THE ART OF DRAWING
FIGURES & CIRCUITS
Figures & Circuits can talk to
us, more than words…!
Vidyasagar Sir explains…
www.vidyasagar.academy
FIGURES CAN TALK TO US…!
 Anyone can draw figures, but not
NEAT AND CLEAN.
 Very few students can draw figures TO
THE SCALE.
 Even a few of them can draw figures
with correct orientation.
 Drawing a perfect figure is an art!
www.vidyasagar.academy
HOW TO LEARN THIS ART?
 Keen observation is THE KEY to
acquire this art.
 When your teacher draws a figure on
blackboard, it is NOT your free time to
chat with your friends.
 Instead, you must concentrate; how is
he drawing it?
www.vidyasagar.academy
WHAT TO OBSERVE?
 Observe each and every action of the
teacher…!
 From where does he start?
 What are the movements of his hand? How does
he draw curves?
 How does he connect one component with the
other?
 What are the size proportions of one component
with the other?
 Which component in the figure is distinct than
the others?
 The list could be, just endless…!
REMEMBER…
 It’s up to you, how do you watch it and keep
it, in your mind…!
 Most importantly, HOW DO YOU TRY IT FOR
YOURSELF…!
 Try it for sure…! It’s simple…!
 You, too, can do it…!
 Your teacher was also a student. But he
cultivated this art, with practice, practice and
practice only…!
 You know it. Practice makes a man perfect…!
HOW TO ACQUIRE THIS SKILL?
 I told you already. It’s a matter of
observations & practice!
 So! Are you ready to learn it…?
 Good…!
 That’s Great…!
 I knew, you are a smart student…!
www.vidyasagar.academy
LET’S START…
 First know the basic things…
 There are 3 styles of drawing a figure or a
circuit on a paper or even in the answer
sheet.
 The left aligned figure.
 The right aligned figure.
 And the centered figure.
 While drawing figures in Physics, Chemistry
or Electronics Exams, it is better to draw
centered figures.
LEFT/RIGHT ALIGNED FIGURE
 These are left & right aligned
figures, with some text surrounding
it. They are generally small figures
and have not long description. Such
figures are better to align either
left or right.
 These figures have one drawback.
While reading the text, sometimes
they may be overlooked!
CENTER ALIGN FIGURE
 Following circuit is center aligned. Because its
horizontal expanse is more than vertical height…
 This circuit has long description. It’s working is also
related to wave diagrams and truth table, etc.
 So such figures must be center aligned.
CONVENTIONAL RULES…
 Symbols of battery & capacitor are
different.
 Indicate input/output terminals of a
block or circuit with hollow circles.
+
CONVENTIONAL RULES…
 Wires connecting each other are marked with a thick dot.
 And the wires crossing but not connecting have no dot.
CONVENTIONAL RULES…
 Every component, block, device, label, etc. must be
proportional with respect to each other.
 Symmetrical circuits look beautiful & create good
impression on the mind of a teacher…!
CONVENTIONAL RULES…
 Don’t draw any symbol in two different ways i.e.
always use same symbol for same device.
NOTE THIS…
 A detailed labeled figure can directly “talk” with
the reader…!
NOTE THIS…
 This is a stand alone figure. The figure itself explains the
process and mechanism of CRO display. But such figures are of
course difficult to draw. However, you must try.
NOTE THIS…
 Don’t be afraid to leave blank areas on the page
but don’t try to fill up the page, either.
CONVENTIONAL RULES…
 All wires must be aligned either vertically or horizontally,
unless there is a good reason to do otherwise.
CONVENTIONAL RULES…
 All parts must have a label and distinct &
informative caption to the circuit...
CONVENTIONAL RULES
 The direction of current in the circuit must be
correctly shown. KCL must be understood clearly.
CONVENTIONAL RULES…
 Instead of joining number of lines together, you can
break the connections and simplify the look of the
circuit.
NOTE THIS…
 While drawing a wave and its details, its shape must be
precious.
 Its relevant quadrant and projections on the axis must
be clearly shown.
NOTE THIS…
 Every symbol must represent the exact identity of
the relevant device…
NOTE THIS…
 When a circuit has two different sets of working, it’s
a good idea to draw two independent circuits with
relevant details...
NOTE THIS…
 If you want to draw the schematic of a device, be
careful about its real shape & appearance to project
its 3D view…
NOTE THIS…
 But if you want to draw just 2D schematic, you can
ignore the inner details...
NOTE THIS…
 Proportion is a vital element in figures, when it
comes to waves in particular...!
NOTE THIS…
 Size, shape, symmetry and proportion are very
important factors, while drawing logic circuits...
NOTE THIS…
 Specific arrangement, order
of repetitive connections,
distinct internal spacing
and relevant proportions
makes the circuit beautiful
as well as easy to
understand…!
NOTE THIS…
 But sometimes, in special cases, you have to ignore
proportions to manifest the meaning of figure…
NOTE THIS…
 Shading the important sections of a figure, creates
good impression and also become noticeable…
NOTE THIS…
 Showing directions with arrows is also an important
element through which the student can convince
the teacher, that his concepts are clear…
NOTE THIS…
 Sometimes, to manifest a crystal clear concept in
the form of an idea, a box creates beautiful impact
on the mind of a reader...!
NOTE THIS…
 No matter that the neat
and clear figures or
circuits or diagrams ,
create good impression...
 But sometimes the
numerical arrangement
also creates very good
impression on teacher...
WELL, WELL, WELL…!
 My dear students, these are just the tips with which
you can improve your figures and circuits and
diagrams while writing in the ANSWER SHEET in
the examination.
 Remember, you may be already well prepared in
your subject, but...
The presentation makes
all the difference…!
MINIMUM NEEDS…
 A ruled paper of average size.
 A soft support to hold below the paper.
 A pen or pencil
 A small 6” scale,
if you’re not sure,
you can draw
a straight line…!
This slide show is written for the
students who draw electrical &
electronic circuits. But hope that, it may
be equally helpful for other students,
too…!
