Electric Fireplace Advantages And Disadvantages
10 BENEFITS OF AN ELECTRIC FIREPLACE
There are so many options when it comes to selecting the heating source for a room. Lots of
people love additional fireplaces: who doesn t love the warmth, the crackling sound and lively
flame inside the room on a cold, rainy day? Nowadays, fireplace is still a popular option but more
and more people prefer using electric fireplace because they want to go green and care more about
their health. If you are not familiar with this practical appliance, the following guide will help you
understand the benefits and comfort they bring.
1.GETTING STARTED
An electric fireplace is a specific type of fireplace that requires no gas or wood burning. Instead, it
is powered by electricity and therefore requires no chimney or heat venting. It provides real looking
flame and crackling sounds.

2.WHAT ARE BENEFITS THAT AN ELECTIC FIREPLACE PROVIDES?
Electric fireplaces have many advantages over traditional fireplace.
It is very environmentally friendly: Unlike a traditional gas or wood burning fireplace, an electric
fireplace only requires electricity to run. No burning means saying goodbye to harmful smoke or
emission. As people are getting more and more conscious of the environment, electric fireplaces
have gained popularity over the years.
It adds aesthetic value to your room: Electric fireplaces are not boring at all: they come in various
shapes, designs and styles. In fact, they can easily become the focal point in a room. Whether they
are put in a corner or hung on the wall, these beautiful designs can attract your attention.
It provides an efficient heating source: While an electric fireplace can t heat up a room as
efficiently as a traditional fireplace, it works very well with limited space. If you use this appliance
for zone heating, you will be satisfied with the warmth it

A Narrative Criticism Of The Political Ideological Lens
The second criticism I enjoyed was looking at the political ideological lens. Also, having a BS in
Political Science with minors in International relations and Pre Law, this criticism fully caught my
attention. This lens focuses on the resistance of Jesus in his time to motivate Christians today to
stand against institutionalized power that often disenfranchises and demeans the opportunity to
obtain the American dream. When viewing the New Testament, we must be honest in evaluating
the aspects that do not contribute to public health. The issue of poverty and political culture as it
relates to the condition of the oppressed is always front and center. My first paper even though a
narrative criticism paper focused on the need for political expediency over the true application of
justice. This was demonstrated in Matthew 27: 11 26, where Jesusis brought before Pontius Pilate.
The purpose of this unit was to illuminate the affair between politicsand justice. The charge the
high priests brought against Jesus before Pontius Pilate displays that political expediency takes
precedence over justice. This unit is less about Jesus, partly due to his refusal to respond, and...

I believe that it is important to point out text like Matthew 4:3 11 that provides a new perspective
that takes an emancipatory and inclusive approach to mental illness issues. I want to create a safe
space that affirms that Jesus understands the particularities of all experiences, especially those
considered the furthest away. In my home church, I would the bishop say that no matter how much
sin one committed they could always come back to Christ and change their life. However, people
who struggle with mental illness are not given that grace and opportunity to come to Jesus. They
are often sat on the sidelines and ignored as if they are the modern

Sterotyping in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Essay
Topic 1: Stereotyping. The novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is based on the experiences
of one girl, Scout, growing up in Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s. The novel explains some
conflicts in Scout s life. Scout, the main character, learns that things are not always morally correct
and is confronted with the reality of prejudice and stereotyping. Scout struggles with understanding
the prejudice and stereotyping she witnesses. Atticus Finch, Scout s father, with his strongly held
convictions, wisdom, and empathy, Atticus functions as the novel s moral backbone. (2). Atticus
tries to raise his children to be fair and nonjudgmental. It is through the lessons of Atticus and Scout
s experiences with discrimination that the reader sees... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Regardless of the lack of evidence, the jury and town are reluctant to take the word of a black
man over two white accusers. Atticus strongly pleads for the jury to look past race and
stereotypes and serve true justice, They were confident that you gentlemen would go along with
them on the assumption the evil assumption that all Negro s lie, and that all Negros are basically
immoral beings. ... I am confident that you gentlemen will review without passion the evidence
you have heard, come to a decision, and restore this defendant to his family. In the name of God,
do your duty. (1). Throughout this trial Scout not only witnesses prejudice and stereotyping, she
becomes the victim of several people throughout the book. When Scout arrives for her first day
of school, she meets Miss Caroline, a teacher from the north. Miss Caroline has predetermined
thoughts as to how the class should be taught and how the children should learn. When Scout
tells the teacher she can read and write, she is punished and told she should not learn outside of
school and that she is too young to be able to read and write. Scout was mad with Miss Caroline s
refusal to accept any other teaching method but her own. This shows how Scout was stereotyped
because she was from rural Alabama and the teacher stereotyped everyone to be dumber than
herself. When Scout is verbally abused because her father is defending Tom Robinson, she becomes

The Organisational Structure Of Kc And KFC
In 1930 KFC was launched and the mission was to provide quality, service and cleanliness (QSC) to
the customers and consumers. Competition level was very low in the industry particularly in the
domestic market. KFC growth was good in its initial decades but with the increasing competition in
the domestic market the cake size started squeezing. Popeye s, the major competitor for KFC, was
born in 1972 which comes second with a share (12.7%) and KFC (55.2%). Organizational behavior:
Organizational behavior is the study of human behavior in organizational settings, the interface
between human behavior and the organization, and the organization itself. Organizational structure:

Salvadoran Immigration Policy
Caught in the crosshairs of a vicious war fueled by military aid from the United States,
Salvadorans throughout the 1980s and 1990s strived to make a life for themselves. Running from
El Salvador in hopes of a better future, they found themselves deadlocked in a marginalized life
north of the US Mexico border in Los Angeles. Without the law on their side, many Salvadorans
struggled to obtain legal admittance to the United Statesdue to inconsistent and inadequate
immigrationpolicies implemented throughout President Jimmy Carterand Ronald Reagan s
administrations. In Los Angeles during the mid 80s, a young group of Salvadorans emerged and

The Stanford Prison Experiment And Philip G Zimbardo
In chapter two, we study the research methods of different psychological experiments and studies.
This includes the ethical obligations of researchers toward the participants in their research, which
are enforced by institutional review boards at American research colleges and universities. In these
studies, researchers are required to provide the following: (a) informed consent of the purpose of
the research, its expected duration, and any potential risks, discomfort, or adverse associated with
it ; (b) protection for harm and discomfort; (c) knowledge of deception in a study and debriefing
once the study has concluded. These obligations are required to protect research participants.
However, these are not always followed in research. In the 2015 movie, The Stanford Prison
Experiment , audiences are shown a reenactment of the notorious true story. In August of 1971,
psychologist, Philip G. Zimbardo, at Stanford Universitywas interested on the psychological effect
that prison s have on human behavior. Therefore, Zimbardo put an ad in the newspaper reading,

However, this was not before the guards already showed major problems with throwing authority
around by hitting a prisoner . On the second day of the experiment, prisoners rebelled against the
guards which provoked the guards to put a rewards and punishment system into place, which turned
into a hunger for power. This power hungry alliance of guards forced three prisoners to be released
from the experiment for traumatic experiences by day four. As the experiment continued, the
guards only became more tyrannical while the prisoners become more unhinged. This forced Dr.
Zimbardo to finally discontinue the experiment after day

Forensic Science And The Criminal Cases
Forensic science plays a role in most criminal cases. In addition, it has become part of
mainstream American culture due to television and programs that are based on solving crimes.
The connection between science and law has been full of ups and downs. In the courtroom,
lawyers may find themselves examining scientific notions that they do not have a full
understanding of. Likewise, judges, who are also unexperienced with scientific concepts, are
forced to make the decision of whether evidence is relevant and reliable. There is great concern
surrounding the quality of our forensic science system. However, the courts continue to rely on
forensic evidence without having a full understanding on the limitations of certain forensic
science disciplines. There are rules that govern the admissibility of forensic science in court. In
the case, Bloodsworth v. State of Maryland, these rules were not followed and the forensic
evidence presented should not have been admissible in court. Every attempt should be made to
properly study techniques and have its accuracy verified before being used to describe or analyze
evidence in court. The standards for the admission of scientific evidence developed gradually over
the years. It started with the case, Frye v. United States, in which the court concluded that evidence
was not admissible unless it was generally accepted. Years later the Federal Rule of Evidence 702
was implemented, which stated that the only requirement is that

Economic definitions of productivity usually centre on its wealth creating potential. Language such
as satisfying market needs and maximizing input/output relationships are typical.
Productivity centers in Japan, Singapore and Malaysia talk of productivity being a state of mind
and the will to continually improve the faith in progress. According to the Productivity Committee
of the European Productivity Agency, mind set is the most fundamental factor in achieving
productivity growth where productivity is defined as an attitude of mind that strives for and
achieves the habit for improvement as well as the system and sets of practices that translate that
attitude into action.
The more sophisticated definitions address directly the involvement of all the resources or factors
of production that are available and generate measures of total factor productivity.
Strong linkages exist between total factor productivity and the financial performance of individual
organizations. High levels of total factor productivity will lead to high (and sustainable) levels of
profitability. Other definitions refer specifically to the relationship between output and labour, or
labour productivity since the link between labour

Essay on The Cause And Effect Of The Spanish American War
American imperialism in 1898 was not a sudden abandonment of anti colonial tradition but was a
logical extension of commercial expansion, something the US had been doing throughout its
history (SparkNotes: The Spanish American War, 1898 1901,: Effects of the Treaty). President
McKinley was not interested in wars of conquest or of territorial aggression. His interest in
expansion was to make the United States first in international commerce and as a means to
implement its humanitarian and democratic goals (Faragher, J., Buhle, M. J., Armitage, S. H.
,2008, Out of Many, A History of the American People, 6th ed., Vol. 2, p. 561). McKinley would

Hearst s New York Journal published a leaked letter in which the chief Spanish diplomat in
Washington... described President McKinley as weak and a petty politician. Hearst publicized
the...letter under the screaming headline: WORST INSULT TO THE UNITED STATES IN ITS
HISTORY (HIS104 U.S. History Since 1877 30 Jun 2008, OL20). The battleship, USS Marine
was stationed in Havana s harbor to protect American interest in Cuba. An explosion destroyed
the vessel on February 15, 1898. A naval court of inquiry blamed the explosion on a mine,
further inflaming public sentiment against Spain (HIS104 U.S. History Since 1877 30 Jun
2008, OL20). Again, the press stirred up the public with stories and headlines of a Spanish
conspiracy. American now demanded revenge for the deaths of 266 sailors (Faragher, J., 2008,
Out of Many). President McKinley demanded that Spanish government end brutality of the
Cuban people, engage in armistice, and promise the eventual independence of Cuba. Upon Spain
s refusal, McKinley asked for a declaration of war. (HIS104 U.S. History, Lecture, 30 Jun 2008,
OL20). In order to assure the world that it was fighting only for the good of Cuba and not for
colonial gain, the US passed the Teller Amendment, which promised to make Cuba independent
after the war was over (SparkNotes: The Spanish American War, 1898 1901: Summary). The

Elie Wiesel once said Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my

It opened in spring of 1940, it was known as the largest Concentration Death Camp. It was
located in southern Poland. In the beginning, its purpose was to be used as a jail for anti Nazsi
and politicians. At the time it housed between 15,000 and 20,000 prisoners. However, once Hitler s
Final Solution plan became official, Auschwitz was turned into death camp. The Final Solution is a
Nazi program created by Adolf Hitler to kill Jews, artists, educators, gypsies, communists,
handicapped and any other unfit people living in his command during World War ll ( Define of
Final Solution ). Auschwitz became the ideal spot for a death camp because it was in the center
of all German commanded countries and it was surrounded by several other Concentration
camps. Once the death camp was fully finished it consisted of seven gas chamber, many
crematory ovens, more than 40 smaller factories, and enough housing to hold 90,000 prisoners.
Once the prisoners would arrive at Auschwitz, they would be put into gas chambers. In these gas
chamber, they would be forced to remove their clothes and be shoved into a large crowded room
where they would be sealed in, and then exposed to a poison called Zyklon B. Once they inhaled
the poison, they would instantly lose their life. Other prisoners were forced to be involved in

Animal Testing is Unnecessary and Cruel Essay example
Carrots the rabbit has been under experimentations for almost all of his life. He has to suffer so
someone can wash his or her hair. The makers of Dove shampoo are probably going to shove
shampoo down his throat his reaction to it. Even if the rabbit lives through the experiment, there
still going to kill him to see what happened to his organs. If this were a humanbeing experimented
on, people would be mesmerized. Scientist are debating whether shoving shampoo down a rabbits
throat is effective. Testing on animals is a highly disagreeable process that should not be allowed.
An animal is a living thing and so is a human. They eat, sleep, and live their life. Animals have
rights. Why is it allowed that animals have to suffer so a human ... Show more content on

Another point why animal testing is wrong is because of the brutal things that happen to the
animals. For example, the Draize Test is used on white albino rabbits. They use white albino
rabbits because of their sensitive eyes. In this process scientist, rub shampoo, soap, toothpaste or
lawn products into their beautiful red eyes. Then they record the damage, they have observed.
The test lasts up to 18 days, with the poor animals eyelids held open with a clip. Many of the
rabbits end up with broken necks trying to escape from terrifying pain. First, it is unreasonable to
keep the product in their eye that long. Not even a child would keep a product in their eye that
long. The whole experiment was unnecessary to do. The eye tissue of a rabbit is very different
from a human eye tissue. The pain they go through had no benefits.
A final reason why animal testing is pointless is that there is no law saying that it is necessary to
test any product on animals. Why make an animal suffer when there is no need? There are
alternatives for animal testing that would have better results for humans, and it would not be
involved in any animal unkindness. Why do companies not realize that they do not have to
experiment on innocent animals?
No animal should have to suffer for an unreasonable cause. Carrots the rabbit live today if it was
not for the companies that still believe that it is okay to test animals with products. If there were
alternatives to animal testing, why would it

The Five Steps Of The Federal Budget Process
I. Introduction The federal budget process is a lengthy and complex process that involves
monitoring, adjusting, and reporting on the current year s budget. The budget process is put in
place to ensure there is enough funds for many things such as wage war, provide housing, and
maintain streets (Rubin 2014). Some of the actors are Bureau Chiefs, The Executive Budget
Office, and Chief Executive Office. It all begins with the Federal Budget Process and the
President s proposed budget, while directly involving the execution process. The budget execution
process aims to reduce the risk of overspending, but when the budget is nearing completion, and it
seems overspending will occur, budget sequestration comes into play. However, if not used
correctly, sequestration could do more harm than good to our economy and cost important
programs their funding. Misuse could also lead to the waste of time and money, which does not
benefit the warfighter or the taxpayers. II. Federal Budget Process There are five steps in the
federal budget process and it involves many different actors. The first step of this process involves
the President submitting a budget request to Congress. This budget request includes the way the
President best sees money being spent, it provides suggestions. The second step is the House and
Senate passing budget resolutions, they do so by casting a vote on their budget resolutions. The
third step is the House and Senate subcommittees marking up appropriation

Women s Rights During The Seneca Falls
My dearest James,
Being at the convention in Seneca Falls, New York has caused me to look back on our time in

mistreatment the other women and I faced not being allowed to fully participate showed me the
important issues of women s rights. Despite the hardships we faced at the General Anti slavery
Convention meeting Elizabeth Stanton was wonderful. I believe working with her will help my

our wonderful children will support and follow in my footsteps of supporting the rights of
women. There is no matter of misconception regarding the document s demands put further by
our needs. Although I fear people will not take the document seriously, and will look badly
towards the movement. I think my next venture will be starting to write a book to show the need

Observation Of A Daycare
On Monday, November 20, 2017, at 7:30 am I observed twelve children in a classroom
environment. This daycare is a local daycare in my hometown, Bryan, TX. During this visit, I
learned a lot of new information, how and why children communicate. The classroom consisted of
about twelve young boys and girls ranging from the ages of two years old through five years old.
This classroom was not diverse. There were only ten African Americans, and two of the children
were mixed with African Americanand White. There were two daycare staff workers, who were
both African American. The theme for this week at the daycare is Community Helpers. The two
staff, answered questions, assist in a particular station for the day, and made sure that every stay on
task. There is a total of four stations, where three children pair up to each station. There were two
stations, that were self start station. Those stations include Reading/Writing and Math station, the
children were familiar with the daily routine and did not need much help or attention.
The Reading/Writing Station is one of the most important stations because if a child doesn t
know how to read or write they will not be able to go to a higher level in school or even be
successful later on in life. In this station, I saw the students picking a book from the box which
consisted of many different professions and community helpers that they could read and learn
about. Once they finished reading they would pull out a piece a paper so that

Pascal s Wager Argument
A common argument used to disprove the existence of God is Pascal s Wager. This argument states
that it is more rational to believe in God as you will be rewarded. If God existed, and the person
believed in God, he would be rewarded. If the person did not believe, he would be punished .If God
did not exist it would make no difference. For this reason it would be more rational to believe in
Godrather than to not. Pascals Wager was defined by seventeenth century Philosopher Blaise Pascal.
The argument can be standardised as follows:
P1. Either God exists or God does not Exists.
P2. If God exists and I believe, I gain a great deal (Heaven).

There is also an assumption that practising Christians will be rewarded with bountiful, happy,
healthy and fulfilling lives which fails to acknowledge the many Christians in this world who
suffer in poverty, starvation and chronic disease .In Pascal s Wager, Blaise Pascal was arguing from
ignorance. He is arguing the claim that God is sufficient for salvation which is a claim that he
has not justified with evidence. Therefore using the belief of God as a way to gain a bountiful life
and then salvation is a weakness as Pascal s argument which cannot be substantiated with proof of

Change Progress and Prosperity
Change Progress and Prosperity The Harvest took place in a small, secluded, and self reliant
agricultural community in England, before the industrial revolution. The novel was based on
change, growth, progress and prosperity. The village, as the narrator Walter Thirsk stated was, far
from everywhere (Crace, 3) and isolated from the world. The village was also fragmented and
missing any development of identity. The commons were the people living in the unnamed village.
The commons way of life changed from harvesting and plowing to extracting wool for clothing. Jim
Craceexamined the themes of changeand fragmentation by the loss of identity and way of life
through the use of symbols, characters, and imagery. In the Harvest, symbolism was evident
throughout the novel. Symbols are commonly used to add richness and depth to the story. The
author used symbols to develop the main themes of change and fragmentation. During the course
of the novel, the most significant symbols included: fire, crops, ghost, unfinished cross, quills,
sheep, wool, and the rock. In the novel, fire was the most impactful symbol. The novel started
with two fires and ended in one. What starts with fire will end with fire (Crace, 198). The element
of fire represents a variety of meanings such as: passion, hope, anger, devastation, and betrayal. In
the beginning of the film, fire represented betrayal and devastation. Two twists of smoke at a time

Now, you might say that I can t have a chinchilla because of the dogs or maybe because I m not

The Major League Baseball ( Mlb )
New York, New York, New York, The sport of baseball has been through many things, wars,
depression, even strikes and moving form one side of our great nation of the United States to
the other. The Major League Baseball (MLB) even has teams in Canada. New York is the city
we are talking about, though, some might not know it the home of MLB, and some even call it
the Capital of Baseball. (Burns, 1994) I can believe it, the city was where most of the history
started for the sport of baseball. I wont even mention all of the other major league sports that
currently reside there. I have to give you some facts about the city of New York. Currently there
are two teams there, the Yankees and the Mets, which I think is funny because they started with
three, lost two and now there are two. Overall, there have been thirty five MLB World Series and
seventy three pennants won by New York Teams. There has even a Sub way Series, which
means that the two New York teams played each other. Taking a sub way to each of their
respected fields to play the game. To be exact there has been fourteen, overall, World Series in
which two New York City teams played each other. This occurrence has never happened more than
once in any other city or metropolitan area. The latest was in 1989 when Oakland Athletics and the
San Francisco Giantsplayed each other. There are four other cities that have two baseball teams,

Relationship Between Language And Symbol
The definition of a symbol according to Merriam Webster Dictionary is something that stands
for something else by reason of relationship or association; and can either be letters, pictures, an
action, object or event. Symbols are not restricted to pictures or objects, but can include gestures
as well as words. Symbol use is necessarily not just for infants, but adults as well and is crucial to
the way humans think. Not only does something such as a map serve as a symbol but words such
as wedding ring can also be seen as a symbol. Therefore, it is clear that languageand symbols go
hand in hand. The question that arises then is the affect of these two on learning in young children.
Many studies have been conducted studying the relationship and affect between language and
symbol use in infants. It is understood that linguistic and symbolic abilities overlap , but language
is far more complex than learning symbols. (Namy, Waxman, 1998) When infants are first learning
words, they connect the words they re being exposed to, to the objects around them. Therefore,
early wordacquisition focuses on the symbolic nature of words. (Namy, Waxman, 1998) This study
more specifically focuses on how infants distinguish between words and other symbols and how
this relationship changes with development. A more recent study proposed that, early word
acquisition is a function of a general symbolic ability, suggesting that infants learn words and
symbols with the same ability at the

Doctrine of Foreign Policy Constructed by U.S. Presidents
There were many presidents of the United States that were able to construct doctrines during their
presidency terms in office that defined their individual foreign policy goals and/or aims. Just to
name a few there was the Monroe Doctrine of 1823, Truman Doctrine 1947 and the Reagan
Doctrine of 1984. For example, the Monroe Doctrine was constructed for two main reasons: 1)
John Adams, Secretary of State, suggested the principle that the Western hemisphere was not an
option for any further colonization by the European powers and 2) the U.S. would defend the
freedom of other nations. The Monroe Doctrine proved its power in the 1900 s when President
Roosevelt enforced the doctrine during the Venezuela Border Dispute as well as securing the
independence of Cuba from the abusive Spanish rule.
During his Presidency, The Ronald ReaganDoctrine was a foreign policy in the United States from
1980 to 1991. The doctrine was to help eliminate communist governments such as Latin America,
Africa and Asia which were supported by the Soviet Union (Lagon, 1994). The plan was to
implement support to private and open guerilla and resistance movements that were supported by
the Soviet in communist countries. Containment was the official policy towards communism and
in creating the Reagan Doctrine, the focus started from keeping communism from spreading then it
shifted to eliminating existing communist governments. In addition to the eliminations of the
communist governments, the United

Diagnosis Asthma
Asthma is a chronic airway disorder marked by inflammation. The inflammation affects multiple
structures involved in the respiratory system of the body. These structures include the trachea, the
bronchi, and the bronchioles. Bronchoconstriction is the main response that occurs during an
asthma attack. The bronchoconstriction can be attributed to many different factors including
edema, an excessive amount of mucus, muscle damage and bronchospasms. Bronchospasms are ...
sharp contractions of bronchial smooth muscle (Lynn Kushto Reese, 2015). The muscle damage
can lead to severe airway impairment and a perforated epithelium which then allows easy entry of

Power Of Power By Thomas Hobbes
Hobbes (50 Points)
Thomas Hobbes belief was morality arose out of a state of nature that operates outside of your
own being. According to the Leviathan, Hobbes beliefs entailed a state of nature in which all
human beings remain in a constant state of war, where there exists no peace, no justice or
injustice, simply force and fraud(Hobbes, Chapter XIII). Everyone is equal since in the natural
state everything is a free for all; we each have equal vulnerability and no one has true ownership
of anything, therefore everything is free; we are all equal leading to endless war. All that does
exist in a natural state is desire, predominantly one for power. According to Hobbes, power is the
most natural and desired out of all natural things since power leads to one s ability to satisfy his
ever changing desires. Desires are endless and infinite; they lead to the persistence of war in
nature. Power satisfies one s need for war since the more power one has, the more desires of his
that he can meet. A common inclination of humanity is for more power since it is the strongest
and most infinite desire; we are left always wanting more than what we have. Power enables a
person to swap and obtain things that meet new desires as they arise. For a prime example,
Hobbes lived during the English Civil War where the King and royalists fought against the
Parliament in a struggle for power. King Charles believed he had divine power, from God, to rule
England and therefore had the power to meet

A Brief Note On Air And Water Pollution
There was a unique policy window for air and water pollution because of the fast growing
involvement with the Environmental movement. On April 22nd 1970 the nation held it s first
Earth Day. Americans were eager to participate to demonstrate their loyalty to the planet. This
accompanied by Nixon and other policy entrepreneurs ability to obtain a better solution to the
air quality problem, resulted in the Clean Air Act. It was easier to generate the public s support
because public health became such a concern. Environmental issues were becoming visible to
those who didn t care before. The Cuyahoga River fire in Ohio was one of many problems being
discovered by the public. The Santa Barbra oil spill and large amounts of smog in cities like Los
Angeles, all allowed people to see the real issues with pollution. Pollution became such a visible
issue to the public because it directly affected them, they were more inclined to support
environmental policy.
Once the public made it clear that air pollution was a major concern, President Richard Nixon
began to aggressively support the environmental issues. After the massive participation in the first
Earth Day in 1970, Nixon signed an executive order to establish the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA). The EPA was created to be primarily in control of the Clean Air Act regulations and
enforcement. Senator Edmund Muskie was another key political entrepreneur for the CAA. It was

Washington Irving, American Story Teller Essay
Washington Irving, American Story Teller I strongly agree with the statement Washington Irving
found in legend and folklore a view of the natural world colored by emotion, by superstition, and by
the ancient belief that supernatural beings inhabit the wild places of the earth. He wrote stories that
illustrated old truths about human nature and the dramatic possibilities of the American landscape.
Although Irving wrote over twenty volumes, including essays, poems, histories, biographies, and
more, in class, we have focused on his fiction. Irving dispersed many beliefs and legends of his
time, and the past, into his stories. He also made great use of American themes in these literary
pursuits. Such details along with existent people and events interlaced in his imaginary tales are
some of the reasons I find his work so distinctive and enjoyable. Washington Irvingwas the
youngest of eleven children, born into a somewhat wealthy New York City merchant family in
1783. In his twenties, he wrote for newspapers, journals, and magazines. Shortly afterward, he
worked in publishing and editing. As the first American belletrist, Erving found great enjoyment in
writing. His first notable book, (which he heralded the release of with a fanciful precursor,) was A
History of New York (1809). It was published under one of his many clever pseudonyms, (faux
historian), Diedrich Knickerbocker. When Irving was thirty six years old, the simultaneous

considered by many to be his last major victory. There he would face a new opponent elephants.
The river was also a mile wide. Alexander would be facing an army again that outnumbered him.
King Porus thought the river was his best defense, but he underestimated Alexander s ability to
fight. Porus thought that Alexander would wait until monsoon season was over because the river
was deep and fast. Alexander ordered from his Indian ally, King Taxila, large grain shipments,
giving the indication that he would wait for monsoon season to end. But he had no intention of
waiting. Then Alexander started a distraction by putting campfires along the shore.

The Hospitality And Tourism Industry
The hospitality and tourism industry plays an essential role in global growth around the world.
One of the biggest key players is an airline industry. An airline industry contains both hospitality
and tourism. One of the key players to this industry is the cabin crew. However, according to
Laszlo with recent economic decline the airlineindustry is not in good health in terms of operation
and customer service organization said (1999). It is therefore, important to understand that the
crews must perform function as key player in an airline industry by providing various types of
customer service, safety and security threats, sales and promotion.
As cabin crews are playing a crucial role in the industry, they are to be selected carefully by the
human resources. The desired corporate skills sought for the crews are; a motivation to deliver
high standard customer service, team skills and commercial awareness. In addition to these
skills, it is necessary that an individual is interviewed and upon successful application, and to

definition of providing comfort to guests is, to also make a profit but as well as to make
customers feel satisfied just like staying at a hotel. Perhaps this might be the reason why an airline

The reason people are enjoying Gangnam Style more than rejecting the music video is because
people are uneducated about the Western Media industry for Asian males. Until extensive research

The Descent Of Alette Analysis
In The Descent of Alette, the word flower is used very often, but beyond its literal meaning as
the reproductive portion of a plant. However, this definition does tie into Notley s use of the
word very well, because her uses of the word flower are centered around a description of women.
The use of the word flowerto describe women does not occur in the obvious sense of meaning
beautiful, peaceful, or lovely, but in describing aspects of women that lie beneath the surface and
comprise their femininity. This may come across as a sweet notion, but The Descent of Alette is a
story that cannot be described as sweet in any sense of the word, mainly because of its setting in a
dystopian society run by a tyrant. It is not stated, but it can be inferred,... Show more content on

This point holds true for The Descent of Alette as it acts as a cautionary tale of the dangers for
women in patriarchal societies by featuring a very apparent phenomenon. The story being based
within a dystopia adds emphasis on how disastrous a world run without the aid of a woman would
be. Notley s inclusion of situations that accentuate the gender hierarchy and the social constructs
that force women to fulfill society s expectations work to establish the value of femininity. In
using the flowers to represent femininity, Notley is able to delicately present the stakes of living
without this attribute, making us have to read between the quotation marks and the lines to
realize how horrid a life would be like without this sense of womanhood. Epic poetry also
depends on the existence of a hero who must overcome adversity and, by doing so, exalt the
values cherished by a people or nation (Mercadal). This statement does a good job of describing
Alette s role within the story. All throughout she witnessed the burning of flowers and the
disadvantages women faced all while having to overcome obstacles herself, but in the end, she was
able to kill the tyrant and allow everything to C[o]me to light that morning so the flowers could

Delta s attempted method of dissolution would have ultimately lost because of two factors: 1) lack
of understanding of the Spanish culture and preference, as well as, 2) their lack of restaurant
experience. Further, it would decrease the chances of future successes in Spain since their
dissolution strategy will certainly be known across many industries and political networks. This
would make Delta s ability to establish new contacts, find and purchase property, apply for a food
license, hiring qualified local managers, gaining new customers and opening new stores a difficult
and costly undertaking.
As stated by Costas, Delta has insufficient capital for its planned expansion (BRS p.12) which is
required if it was to venture on its own in Spain. No longer having a partner, Delta would be
required to put up 100% of the costs necessary to expand the business, rather than the 50%
previously required. Without the contacts Terralumen has, these costs would likely rise as well. The
real estate market requires extensive knowledge, and without this knowledge, they will likely pay a
large premium.

Theme Of Women In The Yellow Wallpaper
The Woman behind the Wallpaper
There comes John, and I must put this away, he hates to have me write a word. (Gilman 469)
This quote is a prime example of the lack of freedom and control woman in the 1800 s have. The
narrator of our short story The Yellow Wallpaper is an excellent example of a Victorian Womanwho
expresses the theme of Female Oppression and inequality. Through use of literary elements such as
characterization, symbolism and imagery Gilman perfectly illustrates the social issues these women
struggle with.
Gilman uses literary elements such as characterization and imagery to help emphasize the
detrimental effects of female oppression. In the story the characterization helps to demonstrate the
struggles between Jane Doe and John. Her husband, John, often demeans the narrator making her
appear self centered. Perhaps that is one reason I do not get well faster. You see he does not
believe I am sick. (Gilman 468) This illustrates the toxic and unhealthy relationship between John
and his wife. John controls her by forcing her to believe all her issues are in her head, causing her
paranoia and delusion. Furthermore, this helps express how much power men hold over women
and how little control females have over their lives. Another example of how literary elements
demonstrate the overall theme of inequality of women occurs when Gilman describes their house
through immense imagery. One example of the amount of control John has comes through the dark
and eerie

The Passion Of The Christ
Passion of the Christ
In this film Passion of the Christ the scene begins with Jesus being brought into a Roman court
yard bound in shackles and chains, limping and visibly beaten from the night before. Jesus was
arrested in the early am hours so that any protest of the Pharisees behaviors would not be made.
The elders of the Synagogue want to be in full control of what happens to Jesus. In this analysis I
will explain my viewpoint of Why it was so vital for bad things to happen to this man and What
good can come from violence being displayed in this manner?
Jesus is brought in to stand trial before Pilate a Roman governor. Pilate clearly does not want to
condemn this man; this was partly because he sees no real crime committed and partly because
of a vision his wife had in a dream. Pilate first asks the Jewish High Priests Do you always punish
your prisoners before they re judged? Pilate questions Caiaphas and Jesus and finds no merit
worthy of death and tries to pass the decision of Jesus fate off to King Herod. However, King
Herod gets nowhere with his line of questioning towards Jesus so he sends the decision back to
Pilate. Pilate undeniably does not wish to crucify this man and attempts to free him by allowing a
choice for a prisoner to be freed. Yet, to his surprise the people decide to free Barabbas, a murder,
over freeing Jesus, a non violent man. This decision was thanks to the persuasion of Caiaphas and
the other men of the cloth. Once again, Pilate

It is for this reason that the study of DNA generates such excitement in medical research, and offers

common cold) for early detection and prevention. Furthermore, this information will allow
pharmaceutical companies to identify from a certain individuals genetic make up if they are likely
to react adversely to a particular drug. It will also allow the companies to identify people who
would benefit from particular drug treatments. The last two areas are important in the field of
pharmacogenetics, this is the tailoring of drug treatment to the genetic make up of the patient while
maximising the drug efficiency and minimizing the possible side effects.
Before any information on the human genome sequence was available, when individuals didn t
respond well to prescribed drugs the drug was blamed. However, over time we have gathered
more information and expanded our knowledge on the human genome and actually discovered that
the adverse reaction was down to the individual and not the drug. This is because within all of us
there are known to be polymorphisms. In order for us to understand this I must describe the science
behind this idea.
Genes are made of 4 nitrogenous bases these are adenine, guanine, thymine and cytosine. Adenine is
complementary to thymine and guanine is complementary to

An Argument For Rose In The Hall Of Fame
Baseball is the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of ten, and be
considered a good performer. Ted Williams. When referring to all time greats in the world of
baseball you will hear about the likes of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams, Hank Aaron,
Jackie Robinson, and Ernie Banks. None of these men have the most hits in baseball s storied
history. The man that does, however, is not in the Hall of Fame.
There have only been 15,213 men to play in the MLB, only 29 of those accumulated 3,000 career
hits. Peter Edward Rose Sr, better known as just Pete, played Major League Baseball for 23 years. In
his 22nd season (1985) he surpassed Ty Cobb as baseball s all time hit king with 4,256 hits. In
1989, Rose gambled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He has had many supporters for his reinstatement over the years. Washington Nationals closer
Jonathan Papelbon said He should be in the Hall of Fame, One Hundred Percent, if you don t
want to put him in as a manager, put him in as a player, he didn t make any mistakes as a player.
(Isn t It Time to Forgive Pete Rose and Put Him in Hall of Fame?) Similarly, Hall of Fame
second baseman Joe Morgan thinks it is long past time for his long time teammate Pete Rose to
join him in Cooperstown. I think if you are going to allow guys with PEDs on the ballot, then
we have to allow him on the Ballot, Morgan told USA Today. Let s face it, he s been punished
for 24 years. I think they have to take a second look at Pete now that this (Biogenesis) has come
out . (Joe Morgan: Time for Hall of Fame to Induct Pete Rose) You could ask What will
reinstating Pete Rose do for baseball? really any answer would be valid. The right question to
ask is What will not reinstating Pete Rose due for baseball? (Rethinking Rose s Reinstatement)
He wouldn t be immediately inducted into Cooperstown if reinstated. Major League Baseball s
Committee will have to vote Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame if the ban were removed. The Hall of
Fame is controlled by Major League Baseball, nevertheless there is no Hall of Fame without the
players. If the players were to show a united front for Rose, it could mean a great deal to the
Commissioner and other high ranking baseball officials (Should Pete Rose Be in the Hall of
Fame? Let the Voters Decide). For his enshrinement into Cooperstown Pete would need 75% of the
votes of the 65 member committee. If Rose were to be reinstated, he would not appear on the
BBWAA ballot, however, he would immediately appear on the ballot of the Expansion Era
Committee. Nevertheless, the Cincinnati Reds announced that the Hit King would be inducted into
their Hall of

Marquis de Lafayette Essay
Marquis de Lafayette The Marquis de Lafayette is best remembered for the part he played in the
American War of Independence. He contributed in helping the Americans gain free control over
the colonies by breaking away from British home rule. For sixty years he fought with consistency
and insight for political ideals and social reforms that have dominated the history of the nineteenth
and early twentieth centuries. Hence, Lafayette can be attributed to the spreading of liberty and
freedom throughout America and France. Therefore, he is viewed as a symbol of liberalism in a
once absolutist world. Born on September 6, 1757, Gilbert Montier de Lafayette lived in the
Chateau de Chavaniac. This beautiful palace is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, he wanted to distinguish himself as a soldier. Second, he detested England and the
English. As victors in the Seven Year s War, the English humiliated France and took away the
French territory in Canada. Being a very proud Frenchman, He wanted to see England get a
beating; he wanted her to lose her American colonies and he had come to help the Americans
win, gain their independence, and lower the pride of the insolent English nation (Woodward 4).
Thus, he sailed in his new boat Victoire onto the shore of South Carolina, along with fourteen
other French army members, with plans in becoming a volunteer officer for the American
revolutionary army. The marquis pursued his ambitions and left his home in secrecy even after
his father in law, the Duc de Noailles, forbid him to leave France. Lafayette s strong will and
excitement to be in charge of an army was too much to hold back. He left his young, pregnant
wife with nothing but a letter saying good bye. Unfortunately, it would be years before he would
make his way back to his homeland again. Ten days after their arrival into Charleston, Lafayette
and the others made their way to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was the 27th of July and Congress
was still in session. At first, they were rejected and told to go back to France because there were
already plenty of French officers employed in the army. However, after much consideration,
congress

  • 3. A Narrative Criticism Of The Political Ideological Lens The second criticism I enjoyed was looking at the political ideological lens. Also, having a BS in Political Science with minors in International relations and Pre Law, this criticism fully caught my attention. This lens focuses on the resistance of Jesus in his time to motivate Christians today to stand against institutionalized power that often disenfranchises and demeans the opportunity to obtain the American dream. When viewing the New Testament, we must be honest in evaluating the aspects that do not contribute to public health. The issue of poverty and political culture as it relates to the condition of the oppressed is always front and center. My first paper even though a narrative criticism paper focused on the need for political expediency over the true application of justice. This was demonstrated in Matthew 27: 11 26, where Jesusis brought before Pontius Pilate. The purpose of this unit was to illuminate the affair between politicsand justice. The charge the high priests brought against Jesus before Pontius Pilate displays that political expediency takes precedence over justice. This unit is less about Jesus, partly due to his refusal to respond, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe that it is important to point out text like Matthew 4:3 11 that provides a new perspective that takes an emancipatory and inclusive approach to mental illness issues. I want to create a safe space that affirms that Jesus understands the particularities of all experiences, especially those considered the furthest away. In my home church, I would the bishop say that no matter how much sin one committed they could always come back to Christ and change their life. However, people who struggle with mental illness are not given that grace and opportunity to come to Jesus. They are often sat on the sidelines and ignored as if they are the modern ... • 4. Sterotyping in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Essay Topic 1: Stereotyping. The novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is based on the experiences of one girl, Scout, growing up in Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s. The novel explains some conflicts in Scout s life. Scout, the main character, learns that things are not always morally correct and is confronted with the reality of prejudice and stereotyping. Scout struggles with understanding the prejudice and stereotyping she witnesses. Atticus Finch, Scout s father, with his strongly held convictions, wisdom, and empathy, Atticus functions as the novel s moral backbone. (2). Atticus tries to raise his children to be fair and nonjudgmental. It is through the lessons of Atticus and Scout s experiences with discrimination that the reader sees... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Regardless of the lack of evidence, the jury and town are reluctant to take the word of a black man over two white accusers. Atticus strongly pleads for the jury to look past race and stereotypes and serve true justice, They were confident that you gentlemen would go along with them on the assumption the evil assumption that all Negro s lie, and that all Negros are basically immoral beings. ... I am confident that you gentlemen will review without passion the evidence you have heard, come to a decision, and restore this defendant to his family. In the name of God, do your duty. (1). Throughout this trial Scout not only witnesses prejudice and stereotyping, she becomes the victim of several people throughout the book. When Scout arrives for her first day of school, she meets Miss Caroline, a teacher from the north. Miss Caroline has predetermined thoughts as to how the class should be taught and how the children should learn. When Scout tells the teacher she can read and write, she is punished and told she should not learn outside of school and that she is too young to be able to read and write. Scout was mad with Miss Caroline s refusal to accept any other teaching method but her own. This shows how Scout was stereotyped because she was from rural Alabama and the teacher stereotyped everyone to be dumber than herself. When Scout is verbally abused because her father is defending Tom Robinson, she becomes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This includes the ethical obligations of researchers toward the participants in their research, which are enforced by institutional review boards at American research colleges and universities. In these studies, researchers are required to provide the following: (a) informed consent of the purpose of the research, its expected duration, and any potential risks, discomfort, or adverse associated with it ; (b) protection for harm and discomfort; (c) knowledge of deception in a study and debriefing once the study has concluded. These obligations are required to protect research participants. However, these are not always followed in research. • 9. Forensic Science And The Criminal Cases Forensic science plays a role in most criminal cases. In addition, it has become part of mainstream American culture due to television and programs that are based on solving crimes. The connection between science and law has been full of ups and downs. In the courtroom, lawyers may find themselves examining scientific notions that they do not have a full understanding of. Likewise, judges, who are also unexperienced with scientific concepts, are forced to make the decision of whether evidence is relevant and reliable. There is great concern surrounding the quality of our forensic science system. However, the courts continue to rely on forensic evidence without having a full understanding on the limitations of certain forensic science disciplines. There are rules that govern the admissibility of forensic science in court. In the case, Bloodsworth v. State of Maryland, these rules were not followed and the forensic evidence presented should not have been admissible in court. Every attempt should be made to properly study techniques and have its accuracy verified before being used to describe or analyze evidence in court. The standards for the admission of scientific evidence developed gradually over the years. It started with the case, Frye v. United States, in which the court concluded that evidence was not admissible unless it was generally accepted. Years later the Federal Rule of Evidence 702 was implemented, which stated that the only requirement is that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

President McKinley was not interested in wars of conquest or of territorial aggression. His interest in expansion was to make the United States first in international commerce and as a means to implement its humanitarian and democratic goals (Faragher, J., Buhle, M. J., Armitage, S. The makers of Dove shampoo are probably going to shove shampoo down his throat his reaction to it. Even if the rabbit lives through the experiment, there still going to kill him to see what happened to his organs. If this were a humanbeing experimented on, people would be mesmerized. Scientist are debating whether shoving shampoo down a rabbits throat is effective. Testing on animals is a highly disagreeable process that should not be allowed. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another point why animal testing is wrong is because of the brutal things that happen to the animals. For example, the Draize Test is used on white albino rabbits. They use white albino rabbits because of their sensitive eyes. In this process scientist, rub shampoo, soap, toothpaste or lawn products into their beautiful red eyes. Then they record the damage, they have observed. The test lasts up to 18 days, with the poor animals eyelids held open with a clip. Many of the rabbits end up with broken necks trying to escape from terrifying pain. First, it is unreasonable to keep the product in their eye that long. Not even a child would keep a product in their eye that long. The whole experiment was unnecessary to do. The eye tissue of a rabbit is very different from a human eye tissue. The pain they go through had no benefits. A final reason why animal testing is pointless is that there is no law saying that it is necessary to test any product on animals. Why make an animal suffer when there is no need? There are alternatives for animal testing that would have better results for humans, and it would not be involved in any animal unkindness. Why do companies not realize that they do not have to experiment on innocent animals? No animal should have to suffer for an unreasonable cause. • 15. The Five Steps Of The Federal Budget Process I. Introduction The federal budget process is a lengthy and complex process that involves monitoring, adjusting, and reporting on the current year s budget. The budget process is put in place to ensure there is enough funds for many things such as wage war, provide housing, and maintain streets (Rubin 2014). Some of the actors are Bureau Chiefs, The Executive Budget Office, and Chief Executive Office. It all begins with the Federal Budget Process and the President s proposed budget, while directly involving the execution process. The budget execution process aims to reduce the risk of overspending, but when the budget is nearing completion, and it seems overspending will occur, budget sequestration comes into play. However, if not used correctly, sequestration could do more harm than good to our economy and cost important programs their funding. Misuse could also lead to the waste of time and money, which does not benefit the warfighter or the taxpayers. II. Federal Budget Process There are five steps in the federal budget process and it involves many different actors. The first step of this process involves the President submitting a budget request to Congress. This budget request includes the way the President best sees money being spent, it provides suggestions. Change Progress and Prosperity Change Progress and Prosperity The Harvest took place in a small, secluded, and self reliant agricultural community in England, before the industrial revolution. The novel was based on change, growth, progress and prosperity. The village, as the narrator Walter Thirsk stated was, far from everywhere (Crace, 3) and isolated from the world. The village was also fragmented and missing any development of identity. The commons were the people living in the unnamed village. The commons way of life changed from harvesting and plowing to extracting wool for clothing. Jim Craceexamined the themes of changeand fragmentation by the loss of identity and way of life through the use of symbols, characters, and imagery. In the Harvest, symbolism was evident throughout the novel. Symbols are commonly used to add richness and depth to the story. The author used symbols to develop the main themes of change and fragmentation. During the course of the novel, the most significant symbols included: fire, crops, ghost, unfinished cross, quills, sheep, wool, and the rock. In the novel, fire was the most impactful symbol. The novel started with two fires and ended in one. What starts with fire will end with fire (Crace, 198). • 25. Relationship Between Language And Symbol The definition of a symbol according to Merriam Webster Dictionary is something that stands for something else by reason of relationship or association; and can either be letters, pictures, an action, object or event. Symbols are not restricted to pictures or objects, but can include gestures as well as words. Symbol use is necessarily not just for infants, but adults as well and is crucial to the way humans think. Not only does something such as a map serve as a symbol but words such as wedding ring can also be seen as a symbol. Therefore, it is clear that languageand symbols go hand in hand. The question that arises then is the affect of these two on learning in young children. Many studies have been conducted studying the relationship and affect between language and symbol use in infants. It is understood that linguistic and symbolic abilities overlap , but language is far more complex than learning symbols. (Namy, Waxman, 1998) When infants are first learning words, they connect the words they re being exposed to, to the objects around them. Therefore, early wordacquisition focuses on the symbolic nature of words. (Namy, Waxman, 1998) This study more specifically focuses on how infants distinguish between words and other symbols and how this relationship changes with development. A more recent study proposed that, early word acquisition is a function of a general symbolic ability, suggesting that infants learn words and symbols with the same ability at the ... For example, the Monroe Doctrine was constructed for two main reasons: 1) John Adams, Secretary of State, suggested the principle that the Western hemisphere was not an option for any further colonization by the European powers and 2) the U.S. would defend the freedom of other nations. The Monroe Doctrine proved its power in the 1900 s when President Roosevelt enforced the doctrine during the Venezuela Border Dispute as well as securing the independence of Cuba from the abusive Spanish rule. During his Presidency, The Ronald ReaganDoctrine was a foreign policy in the United States from 1980 to 1991. The doctrine was to help eliminate communist governments such as Latin America, Africa and Asia which were supported by the Soviet Union (Lagon, 1994). The plan was to implement support to private and open guerilla and resistance movements that were supported by the Soviet in communist countries. Containment was the official policy towards communism and in creating the Reagan Doctrine, the focus started from keeping communism from spreading then it shifted to eliminating existing communist governments. These structures include the trachea, the bronchi, and the bronchioles. Bronchoconstriction is the main response that occurs during an asthma attack. • 29. Power Of Power By Thomas Hobbes Hobbes (50 Points) Thomas Hobbes belief was morality arose out of a state of nature that operates outside of your own being. According to the Leviathan, Hobbes beliefs entailed a state of nature in which all human beings remain in a constant state of war, where there exists no peace, no justice or injustice, simply force and fraud(Hobbes, Chapter XIII). Everyone is equal since in the natural state everything is a free for all; we each have equal vulnerability and no one has true ownership of anything, therefore everything is free; we are all equal leading to endless war. All that does exist in a natural state is desire, predominantly one for power. According to Hobbes, power is the most natural and desired out of all natural things since power leads to one s ability to satisfy his ever changing desires. Desires are endless and infinite; they lead to the persistence of war in nature. Power satisfies one s need for war since the more power one has, the more desires of his that he can meet. A common inclination of humanity is for more power since it is the strongest and most infinite desire; we are left always wanting more than what we have. Power enables a person to swap and obtain things that meet new desires as they arise. For a prime example, Hobbes lived during the English Civil War where the King and royalists fought against the Parliament in a struggle for power. King Charles believed he had divine power, from God, to rule England and therefore had the power to meet ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. A Brief Note On Air And Water Pollution There was a unique policy window for air and water pollution because of the fast growing involvement with the Environmental movement. On April 22nd 1970 the nation held it s first Earth Day. Americans were eager to participate to demonstrate their loyalty to the planet. This accompanied by Nixon and other policy entrepreneurs ability to obtain a better solution to the air quality problem, resulted in the Clean Air Act. It was easier to generate the public s support because public health became such a concern. Environmental issues were becoming visible to those who didn t care before. The Cuyahoga River fire in Ohio was one of many problems being discovered by the public. The Santa Barbra oil spill and large amounts of smog in cities like Los Angeles, all allowed people to see the real issues with pollution. Pollution became such a visible issue to the public because it directly affected them, they were more inclined to support environmental policy. Once the public made it clear that air pollution was a major concern, President Richard Nixon began to aggressively support the environmental issues. After the massive participation in the first Earth Day in 1970, Nixon signed an executive order to establish the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA was created to be primarily in control of the Clean Air Act regulations and enforcement. Senator Edmund Muskie was another key political entrepreneur for the CAA. • 31. Washington Irving, American Story Teller Essay Washington Irving, American Story Teller I strongly agree with the statement Washington Irving found in legend and folklore a view of the natural world colored by emotion, by superstition, and by the ancient belief that supernatural beings inhabit the wild places of the earth. He wrote stories that illustrated old truths about human nature and the dramatic possibilities of the American landscape. Although Irving wrote over twenty volumes, including essays, poems, histories, biographies, and more, in class, we have focused on his fiction. Irving dispersed many beliefs and legends of his time, and the past, into his stories. He also made great use of American themes in these literary pursuits. Such details along with existent people and events interlaced in his imaginary tales are some of the reasons I find his work so distinctive and enjoyable. Washington Irvingwas the youngest of eleven children, born into a somewhat wealthy New York City merchant family in 1783. In his twenties, he wrote for newspapers, journals, and magazines. Shortly afterward, he worked in publishing and editing. As the first American belletrist, Erving found great enjoyment in writing. His first notable book, (which he heralded the release of with a fanciful precursor,) was A History of New York (1809). It was published under one of his many clever pseudonyms, (faux historian), Diedrich Knickerbocker. When Irving was thirty six years old, the simultaneous publications of The ... However, this definition does tie into Notley s use of the word very well, because her uses of the word flower are centered around a description of women. The use of the word flowerto describe women does not occur in the obvious sense of meaning beautiful, peaceful, or lovely, but in describing aspects of women that lie beneath the surface and comprise their femininity. This may come across as a sweet notion, but The Descent of Alette is a story that cannot be described as sweet in any sense of the word, mainly because of its setting in a dystopian society run by a tyrant. This point holds true for The Descent of Alette as it acts as a cautionary tale of the dangers for women in patriarchal societies by featuring a very apparent phenomenon. The story being based within a dystopia adds emphasis on how disastrous a world run without the aid of a woman would be. Notley s inclusion of situations that accentuate the gender hierarchy and the social constructs that force women to fulfill society s expectations work to establish the value of femininity. In using the flowers to represent femininity, Notley is able to delicately present the stakes of living without this attribute, making us have to read between the quotation marks and the lines to realize how horrid a life would be like without this sense of womanhood. Epic poetry also depends on the existence of a hero who must overcome adversity and, by doing so, exalt the values cherished by a people or nation (Mercadal). This statement does a good job of describing Alette s role within the story. This would make Delta s ability to establish new contacts, find and purchase property, apply for a food license, hiring qualified local managers, gaining new customers and opening new stores a difficult and costly undertaking. As stated by Costas, Delta has insufficient capital for its planned expansion (BRS p.12) which is required if it was to venture on its own in Spain. (Gilman 469) This quote is a prime example of the lack of freedom and control woman in the 1800 s have. The narrator of our short story The Yellow Wallpaper is an excellent example of a Victorian Womanwho expresses the theme of Female Oppression and inequality. Through use of literary elements such as characterization, symbolism and imagery Gilman perfectly illustrates the social issues these women struggle with. Gilman uses literary elements such as characterization and imagery to help emphasize the detrimental effects of female oppression. In the story the characterization helps to demonstrate the struggles between Jane Doe and John. Her husband, John, often demeans the narrator making her appear self centered. Perhaps that is one reason I do not get well faster. You see he does not believe I am sick. (Gilman 468) This illustrates the toxic and unhealthy relationship between John and his wife. John controls her by forcing her to believe all her issues are in her head, causing her paranoia and delusion. Furthermore, this helps express how much power men hold over women and how little control females have over their lives. Another example of how literary elements demonstrate the overall theme of inequality of women occurs when Gilman describes their house through immense imagery. Jesus is brought in to stand trial before Pilate a Roman governor. Pilate clearly does not want to condemn this man; this was partly because he sees no real crime committed and partly because of a vision his wife had in a dream. Pilate questions Caiaphas and Jesus and finds no merit worthy of death and tries to pass the decision of Jesus fate off to King Herod. However, King Herod gets nowhere with his line of questioning towards Jesus so he sends the decision back to Pilate. Pilate undeniably does not wish to crucify this man and attempts to free him by allowing a choice for a prisoner to be freed.
