or it will not be sustainable. Most fail within 2 years, or they begin to sell other
Goods or services to supplement growing operations. We define Commercial
Aquaponics as a business where growing operations are an independent profit center

  1. If AP is to become part of the food chain it HAS to become a profit making business. We can’t depend upon training, consulting, and equipment sales. The Business must stand on its own! Three types of AP operations Subsistence AP, feeds you and the neighbors – no sales Sustenance, AP, you sell to local farmers markets, a few restaurants (your family does all the work. You pay yourselves, no real profit. Commercial AP – You quit your day job! (well, maybe not right away…)
  2. At start up you will need to run for several months to build up the bio load to achieve full AP and get the filters operating well. Build the growing site and start growing vegetables using HP methods. In both subsistence and sustenance AP the fish are used as a fertilizer factory, few if any are sold and there is no profit in it at all. In truth, the vegetables are much more profitable than the fish. That’s why so many people go into HP rather than AP. Bio Security – keep fish and vegetables separated. Staff do NOT go back and forth. Fish Staff/Plant Staff. Everyone wears hair, foot covers, and gloves. Foot baths at both ends. A tight facility with air management system. A semi-clean room. This will enable certifications and likely prevent disasters. If not an expert, you’ll need experts hire on-call, or consultant: Engineer, Grower, and Vet (for fish)
