Listing your sources in a Works Cited page is only one part of the citation process; the other part is making references to your sources in the body of your paper. The purpose of the in-text citation is to inform your audience when you are making a reference to someone else's ideas, words, works, or other information you used to support your writing.
According to the MLA Handbook: "References in the text must clearly point to specific sources in the list of works cited" (214). This means that for every reference you make in your paper there should be a corresponding citation in your Works Cited page, and vice versa.
MLA formatting uses the author-page style when producing in-text citations, meaning that you should have information about the author and the page number when making reference in your paper. Here are several examples of the author-page style, followed by the citation as it would appear in your Works Cited:

Assignment 3b Threats Defense ArgumentDue in Week 10 and wo.docxdanielfoster65629
Ā
Assignment 3b: Threats Defense Argument
Due in Week 10 and worth 100 points
The information you provided in your presentation on Threats to the Global Environment has led to productive debates at
the UN General Assembly! There are now questions about prioritizing the issues at hand. Some of the countries are
challenging your recommendations and questioning your reasons for not including the issues they believe are priority.
From the initial eight global threats, there are four remaining threats that you did not choose in the list of major global
issues. Review the list of topics and reflect on two that you did not use in last weekās assignment. Defend your reason for
considering these topics lower in priority than the ones in your presentation.
Energy sources Civil war
Globalization Poor health of entire populations
Lack of educational opportunities Cultural taboos
Inappropriate uses of technology Climate change
The completed version of this assignment will consist of the following:
1. Select two threats from the list above that you did not use in your Assignment 3a presentation.
2. Create a minimum two-page document in which you outline a counterargument for the two threats you selected:
Write an opening statement describing the perception of each threat.
Write one paragraph for each threat (two paragraphs total) in which you give three reasons to explain
why the threat is less of a priority to the global environment than the four you selected in Assignment
3a. Support your reasons with at least three credible sources.
A conclusion statement for each threat.
3. Cite at least three credible sources excluding Wikipedia, dictionaries, and encyclopedias for your assessment. A
brief list of suggested resources has been provided at the end of the course guide.
The specific course learning outcome associated with this assignment is:
Examine the factors that account for why the growth in the worldās population can negatively affect the
global society
Grading for this assignment will be based on answer quality, logic/organization of the paper, and language and writing
skills, using the following rubric:
APA Formatting
This document has the summarized, high points of the APA format that all students need to be aware in writing papers academically. There are many more details and requirements in the APA than in this condensed version. Operation āBlue Starā is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as ādistorted thinkingā.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
Ā
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasnāt one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. Writing Prompt 1
What are all the steps we have
to take to get from a reasonably
well-developed draft to a
polished, academic draft?
3. Discuss
(and be sure to check out
page 509 of the Hacker
book: āPlacing Sources in
Conversationā)
4. Writing Prompt 2
What are the key differences
between MLA and APA styles?
List as many as you can think of.
APA = American Psychological
Association
5. Citing Sources in APA
APA recommends an author-date system of
citations.
1) The sources is introduced by a signal phrase
that includes the last name of the author followed
by the date of publication in parentheses.
2) The material being cited is followed by a
pages number in parentheses.
3) At the end of the paper, an alphabetized list of
references gives complete publication
information for the source.
6. Model signal phrases
In the words of Carmona (2004), ā. . . ā (p. 341).
As Yanovski and Yanovski (2002) have noted, ā. .
.ā (p. 7892).
Hoppin and Taveras (2004), medical
researchers, pointed out that ā. . .ā (p. 65).
ā . . .,ā claimed Critser (2003).
Researchers McDuffie et al (2003) have offered
a compelling case for this view: ā . . .ā (p. 73).
7. Good verbs for signal
phrases
admitted contended
reasoned
declared refuted
denied
argued
rejected asserted
emphasized reported
believed insisted
claimed
agreed
responded

thought

8. In text Citations
Yanovski and Yanovski (2002) reported that āthe
current state of the treatment for obesity is
similar to the state of the treatment of
hypertension several decades agoā (p. 600).
What do you notice about this citation? Is there
anything about it that surprises you?
9. Entry in List of References
Yanovski, S.Z., & Yanovski, J.A. (2002). Drug
therapy:
Obesity. The New England Journal of
Medicine, 346,
591-602
10. Basic Format: Quotation
Critser (2003) noted that despite growing
numbers of overweight Americans, many health
care providers still āremain either in ignorance or
outright denial about the health danger to the
poor and the youngā (p. 5).
Despite the growing numbers of overweight
Americans, many health care providers still
āremain either in ignorance or outright denial
about the health danger to the poor and the
young (Critser, 2003, p. 5).
11. Basic Format: Paraphrase
Yanovski and Yanovski (2002) explained that
sibtramine suppresses appetite by blocking the
reuptake of the neurotransmitters serotonin and
norepinephrine in the brain (p. 594).
Sibtramine suppresses appetite by blocking the
reuptake of the neurotransmitters serotonin and
norepinephrine in the brain ( Yanovski &
Yanovski, 2002, p. 594).
12. Work with 2 authors
Give the name of both authors in signal phrases
or parentheses each time you cite the work.
According to Sothern and Gordon
(2003), āEnvironmental factors may contribute as
much as 80% to the cause of childhood obesityā
(p. 104).
Obese children often engage in limited physical
activity (Sothern & Gordon, 2003, p. 104).
13. Work with 3 to 5 authors
Identify all authors in the signal phrase or the
parentheses the first time you cite the source.
In 2003, Berkowitz, Wadden, Tershakovec, and
Cronquist concluded, āSibutramineā¦must be
carefully monitored in adolescents, as in
adults, to control increases in {blood pressure
and] pulse rateā (p. 1811).
In subsequent citations, use the first authorās
name followed by āet al.ā in either the signal
phrase or parentheses.
14. Personal Communication
Personal interviews, memos, letters, email and
similar unpublished communications should be
cited in the text only, not in the reference list (this
is definitely different from MLA). Use the first
initial with the last name in parentheses (F.
Johnson, personal communication, October 20,
2013).
For this research paper, please adapt the MLA
works cited reference for personal interview in
the APA style (year right after name, etc).
15. Other examples
Like six or more authors, work
with an unknown
author, organization as
author, etc., see pages 513515.
16. List of References
Instead if calling it a Works
Cited, APA calls this page at the
end References.
For a sample References
page, see p. 548 of the Hacker
book.
17. Guidelines for listing
authors
To see how to list works by a single
author, organization as author, article
in a journal, articles in a
newspaper, book with an author and
an editor, article in an online
magazine, short work from a
website, podcast, email, government
document see listing on 495 and
then go to the appropriate example.
18. Manuscript. Running Head
Running head: YOU MUST DO THIS IN ALL
CAPS.
Upper left corner, every page. Title page also has
the words āRunning Headā
20. Author Note
This paper was prepared for English
101, Section 3873, taught by Instructor Ulferts.
Appears at the bottom of page.
21. Abstract
Separate page
An abstract is a 100-150 word paragraph that
provides readers with a quick overview of your
essay. It should express your main idea and your
key points; it might also briefly suggest any
implications or applications of the research you
discuss in the paper. See page 541 for an
example.
22. Extra Credit Opportunities
Turn the final paper in a day early ā Wednesday
by 5:30 p.m. This will get you an extra 2.5 points.
(so if you were going to get an 89 (B+) you would
get a 91.5 (A-).
The 90 percent challenge. If 90 percent of the
class fills out the end-of-course survey by
Thursday at midnight (so I can see the results on
Friday) then the entire class will get an extra 2.5
points on the final paper.
