Antioxidants
 Substances that are able to neutralize reactive
molecules and reduce oxidative damage
 Result of metabolic processes and environmental
sources
 Vitamin C, Vitamin E, beta-carotene, Vitamin A,
selenium, iron, zinc, copper and manganese
What are
free radicals?
 Free radical: an atom that has
lost an electron and is left
with an unpaired electron.
 Free radicals are highly
reactive and can cause damage
to molecules in the cell.
Process of aging.
Presence of free radicals in nature.
Effect of antioxidant in aging.
Fight Aging With Antioxidants:-
Antioxidants are powerful nutrients that protect the
healthy cells of the body from the negative effects of free
radical compounds. Free radicals can result from a
variety of causes such as normal metabolic reactions in
the body, cigarette smoke, pollution and sun exposure. If
free radical activity is left uncontrolled, then the health
of the body can suffer. Thus, it is beneficial to consume
antioxidant nutrients through your diet to help combat
free radicals and promote overall health.
Free radicals and cancer.
 Free radicals are highly reactive chemicals that have the
potential to harm cells. They are created when an atom or a
molecule (a chemical that has two or more atoms) either
gains or loses an electron (a small negatively charged
particle found in atoms). Free radicals are formed naturally
in the body and play an important role in many normal
cellular processes . At high concentrations, however, free
radicals can be hazardous to the body and damage all
major components of cells, including DNA, proteins, and
cell membranes. The damage to cells caused by free
radicals, especially the damage to DNA, may play a role in
the development of cancer and other health conditions.
Natural foods having antioxidants.
Anti aging foods and cosmetics.
 Smooth, radiant skin is something everyone wants.
While there's no magic bullet, the food you eat, along
with a healthy lifestyle, can help stall some of the
visible signs of aging.
 "Eat smaller portions. Choose nutrient-dense, healthy
foods from all of the different food groups. Exercise,
and wear sunscreen. All of these things will help you
look and feel younger,“.
Anti aging foods
Cosmetics.
 Cosmetics are care substances used to enhance the
appearance of the human body. They are generally
mixtures of chemical compounds, some being
derived from natural sources and many being
synthetics.
What is the actions of antioxidants
in the body?
 An antioxidant is a molecule that inhibits the
oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical
reaction involving the loss of electrons or an increase
in oxidation state. Oxidation reactions can produce
free radicals. In turn, these radicals can start chain
reactions. When the chain reaction occurs in a cell, it
can cause damage or death to the cell. Antioxidants
terminate these chain reactions by removing free
radical intermediates, and inhibit other oxidation
reactions. They do this by being oxidized themselves,
so antioxidants are often reducing agents.
