2. Robert Mangold

One of the most inspiring artist I came across while
doing my research was Robert Mangold. Mangold
prides his work on simplicity. He uses simple shapes and
lines to make his paintings, drawings and objects.
Mangold uses simplicity in his work to describe complex
ideas. The below image is Mangolds column painting.

The one thing that gets overlooked in his paintings is the
complexity. The lines are swirly yet evident the blocks
are simple yet they provide a viewer with a thought. The
viewer is left with awe over what this is about and what
it represents.

4. My response to Mangold
This is a drawing that I drew after looking over Mangolds works.
My idea behind this drawing was quite simple, it was to keep it
simple. I wanted to use common shapes and simple evident
lines. I also wanted there to be a sort of confusion in the
viewers eyes when he saw the drawing. I wanted to add
complexity to it. I decided to combine two shapes that we see
everyday circles and rectangles , two shapes Mangold uses
very often. I decided to shade it in to instead of coloring it to
avoid the audience seeing the drawing as a graph. I wanted
the audience to let their imagination decide what it was. The
biggest inspiration I got from Mangold was simplicity, to keep
the objects simple yet the make the picture complex. And that
is what I tried to do with this image.

6. Paul Pfeiffer

Paul was by far the most inspiring artist for me because I
consider myself a sports junkie. Paul has a whole new take on
sports where he eliminates the most important thing in the
game and that is the players everyone wants to see. He wants
to shift the viewers focus away from the player or the name on
the jersey. Instead Paul wants the viewer to focus on the things
that often get overlooked like the audience or other objects.
In one of his images Paul took the back from a players jersey
and erased the name and number. The idea behind that was
to eliminate the audiences focus from the name and number
on the jersey. He wanted the audience to think and to look at
the plays or the game as a whole other then just the player. A
lot of times sports fans get to caught up in the name and
number on the back of a jersey and forget to focus on the
game itself.

8. My response

This was a picture I took while attending the Redskins vs. 49ers
last Monday night. I had seats in the nose bleeds section but
that was perfect for my project. This image was inspired by Paul
because I wanted to eliminate the players and even the field
from the viewers eyes. I used digital technology to blur out the
field and the players. I wanted the viewers attention to be
focused on the audience and even more so the stadium itself. I
wanted the viewer to see how truly amazing of a articular work
a sports stadium really is. That is one thing that often gets
overlooked when watching a game on TV. The surroundings
and where the game is happening is one of the best things
about the game.

10. Jenny Holzer

Jenny Holzer is a very unique artist. Many casual viewers
may not even consider her work actual art. I for one love
her artwork. She uses language and words to make her
artwork. She uses words and sentences that will provoke a
user and get a reaction out of them. That is the purpose of
a great artwork in a snapshot. To get a reaction from the
viewer and to get them thinking about your work. Jenny
makes words the focal point of her work and that is one
thing I have never came across previously with any other
artist. In her work "Truisms” she uses the words “Protect me
from what I want”. These words get a reaction from the
audience because it gets the audience thinking about
what Jenny meant and what she was thinking. Jenny says
she makes work to focus on “unnecessary cruelty” and she
wants people to wake up and change the way they do
things as a reaction to her work.

12. My response
In my response to Jenny`s artwork I wanted to work on it
backwards. I wanted to come up with a word or a sentence that
would provoke the audience first then make the background. Like
Jenny I wanted to focus on something that was important to me
and something that I felt was cruel. I used the phrase “ Live ,
Laugh, But don’t fall in love” . This is a different take on the famous
saying “ Live, Laugh, Love” . I wanted to provoke a reaction from
the audience after seeing the last part. I feel a lot of the younger
generation specially makes a lot of mistakes when they fall in love
and they do a lot of stupid things as a response to it. I want them
to think it through before they go around falling in love with
someone blindly.
