This document outlines the importance of dialogue between civilizations and cultures, especially through higher education. It discusses how dialogue can help replace prejudices with understanding by promoting knowledge of other cultures through media, education, and technology. The speaker emphasizes that Islam supports freedom of religion and cooperation between faiths based on shared universal values. Higher education institutions are urged to develop educational frameworks that foster tolerance, recognition of differences, and mutual understanding between people of all backgrounds.
History indicates that before the coming of modern globalization, the Muslims
had their own version of globalization. During the Muslim era of globalization
which coincides with the Golden Age of the Muslims, the West benefited
immensely from the scholastic works produced by Muslim scientists and
scholars. Modern globalization which started during the era of Western
colonization of the East has now gone to every nook and cranny of the world.
The usage of internet and other modern electronic media directly or indirectly
has speed up the process of transporting modern globalization to the world
community. Modern globalization has brought about radical change in aims of
education; it has marginalized local culture and language; it has caused brain
drain everywhere in the world. Muslims, it seems, are perceiving globalization as
identical to re-colonization. This paper intends to explore and investigate how
modern globalization heralded by the west is different from Muslim
globalization in the past.
Islam Nusantara: Religion Dialectic and Cultural for Pluralism-Democratic Soc...Ali Murfi
Seeing the face of Islamic nowadays, Islam Nusantara is very needed, because its characteristic proposes solution in moderate ways, not right or left extreme, always balance, inclusive, tolerance, can live in harmonization with other religion followers and can accept the democracy well. Islam Nusantara is delivered through in friendly, harmonize and respectful way, so that it does not suppress the culture. Islam Nusantara is neither a new religion nor a new school, but Islam Nusantara is the face of Islam in Southeast Asia. The teachings of Islam are implemented in a society in which the mental and character are influenced by the structure of the islands. Islam Nusantara's characteristic can be formulated in operational form as the basic of life for the pluralism and nationality society so that it can be defined as a process of Islam Nusantara actualization through local wisdom. In the level of practice, it can be done by inserting Islam Nusantara's values, not only in knowledge's source and structure but also in society's morality. Those values are moderate, tolerance, balance and inclusive.

Session: Interfaith Partnerships: Addressing the Roots of Conflict: Case Studies in Applying Universal Principles and Shared Values
Speaker: Dr. Estrella Babano: Former Regional Director, Department of Education, Republic of the Philippines
Emotions Healing Beyond Medicine: Finding Home . Where is home for individual like me, you ? for community, culture and even here today in America at 21st ?
This paper makes a case for further studies on the contribution of peace museums to interfaith dialogue debate. We argue that there is a lacuna in the study on the contribution of peace museums to the interfaith dialogue debate. The development of community peace museums in Kenya, in predominantly Christian communities, and the use of traditional religio-cultural artefacts in peace education and peace building is a case of
interfaith dialogue worth documenting. With religious conflict threatening to tear the fabric of society apart, the question of interfaith dialogue is now paramount in the search for sustainable peace and development.
Harmonization of inter-cultural inter-religious and inter-ethnic relations: t...TANKO AHMED fwc
‘Humans are primarily concerned with preserving themselves in a dangerous world … made doubly dangerous by human factors’. Culture, ethnicity and religion constitute the '3D' foundation of loyalty, identity, and duty respectively, in the generality of human affairs. The dimension of human advancement seeks for harmony to harness resources for the betterment and general well-being of all. The cross-functional complexities of this triad therefore necessitate the emergence, and intervention of enabling civil societies to cater for ‘weaknesses’ of traditional governance. This paper attempts to define and establish the parameters for harmonization of inter-cultural, -ethnic and –religious relations by universal role of civil societies. It proffers ways and means of achieving these and concludes that humanity needs to harness both human and natural resources for progress and also to counter impending disasters of human and natural dimensions.

Developing cultural dexterity leads to cultural competence. Cultural competence — the ability to work effectively across a variety of cultures — begins as a conversation among people who see the world differently.
Developing dexterity with diversity does not just happen. We need social and educational experiences plus reflection on the experience to go beyond reliance on stereotypes. The Universal Declaration makes it clear that each individual must acknowledge not only “otherness” in all its forms, but also the plurality of his or her own identity, within societies that are themselves plural.
Understanding diversity embraces acceptance, respect, and empathy. It means we understand that each individual is unique and multi-faceted. This means understanding each other despite our differences. This is the most important dialogue we can have in the Boardrooms and University classrooms around the world.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

1. IAU International Conference 2009 on the Role of Higher Education in Fostering the
Cukture of Dialogue and Understanding
Plenary Session II Instilling the Culture of Dialogue in Higher Education
Address by Saleh Hashem, Secretary General, Association of Arab Universities, Jordan
Notre Dame University, Lebanon, 4-6 November 2009
Honorable Guests,
On behalf of the Association of Arab Universities, I extend my warm greetings to everyone attending the IAU 2009 International Conference on The Role of Higher Education in Fostering the Culture of Dialogue and Understanding.
I also seize this opportunity to thank all who devoted their time and efforts in preparing and organizing this event wishing your efforts to be fruitful.
The call for Dialogue of civilization has become one of the features of the twentieth century. As you know, the call for a quot;
dialogue of civilizationsquot;
was a substitute to rethink the idea of the quot;
clash of civilizationsquot;
. It was adopted by western educators following the end of the cold war between East and West.
Many international organizations and bodies supported such initiatives in both the Islamic world and the west. The focus was on the importance of eliminating disparities through a better in-depth, extensive and comprehensive knowledge and through investigation in order to erase negative stereotypes and prejudices, which were promoted by the media, and some political and civic organizations who considered the others as source of threat or enemy. The need was to concentrate on employment of the media, school curricula, information technology and modern communication to achieve a more realistic and neutral vision for the habits, thoughts, behaviors and practices of the others.
The convergence of civilizations is considered a landmark in mankind history of civilization. It is for sure an inevitable fate that there is no way avoid. Islam as a religion and a civilization is against centralization of a dominant culture. On the contrary, it encourages that the world becomes a forum of civilizations that interacts and cooperates to strengthen the common bases of universal values.
Islam in its spirit and essence guarantees freedom of religions. In fact Qur’an requires Muslims to believe in all the prophets and forbids to believe in some and not to believe in others. Thus Qur’an clearly accepts plurality of religions and ways of life and different laws and treats it as a challenge for humanity to live and coexist with tolerance towards each other and strengthen forces of peace and moral order. Values and moral order is much more basic than differences of faith and devotion. So Qur’an in no way adopts hostile attitude towards other religions
The world must shape a tolerant universe philosophy which derives its principles from all different cultures by laying the basis for a non-violent resolution of controversies. Islam contains a great spiritual heritage, as demonstrated by the Universal Islamic Declaration of Human Rights of UNESCO in 1981. It was proven that the philosophy of human rights does not conflict with the heavenly religions, but it conflicts only with their fanatical interpretations. Religions, such as Islam and Christianity focus on and promote human dignity, and hereupon there is no contradiction between the rights of God and human rights if we understand religion in a true and reasonable way.
Thus, the intellectuals, clerics, scholars and educators in east and west should continue their efforts towards enhancing the recognition of differences between religions and doctrines aiming at achieving mutual understanding through a genuine receptivity to other viewpoints. They should also work to reject intolerance or forced confrontations. New educational policies and community measurements should be set to help coexistence and mutual understanding so as to achieve our goals through a rational perspective. We need to create a society that shares the values of love, tolerance and recognition of the other. Here comes the role of our educational institutions at all levels to develop educational frameworks and plans to help in the process of formulation of our educational systems within this concept.
May God help us for the benefit of human rights and dignity. Thank you for your time and I wish your meeting all success.
