How do you measure API success? What KPIs do APIs need? What mistakes should I avoid? Find out what you should, and shouldn't, be measuring as part of your API program in this Business of APIs Conference NYC talk. Dive into a breadth of API metrics, the 6 keys to better API metrics, and the traps to beware of (the important do's and don'ts). Also real-world API case studies show who measures what.
What do you mean by “API as a Product”?Nordic APIs
You may have heard the term “API Product.” But what does it mean? In this talk I will introduce the concept and explain the benefits and challenges of transforming your organization to view your APIs as measurable products that expose your companies capabilities creating agility, autonomy, and acceleration. Traditional product manufacturers create new product and launch them into the marketplace and then measure value; we will teach you to view your APIs in the same way. Concepts covered in this presentation will be designing APIs with Design Thinking, funding your product, building teams, marketing your API, managing your marketplace, and measuring success.
APIs have revolutionized how companies build new marketing channels, access new customers, and create ecosystems. Enabling all this requires the exposure of APIs to a broad range of partners and developers—and potential threats.

Digital transformation is on its way and the industry is required to adopt new concepts and techniques, like the Internet of things (IoT), Cloud and Enterprise Mobility. As a matter of that, new business models arise, which need to be evaluated by companies to not lose market shares and stay in touch with the competitors.
Gartner’s vision of Bi-modal IT seems to become more and more the reality, which besides all chances, also brings a lot of challenges companies have to deal with. One essential topic for implementing the ideas of Bi-modal IT is API Management – at least from our point of view. In addition, it is also a key enabler to define a solid strategy, in order to meet the challenges with respect to digital transformation.
APIs have seen a stellar growth over the last decade or so. API product managers help build the platform the right way, with requirements rationalization, design standards, style guides, public launch frameworks, measurements and a forward looking plan to grow the business of APIs. Pain Points In API Development? They’re EverywhereNordic APIs
There’s an inherent tension for organizations doing API development: how to keep both your API developers as well as your infrastructure happy, at the same time. Decoupling front-end and back-end development allows parallel development, and helps keep your front-end, middle-end, and back-end efforts working asynchronously. This speeds progress, but requires far more – and far better – collaboration to be successful. Even an independent developer working with APIs requires good collaboration tools.
In this talk, Abhinav Asthana will provide tips on how to improve in API development using collaboration tools like executable API descriptions, API mock servers, and documentation. He will include specific examples of how companies (such as VMware, Coursera, and AMC Theatres) have used collaboration to attain more agile development, to onboard developers, and to ensure input from all participants/stakeholders.
With the ever increasing growth of mobile applications and API technologies the topics of identity management, authentication and authorisation are as important as ever. The technologies mean that those responsible for identity management and security increasingly have more to consider when deploying and enforcing security. With rapid time to market demands from the business there is much to consider when delivering an open but secure environment for the business and their users.
This session will look at some of the considerations and issues faced in designing and delivering IdM in this emerging space. We will look at how topics such as OAuth, OpenID connect and single sign on play their part in these policies and how governance plays a key role alongside security to protect the environment.
Sign up for our beta today! http://datadipity.com/register
Datadipity reduces time to launch by promoting the “Virtualized API stack” with a set of APIs in place, there is no need to architect complex distributed systems. 3rd party APIs are leveraged so that the architecture can be reduced to one code base. This reduces development time. Usability is much easier to maintain during beta release and user acceptance changes are easier to apply.

Ole Lensmar, co-creator of soapUI and Chief Architect at SmartBear Software, gave this presentation at STARWEST 2012. We are working, he says, in the "Golden Age of APIs."
APIs used to be a technical implementation detail reserved for developers and architects. In the Web age, APIs make more business sense than ever before. This presentation gives a ring side view of How to Craft Business Strategy around APIs.
PayPal operates in 200+ countries. The complexity of region specific requirements and a disjointed offering led to a situation where PayPal Checkout API product suite got polluted with many overlapping capabilities and an API documentation that was hard to comprehend, incomplete and inconsistent making the integration experience much harder than it needed to be.
There was a strong desire to act upon the feedback that we have been hearing from our merchants and developer community to make a turn for the better.
This talk aims to explore
> When is the right time for organization to rethink their API and launch a new version.
> Considerations that go into creating a new version of an API that is so central to the way thousands of developers and merchants integrate with PayPal.
> Explore challenges in design, adoption, migration both internally and externally within the organization.
Architecting your platform to meet 2012 mobile and web development standards is one of the best ways you can to enable your company to meet the demands of today's competitive markets. Building product in a platform way also helps your business prepare for disruptive forces that you cannot possibly predict.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
