4. The Contemporary Theories and
Approaches to Literature
1. Formalist Approach – emphasizes the
form of a literary work to determine its
meaning, focusing on literary elements and
how they work to create meaning.
2. Biological Approach – emphasizes the
importance of the authors’ life and
background into account when analyzing a
text.
5. 3. Mythological Approach – the title is
misleading, this is not about mythology. It
examines the “universe” elements of human life
as they occur across cultures.
4. Historical Approach – posits that every
literary work is the is the product of its time and
it’s world.
6. 5. Psychological/Psychoanalytic Approach – is based on the
work of Sigmund Freud. The text is seen as a reflection of the
authors’ mind and personality.
6. Deconstructionist Approach – argues that because there is
no single meaning of any word, there is no single meaning of
any text. All text have multiple, valid meanings because
readers will interpret words differently than the writers
intended them. It focused on the deconstruction (or tearing
down) of any meaning within a text by a variety of readers.
7. 7. Readers-Response
Approach – argues that the
meaning of a text is
dependent upon the readers’
response to it.
8. Sociological Approach
– focuses on the belief and
values of a s society and
how they are reflected in a
text
Types of Sociological
Approach
a. Marxist Approach – it
focuses understanding how
power, politics and money
play a role in literary
societies and characters.
b. Feminist Approach –
focuses on the roles
positions and influences of
women within literary texts.
8. 9. Gender Approach – analyze the influence and
representation of sexuality (mainly “ queer
sexuality”) within literary texts.
10. Postcolonial Approach – it is new and
emerging type of literary criticism. It is a type of
cultural criticism that focuses on literary text
produced in places that were, at one time, under the
influence of European colonial rule.
9. 2. Feminist theory –
focuses on the roles of
gender in literature,
exploring issues related
to womens’ experiences,
representation and
societal expectations.
10. 3. Postmodernism –
challenges traditional narrative
structure and questions
objective reality.
4. Eco criticism – explore the
relationship between literature
and environment.

sexuality and gender are portrayed in
