This document discusses the economic challenges facing Arab countries and elements needed for a new vision. It outlines how Arab countries arrived at their current state in 2010, describing growth led by oil and services, lack of industrialization, employment in low productivity sectors, and rising poverty and inequality. While some progress was made on social indicators, governance deficits persisted. The current state is assessed depending on the lens used, with challenges including political instability, conflict, declining oil revenues, youth unemployment, and environmental threats. A new vision is needed to achieve inclusive and sustainable development.

Session on: Oil, Rents and Politics:
Forty-five years after Hossein Mahdavy developed the modern concept of a “rentier state,” hundreds of studies have been conducted on the ways that oil wealth seems to influence governance. This session will give an overview of some key insights about state-building, development policies, accountability and conflict, particularly those that cast light on the oil-rich Arab states during a period of low prices. Venezuela, under chavismo, offers a good political economy illustration of how a country can economically underperform during commodity booms, largely thanks to spending bonanzas related to electoral cycles.

• Consumer expenditure in SSA
equaled nearly $600 billion in
2010, accounting for almost eight
percent of all emerging-market

nearly $1 trillion by 2020.
• Consumer spending in South
Africa and Nigeria accounts for 51
percent of SSA's total expenditure.
• Poverty in SSA is decreasing
rapidly—from 40 percent in 1980 to
less than 30 percent in 2008—and is
expected to fall to 20 percent by 2020.
• By 2050, almost 60 percent of
people in SSA will live in cities,

This means 800 million more people

Russian anarchist and anti-war movement in the third year of full-scale warAntti Rautiainen
Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.
