Notes On Motivation Theory And Motivation
Chapter 2: Literature review
2.1. Motivation theory
Types of motivation
According to Pritchard and Ashwood (2008: 6), motivation is the process used to allocate
energy to maximize the satisfaction of needs. It requires that one have a reason to do something.
Well know researchers in this area Ryan and Deci (2010) believe that a person, who feels no
drive or inspiration to act, can therefore be characterized as unmotivated, while someone who is
energized toward a goal can be defined as motivated. People may also experience differing levels
and types of motivation based on their individual backgrounds, which means that they vary not only
in their amount of motivation, but also in the trend of that motivation (Ryan and Deci, 2000).
Different things motivate people who come from different social, cultural, economic and/or
financial backgrounds, or who have received different education. An employee s motives, socio
economic background and value system will have an effect on how they work, as well as influence
the outcome of their performance (Wyk and Erasmus, 2003: 315).
Many researchers have worked in the field of motivation over the years, and developed different
theories. Maslow s Hierarchy of needs theory proposes that an individual s most basic needs must
be met before they will develop higher level desires (Goble, 1970). Maslow created the term
metamotivation to explain the motivations of those people, which go beyond the extent of their
basic needs and instead

Piaget s Theory Of Cognitive Development
There are some significant theories which is beneficial even today. Researchers still utilize and
take advantage from some of them and do their researches based upon these theories. Piaget s
theory of Cognitive development is one of them. While there are some benefits and advantages to
use this theory to explain cognitive development, there are some problems showed up about this
theory over time. This essay examines problems with Piaget s theory. Firstly explains theory, than
focuses on what the results of the research are about problems and why they are become problem
for Piaget s theory.
Piaget s theory of cognitive development focuses on children s thinking differs from adults.
According to him this is the reason why child has less knowledge than an adult. He gave some
problems to children about deductive logic, visual perspective, cognitive ability, etc. Each problem
were testing different and specific mental abilities. By looking at problem s result,he decided ...

Piaget s theory is still hugely respected in the psychological community, his theory has greatly
influence researches in education. Theory of cognitive development provides a detailed account,
but there are still some problems about Piaget s cognitive theory in terms of take in consideration
cultur, proper measuring cognitive abilities and age norms. Children s cognitive development skills
can be developed and vary no matter what their age and stage is. Culture has huge effect on
cognitive development. In some cultures, children developed fastly but an another culture
development can be slow. Measuring skills not based on if children can solve problems or not, it

Acheta Domesticus Lab Report
For this lab 6 male Acheta domesticus were isolated in plastic containers, each was placed in a
container that was 5 cm height and had 5.5 cm radius. Each of these containers was punctured
with 10 15 minuscule holes for breathing on the lid and 5 8 holes on the sides. Inside of each
container a damp paper towel was placed on the bottom and 2 pieces of food were placed on the
paper towel. The Acheta domesticus were kept isolated in their personal containers for 7 days. At
the end of these 7 days we split the 6 A. domesticus into 3 groups of 2. One of the two was marked
with a paint pen, this marked male was the intruder . The remaining food was removed from the
containers. The intruder is then placed into the container that holds the other

Global War On Terrorism And Terrorism
Global War On Terrorism
The attack executed in the United States on September 11, 2001 was one of the worst attacks and
acts of war ever seen in U.S. history. On that day 2,996 innocent people were killed, over 6,000
people were injured, and about $10 billion in structural and infrastructure damages was caused. The
cost added up to $3 trillion in total.
The Global War on Terrorismis a metaphor of war referring to the global military campaign led by
the United States of America. The war is a NATO operation being led by the U.S. Being a NATO
operation, it automatically brings more than 20 allies to the U.S. s side of the conflict. The U.S.
also has multiple non NATO allies in the War on Terror. The war has been ongoing for just over
15 years, and has been one of the longest wars in the history of the U.S. The location is global, of
course, it is in the name. The war is not set in just one location because of the fact that terrorists
operate in cells spread out the world, instead of one single army. A lot like how different street
gangs are spread throughout a city. Even though there is not a set location, most of the conflict is
centralized in the Middle East. Specifically the countries: Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Pakistan and
recently in Syria.
The main issue with terrorism is that it is a strategy which uses both intimidation and violence in
the pursuit of political, religious or ideological gain. Most acts of terrorism involve the killing of
innocent people

Parent-Child Relationship Essay
Parent Child Relationships The topic I have chosen for my paper is that of relationship between
parents and children. Some of the points that I will be discussing are child abuse, child neglect and
how it can affect a child and the relationship with the parents. A parent child relationship is a special
relationship that has a huge effect on the way that the child will turn out. This relationship is
formed through pregnancy, adoption, and step parenting. Parenting requires a great deal of
adaptation. The parents want to develop a strong bond with their child but they also want to
maintain a healthy marital relationship and adult friendships. Potential parents often ask themselves
what they will be like when they are parents and try... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another way that parents react may be slow or they may not even notice a need for action. That is
called asynchrony (according to Schaffer, 1977). In 1978 a group of researchers in infant
development at the University of Wisconsin demonstrated that mothers synchrony with their infants
needs prompts physiological responses. The infant s temperament may partially stem from the way
in which the mother handles the child. The child is affected by the way that they are treated even
when they are infants. Frank Perderson and his colleagues in 1977 conducted research on what the
link was between spouse relationship and parent infant relationship. Perderson and his colleagues
believed that the three units of interaction (mother father, mother child, father child) are interrelated
(according to Perderson 1977). This showed that when the wife and husband showed positive
interaction towards each other (smiling and affection) they then would show their infant affection.
When there was negative interaction between the wife and husband (verbal critic and blame) it
was strongly linked to negative affection shown to the infant by the father. A form of negative
interaction by a parent with their child is child neglect. Child neglect is when the parent of the
child fails to meet the child s basic physical or psychological needs. Child neglect is the most
common and most destructive form of child

Why The Grandmother In A Good Man Is Hard To Find
Similar to every character in any given work of literature, the grandmother from A Good Man is
Hard to Find, had several attributes, both pleasing and vexatious. Of all her many qualities, I
greatly valued her ability to consistently speak her mind, even in the face of danger. Never was
she shy to give way to her true emotions and allow those around her to view her perspective on
the events occurring within her life, a rarity in today s society. Additionally, it was made obvious
how deeply she cared for her familyin her desperate attempt to persuade The Misfit to return to the
good man she assumed he once was and therefore permit the family to safely escape the dangerous
predicament. Likewise, the grandmother was a Christian woman that... Show more content on

The felon presumes that the woman expects him to be moved by her compassionate words that
carry no true meaning; henceforth, The Misfit considers it be counterfeit empathy and concludes
that it was not her average disposition. Nevertheless, readers have no factual proof concerning the
godliness of the woman, for the story only occurs within a brief period of time in which they
cannot discern whether she was simply acting sympathetic to elude gunpoint. With this in mind, the
criminal suggests that the grandmother truly would have been a good woman if only she had lived
her entire life similar to how she behaved there in the face of

Waste Generation and Need for Waste Management
GEOGRAPHY WASTE GENERATION AND ITS MANAGEMENT DEFINATION OF WASTE
DEFINATION OF WASTE
Waste, or rubbish, trash, junk, garbage, depending on the type of material or the regional
terminology, is an unwanted or undesired material or substance. It may consist of the unwanted
materials left over from a manufacturing process (industrial, commercial, mining or agricultural
operations,) or from community and household activities. The material may be discarded or
accumulated, stored, or treated (physically, chemically, or biologically), prior to being discarded or
recycled. It is also used to describe something we use inefficiently or inappropriately.... Show more

Some solid waste can also be converted to a liquid waste form for disposal. It includes point source
and non point source discharges such as storm water and wastewater. Examples of liquid waste
include wash water from homes, liquids used for cleaning in industries and waste detergents.
Solid type:
Solid waste predominantly, is any garbage, refuse or rubbish that we make in our homes and other
places. These include old car tires, old newspapers, broken furniture and even food waste. They
may include any waste that is non liquid.
Hazardous type:
Hazardous or harmful waste are those that potentially threaten public health or the environment.
Such waste could be inflammable (can easily catch fire), reactive (can easily explode), corrosive
(can easily eat through metal) or toxic (poisonous to human and animals). In many countries, it is
required by law to involve the appropriate authority to supervise the disposal of such hazardous
waste. Examples include fire extinguishers, old propane tanks, pesticides, mercury containing
equipment (e.g, thermostats) and lamps (e.g. fluorescent bulbs) and batteries.
Organic type:
Organic waste comes from plants or animals sources. Commonly, they include food waste, fruit
and vegetable peels, flower trimmings and even dog poop can be classified as organic waste. They
are biodegradable (this means they are easily broken down by other organisms over time and turned
into manure). Many people turn their

The Geological Event of Volcanic Eruptions and the Disasters they Cause
In this report I plan to discuss the geological event of volcanic eruptions and the disasters they
cause. To me, this is a fascinating topic and timely seeing how the 19th anniversary of the eruption
of Mt. St. Helens is upon us. I hope to inform people of the mass destruction that is caused by the
eruption of a volcano. The scope of my report will be limited to: 1) describing what comes out of a
volcano, 2) explaining the seven different types of volcanoes, 3) explaining the five types of
volcanic eruptions, and 4) explaining the disasters they can cause people. The procedure for
completing this report first started by watching educational television ... Show more content on

Pyroclastic rocks can be erupted in two different ways: they can be airfall deposits or pyroclastic
flows.
There are seven different types of volcanoes: Submarine volcanoes; Ridges and vents; Shield
volcanoes; Lava plateaus and Flood basalts; Lave domes; Composite volcanoes; Cinder and Scoria
cones; and Calderas. Each of these volcanoes is found in different geographical locations and have
different eruptions. Along with different types of volcanoes, there are also different types of
eruptions. The five eruption types are: Pelean, Vulcanian, Strombolian, Hawaiian, and Icelandic.
These volcanoes have different levels of explosiveness, and their eruptions occur due to their
geographic location.
A volcanic hazard is destructive natural process that has a probability of reoccurring. Losses
from volcanoes include: people s lives, property, livestock, and the productive capacity of the
area. The factors of predicting volcanic activity are: the longer a volcano is inactive, the greater
the chances are for it to become active; eruptive behavior may change with time; and some hazards
are indirectly related to an eruption, making it difficult to forecast. Being informed of volcanoes in
your area and knowing cautionary steps can save your life. What Comes out of Volcanoes?
Volcanoes are dark windows to the interior of the Earth (Decker 104). Volcanic products are our
only direct samples of the Earth s composition from deeper

Religion Research Paper
Adherents of all the world s major faiths believe that their respective religions had a starring role
in the very creation of mankind. Luckily, it is unnecessary to verify any such claims to realize that
those very religions have played a major role in shaping mankind throughout history. Be it as a tool
through which to consolidate and administer power in the case of the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, a
call to arms to conquer the Iberian Peninsula and the storied Eastern Roman Empire in the case of
the Caliphs of Islam, and as a force that brought together people from different classes, languages,
and countries in the case of the Holy Crusades launched by the Roman Catholic Popes.

Coming to Secretary of State John Kerry s plan to establish an Office of Religious and Global
Affairs this is nothing short of belated. There is plenty of past legislation that serves as a building
block if not a precedent. It was, after all, all the way back in 1998 that the International Religious
Freedom Act (IRFA) was signed into law, leading to the state sanctioned promotion of religious
freedom overseas.
This is not, of course, to say that there are no potential problems with the creation of this office.
Primarily, the potential overestimation of the role of religion in global affairs. Even back in the 8th
century, evidence suggests that the Iberian Caliphate was no set up on account of pure religious
fervor but also as a result of personal ambitions, power politics, and geopolitical concerns. These
same factors, and many more, continue to play a role today. None should be overlooked through a
myopic viewing of the situation through the frame of religion alone.
If one were to assume that all terror is caused by people of the Islamic faith this may well lead to a
simplistic ban of Muslims which could ultimately exasperate the issue of terrorism instead of
addressing it. But a complete shift in thinking where the focus is suddenly shifted unto religion
alone is not what is being suggested.
John Kerry has been very clear in his intentions

The Ecology Of Commerce By Environmentalist Paul Hawken
Part I: Introduction
The Ecology of Commerce, written by Environmentalist Paul Hawken, is an insightful, although
daunting, look into economic and corporate sustainability. The first rule of sustainability is to align
with natural forces, or at least not try to defy them . This quote, spoken by Paul Hawken himself, is
a perfect demonstration of the major theme he carefully analyzes within the book. Economics and
the environment are two words that you often don t see in the same sentence, despite the fact that
the influence economics has contributes to the deterioration of our environment gravely.
Part II: Background and Thesis Paul Hawken studies the many faults of the economic practices
we adhere to globally. Whether or not we agree with his beliefs is a decision we as readers need to
make. While an understanding of the environmental impacts is evident, as well as the biological
changes it has put forth on humans, I question if individual change really makes a difference to the
environment and the overall way the economy works. Hawken demonstrates a clear explanation to
back up his statement of absolute resource destruction, but I believe he underestimates the change
that may need to be done. I strongly believe we have reached a point in time where individual
change is inadmissible, and in order to save our planet, large corporations and their accountability
should be questioned. A world without sustainability, or more importantly a world without economic
integrity,

The Sixties Exposed in Takin it to the Streets and The Dharma Bums
One cannot undertake any study of the 1960s in America without hearing about the struggles for
social change. From civil rights to freedom of speech, civil disobedience and nonviolent protest
became a central part of the sixties culture, albeit representative of only a small portion of the
population. As Mario Savio, a Free Speech Movement (FSM) leader, wrote in an essay in 1964:
The most exciting things going on in America today are movements to change America ( Takin it to
the Streets, 115). His essay is critical of those that maintain the status quo and oppose change in
America. It seems quite obvious that change has occurred as a result of the efforts ... Show more

The rebellion against automation and middle class prosperity of the sixties is portrayed in Kerouac
s The Dharma Bums. Ray and the other dharma bums lived on little money and enjoyed nature.
Ray traveled cross country hitchhiking and jumping on trains from California to North Carolina
and back more than once on only a few dollars and while at home in North Carolina for
Christmas he sat in the woods with his dog much of the time and preferred to sleep in a sleeping
bag outside on the porch rather than inside his mother s home. This love of nature and desire to
live a very meager lifestyle in opposition to the working class prosperity seems to be more in
opposition to the changing culture, which was becoming more automated and industry driven, than
it was trying to illicit change. Regarding automation and middle class prosperity, it seems that
Kerouac and others feared the loss of nature to industry as well as one s time to be able to enjoy
nature.
The fight against automation was however, somewhat subservient to the goal of social change
regarding individual rights. The civil rights movement sought changes to the system of racial
injustice. Resistance to this movement helped bring about the FSM and the fight for one s rights to
free speech and assembly. The FSM was a movement dedicated to promoting equality and individual
rights, yet it maintained the

Example Of Endgame Theory
Opening Theory this commonly refers to a consensus or a repertoire of common chess openings
that have been analyzed line per line and are proven to be effective. Opening theory involves
multiple lines of one opening (Hooper and Whyld, 1992).
Middlegame Theory often refers to maxims or principles applicable to the middlegame. There are
few universally applicable principles (Hooper and Whyld, 1992).
Endgame Theory refers to the maxims or principles applicable to the endgame. Endgame theory
involves the review of passed games and application of concepts obtained from reviewing these
games into similar positions (Hooper and Whyld, 1992).

A clear thought process is described in the book, an ideal thought process for developing
calculating skills and the creation of an analysis tree. It is also discussed that in every game there
is always one critical position in which the slightest edge in accurate calculation can change the
flow of a game (Gormally, 2010).
Modern Chess Openings: 13th Edition The third part of chess theory is the opening theory.
Opening theory is mostly concerned with memorizing lines to see which openings can give you a
slight edge in the beginning. Though memorizing specific openings is favorable, there are also
chess principles that can guide a player to find moves that can give them an edge in an equal
matchup (Firman, 2013).
Creating a Chess engine from Scratch A chess engine is a basic tool in improving chess skills
when you reach a higher level of playing. Chess engines assist you in analyzing certain positions
to allow you to analyze your mistakes and use the knowledge earned from the last game. Creating
a chess engine is a long process even if it only has two principle functions: evaluating positions and
finding the best move (Zaifrun,

HISTORICAL CONTEXT OF NURSING When exploring the pages of history, it becomes
apparent that nursing has always existed and has primarily functioned within a framework of
human caring. This legacy of human caring dates back to biblical times and has been integrated
into every facet of nursing. This content will discuss an overview of the historical evolution of
nursing and nurse leaders that have shaped its current status. PREHISTORIC PERIOD Nursing in
the prehistoric period was delineated by health practices that were strongly guided by beliefs of

Yang represented the masculine forces, which were positive and active. Taijitu is the traditional

The Thematic Apperception Test ( Tat )
11. Remember that the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) is a projective test in which a person is
presented with a series of ambiguous pictures and composes a story. It is an apperception test
because the person reports not what he or she sees but rather a narrative or imaginary interpretation
(Murray, 1938, p. 324). Measured by a self report test, such as the Thematic Apperception Test. The
results demonstrated significant differences. According to the American Journal of Forensic
Psychology, adolescent male sex offenders demonstrate perceptual distortion of their environment
through the use of denial as a defense mechanism. Personality characteristics varied in areas such
as the internalized values and attitudes, their external expression, and inflated self esteem. The
results concluded that adolescent sexual offender is characterized as a unique individual, a result
of a stunted developmental process. Some sex offenders have deviant fantasies and the strong
desire to act on them. There have been instances where some sexual fantasies were actually carried
out. Male and female juvenile sex offenders often exhibit behavior that is sexually abusive at a
young age; some of their unfortunate and innocent victims tend to be male, but there number of
victims increases just as often as the type. Juvenile sex offenders tend to lack social skills that are
an important attributes of their offending, and low intelligence, but a history of sexual abuse in
their family is common.

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer
Jon Krakauer presents Into The Wild a tragic tale of a young ambitious man who is motivated to
go into the wilderness and discover his true identity.Jon krakauer conveys many messages to his
readers through Chris McCandless, and his messages often offer a warning to society.we will
furture idenitfy how the author delievers the warning to society and what effect it can have upon
society today.Three of the very important messages he empatizes on are the societies influence on
people, the essence of nature and the importance of fogriving someone.
Firstly we see how jon krakauer uses people and societies influence as a prime example to pass a
very important message. As we know American society seems to center around the idea of
american dream of going to the best university and to buy a new car, a new house overall to buy
anything and everything to look superior to others. This quote was said by chris which completly
descirbes our materalistic society So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will
not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security,
conformity, and conservatism. 56 57 Through the character Chris Mccandless we see how troubled
the author is by materalism and we also see authors disagreement to materalism when Chris denies
his parents offer to buy him a new car and by putting the strong emphasis on materalism the writer
makes the readers question the importance of the possesions and materalisms in

The Prostitution Industry Essay
The Prostitution Industry
A prostitute is defined by the Oxford Advanced Learner s Dictionary as a person who offers
herself / himself for sexual intercourse for money. Legally, prostitution is the sale of sexual
services. The services may consist of any sexual acts, including those which do not involve
copulation. While payment may be any nonsexual consideration, most commonly it is in the form
of money.
In what seems to be a world historical pattern, an upsurge in prostitution followed the effects of
urbanization and wage labor. In Africa and Latin America this trend was heightened by industrial
development, which greatly accelerated extensive displacement of people from traditional kinship
ties. Women often ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Abolition is a view that prostitution is immoral and prostitutes and their clients should be
prosecuted. This view calls for the complete removal of all prostitution activity within a community,
and making all associated activities illegal in the eyes of the law.
Regulation, on the other hand, allows prostitution to be considered a legitimate business or at least
an unavoidable evil; thus prostitution and empowerment of prostitutes are legal, but regulated in
terms of health, location of practice, etc.
Legalization sees prostitution as a victimless crime and should be made completely legal so that it
is no longer an underground activity, allowing the normal checks and balances of society and
existing laws to apply.
Decriminalization acknowledges that prostitution is inevitable, but exploitative; thus measures
should be put in place to protect prostitutes i.e. laws should target violent pimps and traffickers but
not the prostitutes.
UTILITARIAN VS DEONTOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES ON PROSTITUTION
Utilitarianism seeks the greatest good for the greatest number of people. They believe that they
should make decisions that result in the greatest total utility, that is, achieve the greatest benefit for
all those affected by a decision. Utilitarian decision making relies on a systematic comparison of
the costs and benefits to all affected parties. (Ferrel et al: 2005, p.98)
In the case of prostitution, a utilitarian would conduct a

Selection of an Appropriate Investment Plan
Investments the company will engage will consist only of investments with high moral and ethical
character. The management, after a thorough investigation of their background and subsequent
accolades should be of the highest standard of integrity. Any form of misconduct or misdeeds in the
recent past will disqualify the company from investment. Through social investments, the company
can increase resources dedicated to the overall socially conscious initiative and create ways by
which the same money can be reinvested over and over again. Below are three categories which
should help in assisting the selection of socially responsible investments. Program related
investments: Investments that support charitable purposes aligned with the company s mission
statement. Program related investments form many companies are generally structured as loans,
loan guarantees, or equity investments. Mission related deposits: Deposits made to federally
insured depository institutions including traditional banks, community development financial
institutions, and credit unions. This is similar in concept to basic consumer banking of check and
savings accounts. These deposits are used primarily for socially conscious issues that require
immediate funding. They are generally structured as insured certificates of deposit or share
certificates. Mission related investments: Investments that are intended to generate market rates of
return but have a social benefit as well. Every recession

Rudyard Kipling s The Jungle Book
The representation of animals within Rudyard Kipling s The Jungle Book is symbolic of the
colonisation of India, advocating the agenda of the British colonisers through the theme of
imperialist oppression. This is particularly evident within the Mowgli story Kaa s Hunting as well
as the animal story Rikki Tikki Tavi . Within the Mowglistory, the theme of imperialist oppression
is conveyed primarily through the Law of the Jungle as Kipling uses Baloo, the Bandar log and
Shere Khan symbolically as justification. Animals within Rikki Tikki Tavi embody this
representation also, reflecting this demonstration of imperialist oppression despite the lack of
pronounced law. The Law of the Jungle is essentially a set of rules devised to govern... Show more

Like Shere Khan, Nag and Nagaina represent the resisting of colonial imposition yet are
presented as antagonists despite their celebrated significance within Eastern culture (Veloso de
Abreu 690). The portrayal of these characters as the enemy epitomises Kipling s connotation of
resistance as adverse. Both Nag and Nagaina meet the same fate as Shere Khan to further
reinforce this notion as they die and imperial oppression triumphs. The character of Rikki Tikki
Tavi also holds symbolism within the scheme of Indian colonisation as he is subject of colonial
rule, employed to protect and defend his white masters (Nyman 207). The mongoose sacrifices
his traditional role to live under colonial rule, a choice encouraged as the narrator states that
every well brought up mongoose always hopes to be a house mongoose some day (Kipling). For
both Rikki Tikki Tavi and his masters to live, the antagonists, those who resist imperial oppression,
must die. This is explicit as Nag knows that mongooses in the garden meant death sooner or later
for him and his family (Kipling), once again justifying imperial oppression even without the Law
of the Jungle . The advocating of the agenda of British colonisers through imperial oppression even
extends to the character of Chuchundra as he is afraid of both the coloniser and of standing up to
the coloniser, represented

Being A Brat And Lock Me
The first thought that comes to my mind went I walked out of this classroom was: I m done

it almost every day. Just because I have been here for 5 years does not mean I am different. I also
miss the sun, but I don t go crazy on the day the sunis predicted to come out. I think I have done
well, surviving this torture for 5 years and counting. I just don t get it. If I don t want to run when
they tag me, I don t want to run. Now, because I told them that the sun might come out, they think I

Guns and Violence Essay
Guns and violence have some long lasting effects on not only the crime rate, but the rights that
people have to own guns themselves. Even though the violence is a factor in why many believe
that guns should be banned, guns should be allowed and not banned because they should be
allowed because of the laws and the rights of citizens allow them there rights. The ethics and laws
that occur with the current and enduring debates are another meaningful point. As Supreme Court
Cases rage on about how a cities ban on handguns could break amendments, this is how the topic
has gained from it (Hoxie 474). As crimestatistics begin to rise there are many reasons that they
need to work on the juvenile justice system (Collier 478). The other topic of... Show more content

Many believe that if guns are made illegal that there will be more violence due to how they receive
the weapon most likely illegally. As there are many kids that have obtained guns without their
parents even notice, they can bring tragedy to their schools, as kids are likely to open fire on other
kids if they would obtain a gun. It would not be the first time a child would have done this, as it
happened in Paducah, Kentucky as three children were killed in the lobby by a fourteen year
old. He was charged as a juvenile, as he was just a child (Collier 477). There are many statistics
that prove to be a major factor on why the juvenile system will most likely be revamped. Most
states have a way of sending children to a juvenile court, where they can only be found
delinquent and placed in a facility. This has been the normal way of taking care of it for quite a
long time and many believe that this law or rule needs to be changed. Crimes are linked to guns
and the violence they bring in many ways. They can corrupt adults and even their kids. As a child
everything seems different, and the violence they see on TV, video games, music, or any other
media including their parents themselves could have drastic measures on how they act. As some
kids have done things wrong only by mistake and some have done them knowing what they were
doing. One boy killed his teacher on the last day of school, and he was sentenced

The movie Awakenings starring Robin Williams and Robert De Niro portrays the true story of a
doctor named Dr. Malcolm Sayer, and the events of the summer of 1969 at a psychiatric hospital

Recently I watched a fascinating movie which related psychology and experimental drug usage.
The movie was quite long, and had a variety of high points and low points. A few main aspects
were touched on and could be related directly to my class and the information we have covered

Everybody loves Christmas. The suspense of not knowing what is under the wrapping paper
drives us absolutely wild. The joy of spending time with family, friends, and your significant other
is the best! But why do loved ones give each other gifts? In O Henry s short story The Gift of the
Magi, two young lovers sacrifice their own most prized possessions to get the other a Christmas
gift. Ironically, each one gets the other a gift to be used for their prized possession; however, the
gifts cannot be used because they no longer have any use. Author O Henry uses irony to enhance,
or magnify, the true meaning of Christmas: to selflessly give to someone you love to show your
love for them.

Even though Della and Jim made unwise choices in how to finance their gifts for one another,
they were the wisest in the sense that they sacrificed their own most prized possessions to give
to the other. And here I have related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a
flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house. (Page 251)
The narrator claims that Della and Jim unwisely gave up their valuables to display their love for
one another. But in a last word to the wise of these days, let it be said that of all who gives gifts
there two were the wisest. Of all who give and receive gifts such as they are wisest. Everywhere
they are the wisest. They are the magi. (Page 251) The whole theme of the story is stated here
by the narrator. He alludes to the Magi, or wisemen who bring the best gifts, but the narrator
stated that Jim and Della gave the best gift of all, and they are wiser than the Magi. Besides the
fact that Jim and Della were wise to sacrifice their own prized possessions for each other, the way
that they handled the situation and still loved each other after shows true wisdom. After all,

The Gap Between Economic And Social Classes
In modern the modern day United states, Americans face a problem that drastically affects the way
we have to live life. Our healthcare system has become drastically irregular and unequal in the
current system. After thorough analyzation of the provided CTSIP tables one can clearly see the
gap between economic and social classesthat exists in the current structure and can place the said
data into both a functionalist and marxist perspective.
Based on the data, there are certain patterns that appear frequently throughout. The overarching
theme is that healthcare is not easily accessible for the lower class of america. The upper class can
bothy afford easily access health care through its money while the lower class unfortunately has to
deal without it the majority of the time. Graph one clearly shows us a the the lower class does not
have healthcare(with an unusual spike in the middle class). We also see that there is a rather large
gap in between those that earn 25,000 35,000 and those that 35,000 55,000. The latter group has a
vastly superior amount of people with health care. Almost to a doubled amount. The reasons for no
health care? The CTSIP study surveyed a numerous number of possible rationale including: healthy
and don t need insurance , employer does not provide coverage , self employed and the cost is too
high , among many others. The findings can be striking. The majority of those surveyed said that
they simply cannot afford the premiums of health care so

Local Foods And Local Food
The local food movement connects both producers and consumers in the same geographic region
which develops a more community reliant food system. Local foods impact the local community,
environment, one s health, and the overall society. Local food does not have a definite answer, but
it does involve many subjects which are all distinguishable throughout the food system. Local food
could also represent the distance from the farm to the table. If local food is distributed straight
to a food hub, or a farmers market, or a grocery store, then the food could be considered local. If
the food is distributed to a manufacturer, or a warehouse that delivers the food to a grocery store,
then the food would not be considered local. This would not be considered local because the
food is being carried to multiple different areas which increases food miles. There are many
goals that are put in place from many local food supporters that involve food hubs, community
gardens, and farmer markets that all want to create a more sustainable local food system. Local
food systems help the local economy and allows consumers to buy products from their local
farmers, and communities. Some urban areas are in high risk of poverty and it does not allow for
locals to buy healthy foods for their families. They are at risk for their health from the foods they
have to buy considering what they can and cannot afford. Also, there are many urban communities
who are creating a more local food system for their

Christianity And The Early Stages
Have you ever wondered how Christianity was spread in the early stages? and what influenced
it? Rome held a huge part in both of these things. The Roman emperors, culture, and the Roman
religion all were things that influenced early Christianity very much. The time period in which
Jesus was on earth was probably the best time he could have come. It was a time of
Hellenization, right after Rome had taken over Greece. Most of the world was in the Greek
empire before it was taken over by Rome, so everything was Greek, and Rome adopted most of
the Greek culture for their own once they took it over. Everyone spoke the same language in that
area, making it easy for Jesus to communicate and share his word with everyone. Also, you have...

Octavian was emperor from thirty one B.C to fourteen A.D. His influence is that he built the

D.C. 1963 King gave his famous I Have a Dream speech that spoke of his hope for equality for all
Americans. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted all the races to come together for the hatred,
discrimination, and violence to be put to an end. Beyond the 1963 March on Washington, King
and his followers used a variety of nonviolent tactics to achieve equality through grassroots
activism, including the Montgomery bus boycott of 1955, the student sin ins of 1960, the Freedom

Cinematic Decoding In The Film Gladiator
Introduction
In this essay, I am going to discuss how meaning is constructed in a cinematic medium with the use
of cinematic coding. Directors use cinematic coding to influence the audience to react or feel a
certain way about a certain scenario, character or storyline in the way in which they believe it is
meant to be perceived or understood. This is done through the use of Encoding/Decoding,
Denotation/Connotation, Symbolism, Iconography, Mise en Scene, Editing, Compression of Time,
Camera angles/shots, POV and Sound. I will examine how Director Ridley Scott uses these tools in
the film Gladiator . I will look at which tools are used and the specifics of each tool in relation to
this film and what affect these tools have on the audience.
Encoding/decoding
Encoding of a message refers to the assembly of the message. Decoding of a message is how the
audience can understand, and interpret the message (Hall, 1973). Encoding/decoding within a film
is a technique, which directors use to both introduce us to and explain the world of the film to ...

The film is based over a number of years so much of the events which happen have to be shortened
down hugely to just involved the main parts. This is a common method of editing in many
historical action/Drama Films.
Camera angles/shots
Throughout the film, there is a god variety of shot types used and angle all the battle scenes use
multiple wide shits to establish the environment. The film is created in such a way that the
environments for nearly all scenes are rich in information and colour. Most of the dialogue is shot
in Close ups, over the shoulder shots and Mid shots are used throughout battle scenes to get a more
focused shot on just the characters who the director wants the audience to focus on at that time. The
use of mid shots will provide more information on the surroundings while still being able to draw
focus to the characters.

them know the right thing to do stand up for the victim. However, knowing the right thing to do
and doing the right thing are two very different things the difference is courage. This is shown
clearly in Ernest Gaines novel, A Lesson Before Dying, in Henrik Ibsens play, A Doll s House, and
a quote from the movie Hidden Figures. Courage is shown through Grant, Nora, and that there s
no bathroom for me here (0:31) from Hidden Figures respectively. In A Lesson Before Dying by
author Ernest J Gaines, Grant is the protagonist who is trying to do the right thing for his people.
Grant is in a very turbulent situation, having to make Jefferson into a man by the time he is
executed. This is the central plot of the story, but not the main themes and ideas of it. Grant is
struggling to help Jefferson because he sees generations of injustice through him. We got our first
load of wood last week, [Grant] told him. Nothing changes, he said. (Gaines, 53). The response
Grant s teacher gives him has a deeper meaning: he as Grants teacher failed to change the injustice
and racism and Grant is in the same situation. Nothing changes , but Grant does not give up for the
sake of Jefferson, his people, and most importantly, himself. At one point, Grant actually reveals
that it is too heavy a burden because of all the others who have run away and left their burdens
behind. So, he,

School Dropout s Rates From City
All these is done to convince the readers that millions of children are out of school in Pakistan.
The readers feels sympathetic a lot about these issue Basically, Azam attributes poor government
plans, lack of resources, poor education schemes and poor planning to this menace of poor
enrolment and absence of learners from. The author of this article employs the use of some
reasons and logic appeals in an attempt to lure the audience to read the article and identify with it.
For instance, it was show that the rate of enrolled children from Grade one to five maximum, but
the retention rate is only 67%. Also, the primary enrollment is 58% in Pakistan and the target of
100%. There are example that show the logic of low enrolment. There are different between school
dropout s rates from city to other. For example, Balochi stanand Sindh are highest population of
school dropout s children, the rates about 66% of children in Balochistanand 51% in Sindh are
not in school, however, Punjaband K P show low rates of dropout s children by 47% and 34%
children out of school. Lastly, inthe Federally Administered Tribal regions (FATA), 62% are not in
school, in Gilgit Baltistan 48% not in school. And about 43% of same kids live in Azad Jammu and
Kashmir.
The use of tables and pictures also act as another appeal in this article. In this case, Azam uses a
chart to indicate the rate of literacy in Pakistan and also the rate of primary school enrolment in the
same country (Azam).

History of the Euro Essay
History of the Euro
After the long awaited single currency implementation known as the euro, there have been many
ups and downs to this monetary system. Many have been quick to criticize while others still praise
its value claiming it will soon be valued strongly against the dollar. Our paper looks into the various
aspects of the euro and the progress it has made since its initiation. We begin with a brief history of
the euro then move on by raising some questions concerning the effects of the euro on various
economic aspects such as competition and global financial institutions. We then provide insight to
the various strengths and weaknesses of the euro and the implications this currency has on various
institutions such as banks. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Average was a good thing to them. If there was too much departure from the average, it was looked
on as bad. If the community average were 5 percent inflation, then a country with either 0 percent
inflation or 10 percent inflation would cause strains in the system. All this economic coordination
took place through a country s exchange rate, and was compared to the Europeans Currency Unit
(ECU) fixed rate. The EMS continued its ways for fourteen years. In May of 1993 in Denmark, the
Maastricht Treaty was finally approved. The treaty set out three stages of further transition to
monetary union between participant countries of the European Community.
Stage 1
Involved the elimination of all restrictions on the movement of capital between Member States, and
between Member States and third countries. This was supposed to have been completed by January
1, 1994. This goal was never accomplished. They were, however, on their way to forming a
monetary union.
Stage 2
The second stage began on Jan. 1, 1994, with the creation of the European Monetary Institute (EMI)
in Frankfurt, Germany. The EMI was a precursor to a proposed European Central Bank (ECB),
which controlled the implementation of a common European monetary policy, conducts foreign
exchange operations, holds reserves of member countries, and promotes smooth payment
mechanisms. The EMI also holds the gold and foreign exchange reserves, oversees the

Peacekeeping An Effective Method Of Conflict Intervention...
While peacekeeping has become a mainstay of the United Nations collaboration in international
affairs, it is evident that peacekeeping no longer espouses the ideals it was create with.
Peacekeeping has devolved into ineffective barbarisms. This is evident in the sexual abuses
perpetrated by peacekeepers, the growing complexity of peacekeepingmandates, which is at times
in conflict with United Nationsprinciples, and the lack of legal institutions surrounding
peacekeeping, which validates a belief of impunity. However, peacekeeping is not to be totally
derided as, in certain situations, it can be effective at limiting civilian deaths. Furthermore,
peacekeeping can be made effective if several reforms are enacted. These include an effective legal
order, an understanding of local culture, and developing strong relationships within the jurisdiction
of the operation. These changes could make peacekeeping an effective method of conflict
intervention.
Peacekeepers have committed various sexual crimes against local populations whilst under the
purview of the United Nations, yet few of these peacekeepers have ever been prosecuted for their
crimes. The international community became aware of the damaging deficiencies of peacekeeping
during the decade leading up to the twenty first century (Wills 2013, 49; Odello and Burke 2016,
839). Additionally, despite being aware of the sexual crimes being committed by peacekeepers,
very little has been accomplished to rectify the situation or to

Essay on Fred Gipson s Old Yeller
OLD YELLER
This was one of my favorite books during my childhood days. The book is a classic, and Disney
later made it into a motion picture. the story s climax develops quickly by telling stories and
adventures of a boy named Travis and his old stray yellow dog named Yeller. At the introduction of
the book Travis is plowing corn in the garden when an old yellow darts bye and causes the mule
to jump. He chases the dog out of the garden and curses at him. Then a few days later the stray
dog ate some of the deer meat that was very important for the family s survival. Travis was very
angered and threatened to kill the mischievious yellow dog, but his younger brother, Arliss, would
not allow this.

Travis then began to run and shout at the two fighting animals. The bear tucked it s tail and left. Old
Yeller had saved the life of Arliss and they were all very appreciative of what Yeller had done.
One of the next highlights in the book is when Old Yeller knocks down Rose, the milk cow. Travis
and Old Yeller were out in the woods looking for Rose because she had been gone for three days
without a trace. Rose had been expecting to give birth at any time and went off by herself to do
this. Travis finally located Rose and she had already given birth to the calf. Travis chased after
the calf to lift it up. While attempting to do this Rose charged towards him. It was at that time
that Travis began to realize what a great dog he really had. Old Yeller dashed and knocked down
Rose then as she charged time and again at Yeller the dog tripped her up several times. Later on
that day while Travis was milking Rose she kept kicking the milk bucket over and would not
allow Travis to milk her. In order to put a stop to this incident Travis called over Old Yeller to keep
Rose in line. Old Yeller stood directly in front of Rose and thrashed forward staring at her. The
heifer was so frightened that she did not even try to budge.
The final adventure of Old Yeller that I would like to portray is very tragic and sad. It begins with
Rose contracting a disease called hydrophobia. This is an extremely fatal disease which brings

The Ignored Lessons Of Anne Frank, By Bruno Bettelheim
Everyone seeks the approval or ratification of other individuals, whether it is a doctor seeking the
approval of peers, or individuals complying with the wishes of their doctors, as a means of
pleasing them. Ratification can be dangerous as individuals give power to those from which they
seek ratification. This can lead to relying on deception in the pursuit of ratification, as well as
others completely complying with those they deem as experts, in pursuit of the doctors ratification.
The article The Ignored Lessons of Anne Frank, written by Bruno Bettelheim, A Holocaust survivor
and former professor of psychology at the University of Chicago, provides evidence that supports
experts abusing power in pursuit of ratification. Likewise,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

She did all of this despite obtaining none of the qualification required to diagnose mental
disorders, as she is a doctor of anthropology and has never obtained a PhD in Psychology. Where
she abused her power by presenting herself as a doctor of psychology, was where she gains
access to a local mental hospital by presenting herself as such, stating in her article that one day
each week for a period of three months I observed, interviewed, and tested young patients of the
district mental hospital (587). This shows her grievous abuse of power to further her research
project, the purpose of which is to gain the ratification of her peers. Likewise, Dr. Bruno
Bettelheim demonstrates a similar abuse of power by an expert, both in his article, and in his
fabricated credentials. Dr. Bettelheim fabricated his credentials in that he presented himself as a
doctor of psychology, when he was not, and used these false credentials to live as a professor at the
University of Chicago, lecturing, researching and conducting clinical practices when he was
nowhere near qualified to do any of those activities (Finn). Yet in the article The Ignored Lesson of
Anne Frank, Bettelheim states, As a prisoner in Buchenwald, I talked to hundreds of German
Jewish prisoners who were brought there (Bettelheim pp.85) and concluded that they were too
attached to their possessions to escape persecution, criticizing them in the process. He states this
even though the Germans imprisoned

The Right to Privacy via Electronic Transmissions Essay
The right to privacy, via electronic transmissions to include the internet, is an ever present issue
that does not and most likely will not ever have a solution that will not only satisfy the wants of
citizens but the security needs of the nation. When issues of privacy arise we refer to a non
evolving, interpreted document called the Constitution written over two centuries ago. In order to
maintain national security, citizens must surrender some privacy for the good of the nation and
themselves. If privacy takes precedent over national security, then our nation becomes susceptible
to attacks both electronic and physical in nature. But if a fair and proper agreement between the
need for privacy and security can be reached, then it is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Framers wrote and established the Constitution to protect the citizens from any physical threat
within the nation. In reference to the right to privacy, the word privacy is never actually written in
the constitution. 1st, 3rd, 4th, 9th and 14th amendments have been interpreted to protect certain
privacies. The 1st amendment is the privacy of beliefs . The 3rd amendment is the privacy of the
home . The 4th amendment is the privacy of the person and possessions . The 9th amendment is the
general protection of privacy . The 14th amendment is the liberty clause, stating that states cannot
take away a citizen s life, liberty, or property without due process. These amendments in their
original form protect citizens from the states and the federal government, but through the evolution
of society and it s technologies we now also need protection against those outside of the United
States. The need to interpret how the constitution is to be applied to varying situations shows that
the constitution is in fact not a living document. Because it is not alive, it has not evolved or
adapted to the pressing needs of the nation. In 1890, the first wiretap occurred. A wiretap is the
monitoring of telephone or Internet conversation by a third party. In 1928, the Supreme Court
decided that wiretapping was constitutional because it cannot be considered a violation of the 4th
amendment. The 4th amendment protects citizens against unlawful search

The Road To Winter Analysis
The Road to Winter Topic 3
Mark Smith s, The Road to Winter (2016), charts the narrative of Australian teenager, Finn, who has
survived a virus that has wiped out the majority of his town. Finn is forced to survive, protecting
himself from the violent gangs in the North on his own, following the death of his parents. With
survival being the main theme of the novel, the characters in The Road to Winter exhibit their
exceptional and awful capabilities when their survival is threatened. Despite characters living in
seclusion, they will go to any means to protect their own survival. Furthermore, when Finn, Rose
or Kas lives are threatened, alternate characters will rise to their assistance, completing formidable
acts of bravery to save them. Finally, Ramage displays his awful capabilities, threatening others
survival, if his own leadership is jeopardised.
With characters in the novel living in hiding as a result of the constant threat that the Wilder s
pose, they need to abandon their seclusion to protect their own lives, despite the possible
fatalities. When Finn is first introduced in the novel, he is living a life of secrecy, demonstrated
through his first encounter with Ray when Finn was so shocked to hear another voice . It is
furthermore emphasised with the unexpected arrival of Rose, forcing Finn to come out of the
shadows and stand up to the Wilders. When Finn is away from home looking for Kas, Rose must

The Cause of the Dinosaur Extinction Essay
The Cause of the Dinosaur Extinction
The biggest mystery surrounding the dinosaur is how did they die? For over 130 million years
dinosaurs ruled the earth. Then 65 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period, they died
out. Nobody can really say what actually eliminated the species, although everyone has their very
own idea. Asteroid impact, atmospheric changes (hot to cold), catastrophic eruptions and
astronomical events (supernovas etc.). Some have ventured that early mammal inhabitation slowly
pushed the dinosaurs to extinction. The most favored theory in the scientific field is that of the
meteor impact. As always though, knowing when is part of discovering how and why.

By testing sediment and recording whether it was deposited under conditions of normal polarity
and then measuring successive layers, we can build a time chart. By matching different charts from
different areas with similar fossils, a more global correlation can be made. These techniques led to
the discovery of the boundary between the two eras. A single thin layer of clay found within
predominantly limestone rocks established this. By comparing the marine life found in, above, and
below the clay, the marine life, like the dinosaurs, had been terribly affected by the extinction event.
The percentage of life in the upper layers was dramatically lower than that in the lower. This was
far more compelling than what was suggested by dinosaur s fossils. Other samples of the clay were
taken to laboratories to be analyzed. Part of the results showed a large concentration of platinum
and iridium. These elements are very rare on the surface of the earth at the moment but they are
present in meteoric dust that rains down from space at a known rate. That rate allowed for a
measurement of how long it took for the clay to form. Surprisingly, the clay held almost 30 times
more iridium than the limestone layers above and below the clay. Similar layers in other parts of
the world gave the same results. The conclusion was that a giant meteorite hit the Earth 65 million
years ago and had released a large

The Great Wall of China
The reason why China suffers bitterly from endless wars is because of the existence of feudal

northern part of China, then along the Pacific Coast, and ends in the Gobi Desert. The Great Wall of
China runs for about 5,500 miles. The Great Wall of China was changed over the years in the Qin
Dynasty, Han Dynasty, and Ming Dynasty. The Great Wall of China began in the Qin Dynasty. The

Essay on Robert Nozick s Experience Machine
Good experiences are something that we spend our life constantly striving to obtain. Once we
gain these good experiences, we look for the next opportunity in order to gain that same great
feeling that we had in our last experience. What if someone told you that there was a way to have
these good experiences all the time? You could quite literally plug yourself into a machine that
would give you the great experiences that you have been searching for your whole life. The best
part is that, once you have decided to plug yourself into this machine, you would feel and think
that these false experiences you are having are real. Robert Nozick proposes this very scenario in
his book Anarchy State, and Utopia. This scenario is known as the... Show more content on

Unger mentions the tendency for us to buy life insurance as a claim that good experiences are not
the only thing that matter to us. We do not get good experiences for paying our life insurance. In
fact, we will never experience anything that happens to this money. We do this so that our
dependents will benefit from this money. With all this said, we are still very rational in buying
this life insurance. (Unger 1990, 166) Therefore, we should value our capacity to make free
decisions in the real world over just having good experiences. The life insurance example, that
Unger mentions, is a perfect example as to why there are things that matter to us besides pleasure.
Nozick sums this up by saying, Perhaps what we desire is to live as ourselves, in contact with
reality. (NozickВІ 2010, 1) One can interpret Nozick s statement by his insinuation that gaining
pure pleasurable experiences are not as valuable as knowing that we are living in contact with
reality. We should cherish and desire our lives in our realistic world; false pleasure experiences
have no real value. In our lives, we want to BE certain people to plug in to an experience machine
is to commit a form of suicide. (NozickВІ 2010, 1) Plugging into an experience in order for you to
merely experience false happenings would be lying to

  • 2. Notes On Motivation Theory And Motivation Chapter 2: Literature review 2.1. Motivation theory Types of motivation According to Pritchard and Ashwood (2008: 6), motivation is the process used to allocate energy to maximize the satisfaction of needs. It requires that one have a reason to do something. Well know researchers in this area Ryan and Deci (2010) believe that a person, who feels no drive or inspiration to act, can therefore be characterized as unmotivated, while someone who is energized toward a goal can be defined as motivated. People may also experience differing levels and types of motivation based on their individual backgrounds, which means that they vary not only in their amount of motivation, but also in the trend of that motivation (Ryan and Deci, 2000). Different things motivate people who come from different social, cultural, economic and/or financial backgrounds, or who have received different education. An employee s motives, socio economic background and value system will have an effect on how they work, as well as influence the outcome of their performance (Wyk and Erasmus, 2003: 315). Many researchers have worked in the field of motivation over the years, and developed different theories. Maslow s Hierarchy of needs theory proposes that an individual s most basic needs must be met before they will develop higher level desires (Goble, 1970). Maslow created the term metamotivation to explain the motivations of those people, which go beyond the extent of their basic needs and instead ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Piaget s Theory Of Cognitive Development There are some significant theories which is beneficial even today. Researchers still utilize and take advantage from some of them and do their researches based upon these theories. Piaget s theory of Cognitive development is one of them. While there are some benefits and advantages to use this theory to explain cognitive development, there are some problems showed up about this theory over time. This essay examines problems with Piaget s theory. Firstly explains theory, than focuses on what the results of the research are about problems and why they are become problem for Piaget s theory. Piaget s theory of cognitive development focuses on children s thinking differs from adults. According to him this is the reason why child has less knowledge than an adult. Inside of each container a damp paper towel was placed on the bottom and 2 pieces of food were placed on the paper towel. The Acheta domesticus were kept isolated in their personal containers for 7 days. At the end of these 7 days we split the 6 A. domesticus into 3 groups of 2. • 5. Global War On Terrorism And Terrorism Global War On Terrorism The attack executed in the United States on September 11, 2001 was one of the worst attacks and acts of war ever seen in U.S. history. On that day 2,996 innocent people were killed, over 6,000 people were injured, and about $10 billion in structural and infrastructure damages was caused. The cost added up to $3 trillion in total. The Global War on Terrorismis a metaphor of war referring to the global military campaign led by the United States of America. The war is a NATO operation being led by the U.S. Being a NATO operation, it automatically brings more than 20 allies to the U.S. s side of the conflict. The U.S. also has multiple non NATO allies in the War on Terror. The war has been ongoing for just over 15 years, and has been one of the longest wars in the history of the U.S. The location is global, of course, it is in the name. The war is not set in just one location because of the fact that terrorists operate in cells spread out the world, instead of one single army. A lot like how different street gangs are spread throughout a city. Even though there is not a set location, most of the conflict is centralized in the Middle East. Specifically the countries: Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Pakistan and recently in Syria. The main issue with terrorism is that it is a strategy which uses both intimidation and violence in the pursuit of political, religious or ideological gain. Most acts of terrorism involve the killing of innocent people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Parent-Child Relationship Essay Parent Child Relationships The topic I have chosen for my paper is that of relationship between parents and children. Some of the points that I will be discussing are child abuse, child neglect and how it can affect a child and the relationship with the parents. A parent child relationship is a special relationship that has a huge effect on the way that the child will turn out. This relationship is formed through pregnancy, adoption, and step parenting. Parenting requires a great deal of adaptation. The parents want to develop a strong bond with their child but they also want to maintain a healthy marital relationship and adult friendships. Potential parents often ask themselves what they will be like when they are parents and try... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another way that parents react may be slow or they may not even notice a need for action. That is called asynchrony (according to Schaffer, 1977). In 1978 a group of researchers in infant development at the University of Wisconsin demonstrated that mothers synchrony with their infants needs prompts physiological responses. The infant s temperament may partially stem from the way in which the mother handles the child. The child is affected by the way that they are treated even when they are infants. Frank Perderson and his colleagues in 1977 conducted research on what the link was between spouse relationship and parent infant relationship. Perderson and his colleagues believed that the three units of interaction (mother father, mother child, father child) are interrelated (according to Perderson 1977). This showed that when the wife and husband showed positive interaction towards each other (smiling and affection) they then would show their infant affection. When there was negative interaction between the wife and husband (verbal critic and blame) it was strongly linked to negative affection shown to the infant by the father. A form of negative interaction by a parent with their child is child neglect. Child neglect is when the parent of the child fails to meet the child s basic physical or psychological needs. Child neglect is the most common and most destructive form of child ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Why The Grandmother In A Good Man Is Hard To Find Similar to every character in any given work of literature, the grandmother from A Good Man is Hard to Find, had several attributes, both pleasing and vexatious. Of all her many qualities, I greatly valued her ability to consistently speak her mind, even in the face of danger. Never was she shy to give way to her true emotions and allow those around her to view her perspective on the events occurring within her life, a rarity in today s society. Additionally, it was made obvious how deeply she cared for her familyin her desperate attempt to persuade The Misfit to return to the good man she assumed he once was and therefore permit the family to safely escape the dangerous predicament. Likewise, the grandmother was a Christian woman that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Geological Event of Volcanic Eruptions and the Disasters they Cause In this report I plan to discuss the geological event of volcanic eruptions and the disasters they cause. To me, this is a fascinating topic and timely seeing how the 19th anniversary of the eruption of Mt. St. Helens is upon us. I hope to inform people of the mass destruction that is caused by the eruption of a volcano. The scope of my report will be limited to: 1) describing what comes out of a volcano, 2) explaining the seven different types of volcanoes, 3) explaining the five types of volcanic eruptions, and 4) explaining the disasters they can cause people. There are seven different types of volcanoes: Submarine volcanoes; Ridges and vents; Shield volcanoes; Lava plateaus and Flood basalts; Lave domes; Composite volcanoes; Cinder and Scoria cones; and Calderas. Each of these volcanoes is found in different geographical locations and have different eruptions. Along with different types of volcanoes, there are also different types of eruptions. The five eruption types are: Pelean, Vulcanian, Strombolian, Hawaiian, and Icelandic. These volcanoes have different levels of explosiveness, and their eruptions occur due to their geographic location. A volcanic hazard is destructive natural process that has a probability of reoccurring. Losses from volcanoes include: people s lives, property, livestock, and the productive capacity of the area. The factors of predicting volcanic activity are: the longer a volcano is inactive, the greater the chances are for it to become active; eruptive behavior may change with time; and some hazards are indirectly related to an eruption, making it difficult to forecast. • 10. Religion Research Paper Adherents of all the world s major faiths believe that their respective religions had a starring role in the very creation of mankind. Luckily, it is unnecessary to verify any such claims to realize that those very religions have played a major role in shaping mankind throughout history. Be it as a tool through which to consolidate and administer power in the case of the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, a call to arms to conquer the Iberian Peninsula and the storied Eastern Roman Empire in the case of the Caliphs of Islam, and as a force that brought together people from different classes, languages, and countries in the case of the Holy Crusades launched by the Roman Catholic Popes. Coming to Secretary of State John Kerry s plan to establish an Office of Religious and Global Affairs this is nothing short of belated. There is plenty of past legislation that serves as a building block if not a precedent. It was, after all, all the way back in 1998 that the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) was signed into law, leading to the state sanctioned promotion of religious freedom overseas. This is not, of course, to say that there are no potential problems with the creation of this office. Primarily, the potential overestimation of the role of religion in global affairs. Even back in the 8th century, evidence suggests that the Iberian Caliphate was no set up on account of pure religious fervor but also as a result of personal ambitions, power politics, and geopolitical concerns. These same factors, and many more, continue to play a role today. None should be overlooked through a myopic viewing of the situation through the frame of religion alone. If one were to assume that all terror is caused by people of the Islamic faith this may well lead to a simplistic ban of Muslims which could ultimately exasperate the issue of terrorism instead of addressing it. But a complete shift in thinking where the focus is suddenly shifted unto religion alone is not what is being suggested. John Kerry has been very clear in his intentions ... • 12. The Ecology Of Commerce By Environmentalist Paul Hawken Part I: Introduction The Ecology of Commerce, written by Environmentalist Paul Hawken, is an insightful, although daunting, look into economic and corporate sustainability. The first rule of sustainability is to align with natural forces, or at least not try to defy them . This quote, spoken by Paul Hawken himself, is a perfect demonstration of the major theme he carefully analyzes within the book. Economics and the environment are two words that you often don t see in the same sentence, despite the fact that the influence economics has contributes to the deterioration of our environment gravely. Part II: Background and Thesis Paul Hawken studies the many faults of the economic practices we adhere to globally. Whether or not we agree with his beliefs is a decision we as readers need to make. While an understanding of the environmental impacts is evident, as well as the biological changes it has put forth on humans, I question if individual change really makes a difference to the environment and the overall way the economy works. Hawken demonstrates a clear explanation to back up his statement of absolute resource destruction, but I believe he underestimates the change that may need to be done. I strongly believe we have reached a point in time where individual change is inadmissible, and in order to save our planet, large corporations and their accountability should be questioned. A world without sustainability, or more importantly a world without economic integrity, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Sixties Exposed in Takin it to the Streets and The Dharma Bums One cannot undertake any study of the 1960s in America without hearing about the struggles for social change. From civil rights to freedom of speech, civil disobedience and nonviolent protest became a central part of the sixties culture, albeit representative of only a small portion of the population. As Mario Savio, a Free Speech Movement (FSM) leader, wrote in an essay in 1964: The most exciting things going on in America today are movements to change America ( Takin it to the Streets, 115). His essay is critical of those that maintain the status quo and oppose change in America. It seems quite obvious that change has occurred as a result of the efforts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The rebellion against automation and middle class prosperity of the sixties is portrayed in Kerouac s The Dharma Bums. Ray and the other dharma bums lived on little money and enjoyed nature. Ray traveled cross country hitchhiking and jumping on trains from California to North Carolina and back more than once on only a few dollars and while at home in North Carolina for Christmas he sat in the woods with his dog much of the time and preferred to sleep in a sleeping bag outside on the porch rather than inside his mother s home. This love of nature and desire to live a very meager lifestyle in opposition to the working class prosperity seems to be more in opposition to the changing culture, which was becoming more automated and industry driven, than it was trying to illicit change. Regarding automation and middle class prosperity, it seems that Kerouac and others feared the loss of nature to industry as well as one s time to be able to enjoy nature. The fight against automation was however, somewhat subservient to the goal of social change regarding individual rights. The civil rights movement sought changes to the system of racial injustice. Modern Chess Openings: 13th Edition The third part of chess theory is the opening theory. Opening theory is mostly concerned with memorizing lines to see which openings can give you a slight edge in the beginning. Though memorizing specific openings is favorable, there are also chess principles that can guide a player to find moves that can give them an edge in an equal matchup (Firman, 2013). Creating a Chess engine from Scratch A chess engine is a basic tool in improving chess skills when you reach a higher level of playing. While payment may be any nonsexual consideration, most commonly it is in the form of money. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Abolition is a view that prostitution is immoral and prostitutes and their clients should be prosecuted. This view calls for the complete removal of all prostitution activity within a community, and making all associated activities illegal in the eyes of the law. Regulation, on the other hand, allows prostitution to be considered a legitimate business or at least an unavoidable evil; thus prostitution and empowerment of prostitutes are legal, but regulated in terms of health, location of practice, etc. Legalization sees prostitution as a victimless crime and should be made completely legal so that it is no longer an underground activity, allowing the normal checks and balances of society and existing laws to apply. Decriminalization acknowledges that prostitution is inevitable, but exploitative; thus measures should be put in place to protect prostitutes i.e. laws should target violent pimps and traffickers but not the prostitutes. This is particularly evident within the Mowgli story Kaa s Hunting as well as the animal story Rikki Tikki Tavi . Within the Mowglistory, the theme of imperialist oppression is conveyed primarily through the Law of the Jungle as Kipling uses Baloo, the Bandar log and Shere Khan symbolically as justification. Like Shere Khan, Nag and Nagaina represent the resisting of colonial imposition yet are presented as antagonists despite their celebrated significance within Eastern culture (Veloso de Abreu 690). The portrayal of these characters as the enemy epitomises Kipling s connotation of resistance as adverse. Both Nag and Nagaina meet the same fate as Shere Khan to further reinforce this notion as they die and imperial oppression triumphs. The character of Rikki Tikki Tavi also holds symbolism within the scheme of Indian colonisation as he is subject of colonial rule, employed to protect and defend his white masters (Nyman 207). The mongoose sacrifices his traditional role to live under colonial rule, a choice encouraged as the narrator states that every well brought up mongoose always hopes to be a house mongoose some day (Kipling). For both Rikki Tikki Tavi and his masters to live, the antagonists, those who resist imperial oppression, must die. This is explicit as Nag knows that mongooses in the garden meant death sooner or later for him and his family (Kipling), once again justifying imperial oppression even without the Law of the Jungle . Based on the data, there are certain patterns that appear frequently throughout. The overarching theme is that healthcare is not easily accessible for the lower class of america. The upper class can bothy afford easily access health care through its money while the lower class unfortunately has to deal without it the majority of the time. • 35. Local Foods And Local Food The local food movement connects both producers and consumers in the same geographic region which develops a more community reliant food system. Local foods impact the local community, environment, one s health, and the overall society. Local food does not have a definite answer, but it does involve many subjects which are all distinguishable throughout the food system. Local food could also represent the distance from the farm to the table. If local food is distributed straight to a food hub, or a farmers market, or a grocery store, then the food could be considered local. If the food is distributed to a manufacturer, or a warehouse that delivers the food to a grocery store, then the food would not be considered local. This would not be considered local because the food is being carried to multiple different areas which increases food miles. There are many goals that are put in place from many local food supporters that involve food hubs, community gardens, and farmer markets that all want to create a more sustainable local food system. Local food systems help the local economy and allows consumers to buy products from their local farmers, and communities. Some urban areas are in high risk of poverty and it does not allow for locals to buy healthy foods for their families. • 38. Cinematic Decoding In The Film Gladiator Introduction In this essay, I am going to discuss how meaning is constructed in a cinematic medium with the use of cinematic coding. Directors use cinematic coding to influence the audience to react or feel a certain way about a certain scenario, character or storyline in the way in which they believe it is meant to be perceived or understood. This is done through the use of Encoding/Decoding, Denotation/Connotation, Symbolism, Iconography, Mise en Scene, Editing, Compression of Time, Camera angles/shots, POV and Sound. I will examine how Director Ridley Scott uses these tools in the film Gladiator . I will look at which tools are used and the specifics of each tool in relation to this film and what affect these tools have on the audience. Encoding/decoding Encoding of a message refers to the assembly of the message. Decoding of a message is how the audience can understand, and interpret the message (Hall, 1973). • 43. Peacekeeping An Effective Method Of Conflict Intervention... While peacekeeping has become a mainstay of the United Nations collaboration in international affairs, it is evident that peacekeeping no longer espouses the ideals it was create with. Peacekeeping has devolved into ineffective barbarisms. This is evident in the sexual abuses perpetrated by peacekeepers, the growing complexity of peacekeepingmandates, which is at times in conflict with United Nationsprinciples, and the lack of legal institutions surrounding peacekeeping, which validates a belief of impunity. However, peacekeeping is not to be totally derided as, in certain situations, it can be effective at limiting civilian deaths. Furthermore, peacekeeping can be made effective if several reforms are enacted. These include an effective legal order, an understanding of local culture, and developing strong relationships within the jurisdiction of the operation. These changes could make peacekeeping an effective method of conflict intervention. Peacekeepers have committed various sexual crimes against local populations whilst under the purview of the United Nations, yet few of these peacekeepers have ever been prosecuted for their crimes. The international community became aware of the damaging deficiencies of peacekeeping during the decade leading up to the twenty first century (Wills 2013, 49; Odello and Burke 2016, 839). By testing sediment and recording whether it was deposited under conditions of normal polarity and then measuring successive layers, we can build a time chart. By matching different charts from different areas with similar fossils, a more global correlation can be made. These techniques led to the discovery of the boundary between the two eras. A single thin layer of clay found within predominantly limestone rocks established this. By comparing the marine life found in, above, and below the clay, the marine life, like the dinosaurs, had been terribly affected by the extinction event. The percentage of life in the upper layers was dramatically lower than that in the lower. This was far more compelling than what was suggested by dinosaur s fossils. Other samples of the clay were taken to laboratories to be analyzed. Part of the results showed a large concentration of platinum and iridium. These elements are very rare on the surface of the earth at the moment but they are present in meteoric dust that rains down from space at a known rate. That rate allowed for a measurement of how long it took for the clay to form. Surprisingly, the clay held almost 30 times more iridium than the limestone layers above and below the clay.
