They range in size from a few millimeters to several centimeters and may occur singly or in groups. Women who have completed or are going through menopause have a higher risk of having endometrial polyps, although obesity, high blood pressure, and certain medications (such as the breast cancer drug tamoxifen) also increase risk. Some women with uterine polyps have no symptoms and may not need treatment, while patients with symptoms may suffer irregular menstrual bleeding, excessively heavy menstrual periods, and bleeding between menstrual periods. They may also experience vaginal bleeding after menopause, as well as infertility (if polyps block the fallopian tubes, cervix, or prevent fertilized eggs from attaching to the uterus). Currently, the cause of uterine fibroids is not known. Although some may be cancerous, most uterine polyps are not malignant. However, some uterine fibroids can become cancerous at a later stage.
