Appiah “Making Conversation Kwame Appiah is uniquely qualified and has the credibility to discuss the concept of global tribe having travelled and studied in different parts of the world. Appiah as a member of the global community argues that all human beings should strive to cultivate a sense of cultural relativism. This will enable them to respect other people’s ways of life and uphold mutual respect. The ability to respect other cultures, beliefs and practices is entrenched in the ability to hold conversation. In this, Appiah asserts “conversation doesn’t have to lead to consensus about anything, especially not values; it’s enough that it helps people get used to one another” (82). The author points out that we do not necessary have to agree on key cultural aspects but we can agree certain values of humanity that should be universal and apply to all. Appiah argues that humans are all part of the same group/community. We all have obligations to one another. People should take the value of particular human life seriously (Appiah 59). This is because all people in the world are linked together into one global community by the values we share. To support his point, Appiah shares how different people from different countries, cultures and ethnicities live and interact in India. These people living, studying and working in one area make a place cosmopolitan and helps prove to people we are the same despite differences. Living in a cosmopolitan area is essential to help people learn more about world around them. Appiah writes “What academics sometimes dub ‘ cultural otherness’ should prompt neither piety nor consternation” (62).
