APEDA was formed in 1986 as a government agency to promote the export of agricultural and processed food products from India. It is headquartered in New Delhi and operates under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. APEDA's main functions are to develop agricultural industries, export processed foods, provide financial assistance to farmers and groups, register exporters, set standards for products, and promote Indian products globally. It oversees the export of a wide range of agricultural commodities and food products. In 2017-18, APEDA facilitated $38 billion in agricultural exports from India.
