Overview
• Bentley Historical Library
– Two departments: Collections and Curation
– Document activities of individuals and
organizations in MI and serve as official U-M
archives
• April 2014: $355,000 grant from Mellon
Foundation
• Partner with U-M Library (administratively
separate)
Project Goals
• Facilitate the creation and reuse of descriptive
and administrative metadata
• Streamline the ingest and deposit of fully
processed materials into a digital preservation
repository.
– “Ingest”: receipt and validation of digital content
as well as performance of certain actions to
prepare the content for long-term preservation
and access.
Key Steps
• Create accession records with ASpace.
• Ingest material with Archivematica.
– Create one or more SIPs/digital objects from transfer
• Create archival description in ASpace; use API to
associate with SIPs in Archivematica.
• Prepare Simple Archive Format packages to batch
upload content into DSpace.
• Export list of handles to associate with digital
objects in ASpace.
Progress Thus Far
• A good developer is hard to find…
• Ongoing discussions with Artefactual Systems and
LYRASIS.
• ASpace testing:
– Legacy EAD and accession records
– Conventions for new data entry (upcoming)
• Consolidation and review of physical/digital
processing workflows
• Formalization of digital preservation policy
• New Position:
