The ApplyTexas application for Texas public universities covers testing scores, recommendations, extracurricular activities, essays, and transcripts. For testing, it looks at highest ACT or SAT scores. Recommendations should be from teachers who can address the applicant's strengths. Extracurriculars include both in-school and out-of-school activities. Essays allow applicants to share what makes them unique and any special circumstances. Transcripts are reviewed for challenging coursework and continuity in subjects.

 MAJOR A student’s concentrated field of study
 DEGREE A certificate of completion of a required number of course
credit hours
 PUBLIC SCHOOL A college or university that receives the build of its
funding from state tax dollars
 PRIVATE SCHOOL A college or university that is funded through
student tuition, donations, endowments, and gifts
 COMMUNITY COLLEGE Two-year school with programs for associate

 TEXAS COMMON APPLICATION (ApplyTexas) The application used by all Texas public schools and
some private schools
 TRANSCRIPT A record of a student’s courses and grades, including their overall GPA
 RECOMMENDED HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM A minimum of 24 high school credits; required to graduate
from any Texas high school
 AP Advance Placement; advanced courses that give students the ability to test out of a certain subject
and obtain college credit
 CREDIT HOURS Credit given for successfully completing college classes. Most degrees require at least
120 credit hours.
 TUITION The cost of a college university or university class
 SCHOLARSHIP Financial assistance that does not require repayment; often awarded based on a
student’s abilities or need
 LOANS Financial assistance that must be repaid
 GRANTS Financial assistance that does not require repayment
 FAFSA Free Application For Federal Student Aid; must be filled
 EFC Expected Family Contribution; the amount that a student’s family is expected to contribute toward the

amount of financial aid awarded

admissions office. With this type of admissions, the earlier an application is
submitted, the better.
 EARLY DECISION A student makes a binding commitment when they apply that if they
are accepted, they will attend
 EARLY ACTION If a student sends their application in by an early deadline, they will be
notified of their application status in December rather than May
 WAITLISTED An applicant is not denied, but will be admitted if a space becomes
available
 ACADEMIC ADVISOR A faculty member in a student’s field of study who assists in
building their course schedules and degree plans
 REGISTRAR The record keeper at a college or university
 FINANCIAL AID COUNSELOR A university staff member assigned to handle a
student’s financial aid case and provide advice
 RETENTION RATE The percentage of students who start at a school and go on to the
next year(s) at the same college
 GRADUATION RATE The percentage of students who graduate from a 4-year
university in 6 years or less
 EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Activities which are not part of a student’s
