Beyond the visual: The Body in Contemporary ArtDeborahJ
When we think of the Body in Contemporary Art we could consider a number of different and relevant aspects. For instance, the body - the human form - is central in art, traditionally the body was often used to explore allegory, beauty and sexuality and so on. But in the twentieth century there was a significant shift in both how the body was perceived, and how it was used to create art across a range of media, from painting and sculpture to installation, photography, video art, performance and participatory art. By considering the different roles played by the body in art, we can identify that there has been a shift from being the subject, for example, in a portraiture, to becoming an active presence in live and participatory events. Alongside this there has also been a significant transformation of the role of the audience, broadly speaking, from passive viewer to active participant.
This document discusses several purposes and functions of art:
- Art for delight, providing enjoyment and lifting people above daily life. It refers to aesthetics and appreciation of beauty.
- Art as commentary, communicating ideas from artist to viewer through subject matter and style. It testifies to experiences.
- Art used in worship, enhancing religious rituals across many faiths through creative works.
- Art for commemoration, aiding remembrance through public works honoring people and events. It connects humanity across time.
- Art used for persuasion, influencing opinions through government buildings and other means. It invites action.
- Art for self-expression, conveying an artist's personality, feelings and worldview.
The document discusses many aspects of defining and understanding art, including:
- Art is subjective and definitions have changed over time and cultures. Intention and context are important.
- Meaning in art can be explicit or implicit and comes from interactions between form, content, context, media, and genre/style.
- Different artistic genres exist like portrait, landscape, abstraction. Representational art depicts reality while abstraction references it less directly.
- Artistic styles vary widely from classical to romantic to realism to surrealism to pop art. Media also impacts meaning from traditional to contemporary materials. Process is also significant in some works.
The document provides an overview of abstractionism in art. It discusses how abstract art uses color, lines and shapes to create visual language without representing real world things. Abstract art can deviate from reality slightly, partially or fully. It was primarily influenced by early 20th century movements like Fauvism and Cubism. Additional influences included philosophy, technology, science and reflections of society at the time. Key abstract artists mentioned include Wassily Kandinsky, Kasimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian. Kandinsky was one of the first creators of pure abstraction and was inspired by sources like color, sound, music and other artists.
Murals have existed for thousands of years, from prehistoric cave paintings to modern street art. They serve to depict life, culture, history, and share political or social messages of the time. The Mexican muralism movement in the early 20th century, led by 'Los Tres Grandes' artists, used murals to promote national identity and unity following the Mexican Revolution. Today, murals around the world continue to communicate stories and messages through various artistic styles.
This document defines art as any creative work of self-expression that can take various forms such as painting, photography, digital art, movie making, and sculpture. It explains that art allows people to express their feelings and relax, and conveys the artist's perspective. The document also discusses how art programs can help students by improving memory, concentration, decision-making and critical thinking skills. Finally, it states that art can teach about history and society, as well as encourage and inspire people.

This document summarizes Kathie Gossett's work on revising understandings of medieval rhetoric. It outlines four periods of medieval rhetoric defined by influential figures. Our project is aimed at secondary schools that wish to develop a socially relevant topic that is difficult to insert in a normal scholastic program: money.
The students will be given encouragement on how to approach the theme and create a cultural project that is aimed at developing the ideas of the group and making them accessible to the community.
This will be achieved through the distribution of relevant material and by working side by side with operators in the sector, with the objective of helping them broaden creative and pensive abilities.
The conclusion of the project will be a communal event during which the single groups will be able to present the final result of the work carried out and a common debate will be held.

This document summarizes a study comparing quality control systems for environmental assessments in the Netherlands and Denmark. The study examined whether the "Rolls Royce" quality control system in the Netherlands leads to higher quality reports, greater environmental awareness, and more influence on decisions than the less stringent "VW Beetle" approach in Denmark.
The results found that the Dutch system leads to better scoped reports and slightly more credible reports, but not necessarily better outcomes. In contrast, the Danish system was found to increase environmental awareness and integration of environmental values into decisions to a greater extent. Overall, the study provides an empirical basis for rethinking the relationship between quality control, quality, and effectiveness of environmental assessments.
