over 70% of the articles published between 1962 and 1964 in the Journal of Experimental Psychology and the Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology. Sears (1986) reported similar percentages in 1980 and 1985 in a variety of social psychology journals; Arnett (2008) found that 67% of the articles in the 2007 volume of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology used college student samples. The potential problem is that such studies use a highly restricted population. Your textbook discusses the 5 steps of conducting anthropological research or fieldwork. I typically add another step in the beginning known as preparation. Thus, there are six steps to conducting anthropological fieldwork. In fact, the first step, preparation, is important for anyone visiting another culture or working with people from another culture.
Step 1: Preparation
Preparing to conduct research on a different culture or visit another culture can be time consuming. One of the most important issues is geographical location of the culture you plan to visit or study. There are funding issues, health precautions (shots and medications), governmental permissions (visas and passports), language issues (Do you have an interpreter? or Do you know the language?), Personal affairs (Who is going to pay your bills? Feed your cat?), Packing issues (How much are you allowed to take? What items are a necessity?) and finally, do you have an informant and a site to do research? (Someone within that culture to help you with your research or help you on your visit). These issues take a lot of time to work out and are an important first step.
Step 2: Selecting a Research Problem
In the past the goal of anthropological research was to describe a culture in as much detail as possible (ethnography). Today, the research is typically problem based. For example, when I went to Botswana, Swaziland, and South Africa my goal was to understand the AIDS crisis and compare approaches to reducing HIV/AIDS in these countries. Often times the re.

3. The topic discussed in the article I chose is mental illness. The article discusses the question of the affect the media plays in regards to one's perception of mental illness. The study designed involves the random assignment of individuals to descriptions of a violent accident. Some descriptions were left unaltered while others were manipulated to mention the term and concept of mental illness. Chan and Yanos (2018) state "we also examined the potential moderating impact of cognitive styles and preexisting attitudes and beliefs."

When asked to provide a recount of the article 42% of participants mentioned mental illness while none of the participants of the control group did (Chan & Yanos, 2018).
7. In an unscientific method one can simply ask the question of does mental illness make one violent? Asking a question such as this doesn't entail proper research but a simple yes or no question. Research isn't completed to discover why individuals may have these particular beliefs.

Describe a social theory that was discussed in the “Social Relationships and Health” journal article and indicate how it was used to support the research.
From my understanding of the journal for this week, the social theory was how some ones health can be effected with or with out social relations. From the research it touches on how a person or people can be happy and also live longer with better health, when practicing social relationships. The article discuss how the theory of social relationships can make people stringer and healthier. It was used to support the research because the researchers conducted studies not only on humans but animals as well to prove this theory.

The quantitative research results that I choose from the article was when the researchers were discovering that social relationships can cause a risk factors of mortality, and probably morbidity, from a wide range of diseases. From the readings the researchers shown that they used criteria include strength and consistencies of statistical association across a wide range of studies an cause and effect with animals and humans. An experiment of behavior pattern as an risk factor for (type A) heart disease. 1964 Surgeon general had evidence that social relationship and health increased that cigarette smoking was a cause or risk factor for mortality a range of disease. These factors are important because the researchers seen that there is less association of social relationships when it comes to smoking, because smoking is also linked to cancer.

Autism researchers continue to grapple with activities that best serve the purpose of fostering positive interpersonal relationships for children with autism. Children have benefited from therapy sessions that provide ongoing activities to aid their ability to engage in healthy social interactions. However, less is known about how K–12 schools might implement programs for this group of individuals to provide additional opportunities for growth, or even if and how school programs would be of assistance in the end. There is a gap in understanding the possibilities of implementing such programs in schools to foster the social and mental health of children with autism. The six articles I selected for this assignment present research on different types of therapeutic programs that have been used to promote social interactions in children with autism.

Wimpory and Nash provided a case study
for implementing music interaction therapy as part of play therapy aimed at cultivating communication skills in infants with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The researchers based their argument on films taken of play-based therapy sessions that introduced music interaction therapy. To assess the success of music play, Wimpory and Nash filmed the follow-up play-based interaction between the parent and the child. The follow-up interactions revealed that 20 months after the introduction of music play, the child developed prolonged playful interaction with both the psychologist and the parent. The follow-up films also revealed that the child initiated spontaneously pretend play during these later sessions. After the introduction of music, the child began to develop appropriate language skills.
Since the publication date for this case study is 1999, the results are dated. Although this study found that music interaction therapy is useful, emerging research in the field has undoubtedly changed in the time since this article was published. Wimpory and Nash wrote this article for a specific audience, including psychologists and researchers working with infants diagnosed with ASD. Their focus means that others beyond these fields may not find the findings applicable to their work.

The four core values I chose are as listed
Appreciate and support the bond between the child and family. A bond between a child and family is very strong. A parent is it's child 's first teacher. Entering school can be stressful and nerve wrecking for both child and parent. I will let the parents know that they can be involved with their children by volunteering their time to the classroom. I will encourage parents and family to come see how their child is learning through plays or show casing their work at the end of each lesson. For example, we just finished our lesson on plants and how they grow. We drew pictures of seeds, stems, flowers, dirt, etc. We even planted some seeds. Now it's time for performance. The children worked so hard in making their costumes out of construction paper and learning to memorize their lines. Now it is time to invite the parents to watch their children act out what they learned about plants.
Respect the dignity, worth, and uniqueness of each individual (child, family member, and colleagues). It is important to respect the children, families, and colleagues. Every child is different, I will learn about the children's uniqueness and teach the children that everyone learns differently. In my classroom we will discuss and learn about the student's culture and habits. I can one day have parents bring in a dish from their culture and as we sitting down in the classroom talking about how and where this dish comes from, we can then taste it.
Recognize that children and adults achieve their full potential in the context of relationships that are based on trust and respect. At the start of the day I will greet each child as an individual. I want the children to know that I trust and respect them and in return they can trust and respect me.
Base our work on knowledge of how children develop and learn. I will have a classroom where the child can develop their physical, cognitive,and affective domains. I will have centers for art, reading, writing, and imaginary. With rules written on the rules for the children to follow.
My knowledge and understanding of these values will help me to be a better Early Childhood educator and colleague because I can clearly see that becoming a teacher will be a big impact on the children. I want it to be a "great" impact and by learning and understanding these core values will then help be a great influence on the children that I will teach. The first concept would be Child-rearing styles. In this movie, Sonny adopted a permissive parenting style where he allowed the child to make his own choices, so much that he even allowed him to choose his own name! Sonny later learns that this style of parenting is causing trouble in the child's schooling and resorts to being more assertive in the child's decision making process.

My second concept would be aggression. Sonny displays hostility through both physical and verbal aggression towards others. The child observes this behavior and imitates the same behaviors in situations. The child, Julian, actually feels seeing others get physically hurt is comical. It seems that Sonny's outrageous and aggressive behavior is a result of his father's authoritarian child-rearing style.

The third concept I would cover in relation to the movie is resilience. If not for this 5 year-old's resilience, Sonny probably would have placed the child with social services. Julian was "delivered" to Sonny's door with no idea as to who Sonny was or why his mother left him there. We later learn that Julian's mom dies from cancer. While with his mother there probably was a considerable amount of neglect being as though she was probably to weak and sick to tend to her son needs and the next best person to leave him to is a complete stranger. Considering this, Julian was an adaptive and happy young boy. Also, the sunglasses that Sonny gives Julian help Julian adapt to anxious situations and calm his fear.
My professors comment on my answers was:

Students should be prepared to make a brief (5 minutes) oral present highlighting what they learned through their literature review. The final paper should include the following sections (include headings): 1. Introduction (approx. 1 page) Describe the importance of the problem in a social context and/or service delivery context. Your Introduction should answer the question why your study topic is important and relevant to social work research or practice.
- 3. 2. Population of Interest and Research Problem (approx. 1 page) Provide relevant population statistics (demographics), and statistics on the extent, scope, prevalence, and impact of the problem. If the problem you researched is not familiar to most people, explain the problem. 3. Literature Review (approx. 8 pages) Discuss what you learned through your review of the literature. Your sources will include 10 articles (at least 6 scholarly, peer reviewed articles published in scientific journals). For the review, be critical! Synthesize what you have learned and highlight the followings: 1) what is known about your topic, 2) the gaps in knowledge, and 3) how this literature is or is not directly relevant for your topic. If little or no empirical research has been done, indicate this. For example, your review of the literature may suggest that: 1) the topic you have selected has not been studied with the population you intended to study, or 2) you are addressing a research question that, based on your search of the literature, has not yet been studied.
- 4. 4. References Follow the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Publication Manual citation styles and provide full citations in the reference section.
