transition of the characters feelings, thoughts, and states of mind. Through Roger
Chillingworth, Nathaniel Hawthorne demonstrates that trying to enact retribution on
another will typically end in one s own demise.
The one definite reason for Roger Chillingworth s desire for retribution on his
perceived enemy results from Dimmesdale s act of adultery with his wife while he
had not been present. Chillingworth sends Hester Prynne, his wife, to the New World
two years before while he had been busy in England. Hester becomes impregnated by
the town s minister, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale. Chillingworth becomes infuriated;
he alters his identity, giving himself a new name and profession. Chillingworth still

tried to meditate before and I could never truly calm my mind from the thousands of
thoughts that would swirl around. However, after meditating for fifteen minutes daily

Thursday November 3rd presented by Professor David Peters Corbett, and the main

read this story of Liesel Meminger and wonder how anyone could ever survive

Of the three major correctional reformers, I believe that Cesare Beccaria
accomplished the most for corrections. Cesare Beccaria emphasized that the use of
punishment for crimes was used solely for the purpose of protecting society and
preventing crime. This is extremely important, because in the past, individuals were
using punishment as a means of revenge, but Cesare changed this idea. Cesare s
ideas eventually led to creation of classical criminology, and this alone helped to pave
the road to ending unjustifiable punishments and inhumane treatment.
Classical criminology contained six principles, and all of these principles emphasized
the importance of using punishment to promote deterrence and prevention. Within
these principles Cesare explains that prevention is more important than anything.
This idea led to major reforms, including getting secret accusations and torturing of
individuals abolished. That was not all, however, Cesare saw that the accused were
not being given the benefit of the doubt, hence the torturing of individuals to get
confessions that may or may not be true. He decided that the accused should have
the right to a speedy trial, also humane treatment before the trial, and finally, the right
to bring forward any evidence they may have on their behalf. This ultimately gave
the accused a voice that they never had. Today, we see the idea of a speedy trial
within our Constitution, along with other laws promoting fairness for those who

What are the primary similarities and differences between Aristotle s and Plato s
philosophy?
A primary similarity between Aristotle and Plato is that they were both Greek
philosophers. Plato s philosophy is based on dissatisfaction of the world. He believed
that philosophy was a practice for death and dying. He believed that the aim of
philosophy is to transcend our attachment to the physical world, including our bodies.
In contract, Aristotle believed the aim of philosophy is to not escape or transcend the
physical world, but to make sense of it and understand it.
Both philosophers studied the forms, but had very differing views on it. Plato
believed that the soul was immortal. He believed that it existed before birth and after
death. His theory of forms proposes that we have the idea of a perfect chair or
perfect circle not because we have seen them before or because they were
described to us, but the image was already known to us through the world of forms.
His theory recognizes that our soul had already lived through the world of forms
and as the body experiences things, it unlocks memories from the world of forms
that the body and mind recognize. Aristotle disagreed with Plato and believed that
the soul is already a part of the body and was made with the body. Aristotle believed
that the body supported the soul and that when the body died, the soul died with it.
