The internet has spawned access to unprecedented levels of information. For chemists, the increasing number of resources they can utilize to access chemistry-related information provides them a valuable path to discovery of information, which was previously limited to commercial and, therefore, constrained resources. The diversity of information continues to expand dramatically and, coupled with an increasing awareness for quality, curation and improved tools for focused searches, chemists can now find valuable information within a few seconds using a few keystrokes. Shifting to publicly-available resources offers great promise to the benefits of science and society yet brings with it increasing concern from commercial entities. There are three related projects aimed at standardizing open access metadata: 1) The Open Access Spectrum guide published by PLOS, SPARC, and OASPA which identifies the components of open access on a spectrum from fully open to closed. 2) The Vocabularies for Open Access project by Jisc which aims to develop consensus vocabularies for key open access terms. 3) A NISO initiative to develop standardized metadata and indicators for open access status at the article level to provide information on access and reuse rights. The HRP initiative (HRP) is a joint research and development effort to advance the understanding, recognition and management of high-risk plaque for the benefit of multiple stakeholders in the healthcare system. As the primary underlying cause of heart attacks, high-risk, or vulnerable plaque is the number one cause of death in the Western world. There are currently no methods of screening, diagnosis or treatment for high-risk plaque.
The HRP initiative leverages recent advances in biology and information technology to design and optimize a care-cycle for high-risk plaque, promising to reduce morbidity, mortality and cost associated with cardiovascular disease. This Initiative is being led by the world’s foremost scientists in the fields of cardiology, pathology, and imaging, and is made possible through funding by leading pharmaceutical and medical technology entities.
HRP takes advantages of semantic web technologies for physician and researcher-lead data analysis and data interoperability. One of the key applications is a web tool linking patient demographics, clinical chemistries, physical measurements and cardiovascular imaging modalities. This empowers scientists to rapidly compare multiple clinical parameters to find patients of interest, assisting greatly in defining high-risk plaque.

Sitations are the way that researchers communicate how
their work builds on and relates to the work of others and
they can be used to trace how a discovery spreads and is
used by researchers in different disciplines and countries.
Creating a truly comprehensive map of scholarship,
however, relies on having a curated machine-readable
database of citation information, where the provenance of
every citation is clear and reusable. The Initiative for Open
Citations (I4OC), a campaign launched on 6 April 2017,
sought to make publisher members of Crossref aware that
they could open up the citation metadata they already give
to Crossref simply by asking them. With the support of
major publishers and the endorsement of funders and other
organisations, more than 50% of citation data in Crossref
is now freely available, up from less than 1% before the
campaign. This provides the foundation of a well-structured,
open database of literally millions of datapoints that anyone
can query, mine, consume and explore. The presenter will
discuss the aims of the campaign, the new innovative
services that are already using the data, what more still
needs to be done and how you can support the initiative.

Breast cancer: Post menopausal endocrine therapy
Breast cancer in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) status is a common and complex condition that necessitates a multifaceted approach to management. HR+ breast cancer means that the cancer cells grow in response to hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. This subtype is prevalent among postmenopausal women and typically exhibits a more indolent course compared to other forms of breast cancer, which allows for a variety of treatment options.
Diagnosis and Staging
The diagnosis of HR+ breast cancer begins with clinical evaluation, imaging, and biopsy. Imaging modalities such as mammography, ultrasound, and MRI help in assessing the extent of the disease. Histopathological examination and immunohistochemical staining of the biopsy sample confirm the diagnosis and hormone receptor status by identifying the presence of estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) on the tumor cells.
Staging involves determining the size of the tumor (T), the involvement of regional lymph nodes (N), and the presence of distant metastasis (M). The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system is commonly used. Accurate staging is critical as it guides treatment decisions.
Treatment Options
Endocrine Therapy
Endocrine therapy is the cornerstone of treatment for HR+ breast cancer in postmenopausal women. The primary goal is to reduce the levels of estrogen or block its effects on cancer cells. Commonly used agents include:
Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs): Tamoxifen is a SERM that binds to estrogen receptors, blocking estrogen from stimulating breast cancer cells. It is effective but may have side effects such as increased risk of endometrial cancer and thromboembolic events.
Aromatase Inhibitors (AIs): These drugs, including anastrozole, letrozole, and exemestane, lower estrogen levels by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, which converts androgens to estrogen in peripheral tissues. AIs are generally preferred in postmenopausal women due to their efficacy and safety profile compared to tamoxifen.
Selective Estrogen Receptor Downregulators (SERDs): Fulvestrant is a SERD that degrades estrogen receptors and is used in cases where resistance to other endocrine therapies develops.
Combination Therapies
Combining endocrine therapy with other treatments enhances efficacy. Examples include:
Endocrine Therapy with CDK4/6 Inhibitors: Palbociclib, ribociclib, and abemaciclib are CDK4/6 inhibitors that, when combined with endocrine therapy, significantly improve progression-free survival in advanced HR+ breast cancer.
Endocrine Therapy with mTOR Inhibitors: Everolimus, an mTOR inhibitor, can be added to endocrine therapy for patients who have developed resistance to aromatase inhibitors.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is generally reserved for patients with high-risk features, such as large tumor size, high-grade histology, or extensive lymph node involvement. Regimens often include anthracyclines and taxanes.
