Holocaust Survivor Groups and Memory Work in Arizona and Israel
The commemorative events marking the Holocaust are celebrated in the Jewish
communities in Israel and around the world as Yom HaShoah, an event where solemn songs are
sung, traditional candles for the dead lit, and speeches presented in the synagogue. Holocaust
Remembrance days have evolved as a public programs and include Holocaust survivors who
present their testimonies. Within Jewish communities, the leaders of the community consider
survivors and their children as a special-needs subgroup. The respect and honor afforded them
during Yom HaShoah is only one way Jewish communities tend to this group. More
importantly, Jewish communities set up special institutions to help survivors and their children
cope with life and traumatic issues that emerge as a result of having either been victims of
extreme cruelty or related to those who experienced brutality. In this essay, I am interested in
the ways in which survivor groups function to create a specific survivor culture by doing an
ethnographic study of survivor group meetings. I
ask
how
survivor
culture
deals
with
the
memory
of
suffering
and
how
they
reconcile
their
present
lives
with
the
past.
This
type
of
study
will
focus
on
what
traits
and
practices
aid
in
survivor
adaptability
and
which
traits
are
maladaptive
(Kottak
and
Kozaitis
2008:18).
Like other major cities in the U.S., Jewish Family and Children’s Services provides
services for aging Holocaust survivors. These community services help survivors in numerous
ways from finding them places to live, providing them with social case workers to help them find
the care they need and through counseling and group support. This year I have been interning
with the Holocaust survivor support group at the Southern Arizona JFCS located on 5th and
Columbus in Tucson. My experience in working with the group allows me to engage in
“participant observation” to research and write about the ways survivors deal with the past and to

better understand the “core values” of this post-Holocaust subculture (Scupin 2012:7).
Survivors meet in a room every Tuesday for conversation, and sometimes a speaker will
come to the group. The group is led by a trained counselor named Barbara, who although she is
not Jewish, seems to manage the survivors’ needs well as they share whatever is on their mind.
Overall, Barbara maintains strict boundaries from the survivors, adding to the conversation in
rare instances. To a certain extent, the reason is that she just can’t get a word in! The survivors
are quite talkative. Barbara keeps at a distance, but is there to give information and guide
survivors in the programming of their events.

Identity encompasses one's memories, experiences, relationships, and values that create a sense of self over time. Identity is constructed through social interactions and develops across different domains like family, gender, ethnicity, and religion at various stages of life. Erik Erikson proposed that people experience crises during life stages that influence identity development. James Marcia identified four identity statuses - identity achievement, moratorium, foreclosure, and diffusion - based on whether an individual has experienced a crisis and made commitments in important identity domains. Studying identity statuses can provide insight into how individuals develop their sense of self, including their religious or ethnic identity.

The purpose of autobiography is: the recreation, the nostalgic or not-so-nostalgic closure, or the simple delineation, of a life. This is without doubt, at least for me. But it is also much else and many writers describe the purpose of autobiography and of its several country-cousins: memoirs, diary or journal writing and even essays and poetry. A search for some clearer understanding of the autobiographer’s identity is a commonly found aim in the now massive literature on the subject of why autobiographers write. For some autobiographers of a scientific bent their work is animated by the purpose of proving that their lives are ultimately purposeless. The philosopher Alfred North Whitehead states, with his tongue in his cheek in his book The Function of Reason, that the examination of such autobiographies would constitute an interesting subject for study. My autobiography, in contrast, is animated by a significant sense of purpose and by a meta-narrative in which I do not possess an incredulity. Mine would not therefore be among those that Whitehead might find interesting in that context.

object of marked discourse.” Assuming that the
co-occurrence of both Jewish and American
identities is seen as “atypical” (Weber 2004).

when he makes “certain utterances” for
example, saying “Put some schmaltz [personal
warmth] into your oral reports” (Weber 2004),
to a group of his protestant students.

specific objects like a mezuzah (tubular prayer
container) that he has hung on his front door at
home.

others.
» Weber (2004) states, “As does any „aspect of
[total] identity‟ my Jewish identity also
occurs…in dialogue with others when I must
respond by formulating appropriate utterances in
reply to their utterances…by and through a
multitude of communication practices, then, I
„do being‟ Jewish.”

when he experienced adversity as well as triumph,
proving his dual identity as being both validated, as
well as uncommon.
» For example, when he was “eight years old and
watching Rawhide on the living room TV on Friday
night. In the episode, Shelley Berman guest stars as
Mendel, a Jewish peddler in the Old West. In one
scene, Mendel blesses the Sabbath wine sinuously
chanting guttural words familiar to me. Proud tears
trickle down my cheeks-I had chanted the same
words myself 90 minutes earlier at my family‟s
Sabbath dinner. It‟s unbelievable-never before have
I seen the life experience of a Jew appear on
screen!” (Weber 2004).
8. » Then, when he was “fourteen years old, in French II, we
bait the teacher at least a couple of times a week, to
move her out of subject matter and into more enjoyable
conversation. Today, a classmate baits me: we learn that
le bijoux means “jewel,” and Craig hisses, “That‟s „be
Jew‟ Dave,” and sadness heats up my face” (Weber
2004).
» Weber ends the article telling of his father‟s passing in
2002. When he was nine years old he received his first
siddur [book of prayers], which he located on the shelf
after forty years. He opens it and writes inside the front
cover, “My beloved father, Daniel Aaron Weber, passed
away on 27 August 2002…He was a great man.” Then
he proceeds to skim the book and comes across this
influential note he wrote when he was young, “My name
is David Weber, I am proud to be Jewish. I am a happy
little boy” (Weber 2004).
9. » Weber comes to the realization that his identity
is indeed exceptional. It may not be typical, and
without struggle, but what was important was
that he embrace it. And that is what he was able
to do.
» Weber was able to relate his experience in
learning to embrace his cultural identity through
recalling his experiences throughout life and
how each single event enabled his ability to
accept his “total individual identity.”
